What's with the fetish for japanese cars here? Japan puts out some of the most underpowered, numb, non-enthusiast grocery getting appliances I've ever seen and yet /o/ eats that shit up while still pretending to be an automotive enthusiast board.
Reliability is also the first thing that's mentioned about any car here, which should be the last thing anyone here is concerned about since, as an enthusiast, you surely know how to fix most any issue on your own.
What gives? Are you all middle aged women?

In all seriousness though, it's probably because the the main demographic of this board grew up in the 90's where granturismo and FnF ruled. The 90's were a golden time for japanese sportscars while america in the 90's were making the worst shitboxes.

The thing about reliability is that, yes it is pretty damn important. Your car isn't worth dick if it cant do it's primary function.

On the 1/100 chance you're serious: Japan makes good, cheap cars. For basically 30 years America forgot how to make a good, affordable, usable car. So when people went looking for a reliable, small car they went to Japan.

Now America makes nice cars as well, but if you are looking second hand, then Japanese is the way to go.

Plus, Japan has produced some of the finest sports cars of the last 20 years. Rx-7, Supra, Skyline, BRZ, WRX, S2000, Miata, NSX and Lancer Evo.

That's a Chrysler engine from back when they teamed up with Mitsubishi to make turbo K cars isn't it? Pre DSM era.
Though that looks like the 2.5L NA 4 banger in my Dodge Spirit shitbox. Pretty sure mine isn't one of the Mitsu engines, it's also a TBI.
>>
>>14886455
Yes, that's the old 2.2 Turbo II, the turbo intercooled engine pushing out 174hp and fuck if I remember but it's a lot of torque too.

It was all Amercian though, Mitsu supplied the 2.6 and 3 litre V6 engines which had either oil leak issues or head gasket issues.
>>
>>14886477
For a 20 year old non direct injected 100hp NA i4, my shitbox has some semblance of low end power. I'm sure in it's prime it was even better. The turbo II with a full 74 horses more must feel great.
>>
>>14886513
Yeah, the old Chrysler EEK engines were designed for low end power rather than high HP figures for the time like the civics and other Jap engines.
Name of the game back then were em pee gees and torque got that from a slightly heavier body.

Some people at Chrysler were really close to supercharging the engine, but the management wanted more turbochargers in everything because they were the new hot thing back then.

Opels are like the spawn of satan, they're the very epitome of fucking terrible cars that blow up every now and then. Those shitboxes are the bane of all mechanics yet they keep on making those fucking terrible things.

Does the Cadillac Catera ring a bell? It's a rebadged Opel Omega which was like the last RWD Opel over here. It's nowadays nothing more than a childrens skid toy for one winter because they rarely last to the second one before blowing up spectacularly.

If I remember correctly, the Catera was even bigger of a failure as a Cadillac than the Cimarron was.

overall, big Mercs and BMW. Also Porsche Cayenne.

If you are in Iraly, sport cars are often preferred to luxury cars. But for those who want their fancy ride, there is always Maserati (although they have been dreadful for a couple years) but you don't see t hem all that often
If you are in France, there are still a couple folks pretending that the large Renault and Citroën selons are somewhat luxurious, but mostly Mercs and BMWs. And fucking Cayenne that have never left the town.

The Merc/Maybach were pretty good but overall luxury cars are really not what they used to be. A lot of rich folks now prefer sport cars so luxury cars try to appeal to the bling loving crowd (see Rolls Royce and Bentley) while the rest has a very small market (see Maserati, Mer/Maybach). The luxury-SUV meme has pretty much killed proper luxury cars.
But there is a lot of middle ground between the shitbox and that. Unless you are italian.

Weird as I see kids rolling in 325's over here all day every day.
Given most of them are older 36's and 30's with the occasional 46.

Problem over here in EU is that everything with even a bit more CO emissions, a bigger engine or anything fun, is instantly taxed to hell and back, thus the 316 shitboxes are quite popular here.

I personally drive either my 3 litre BMW or Benz, anything bellow 3 litres is a starter motor and anything bellow 2 litres is a power drill

I blame mostly the rise of playstation and FnF movies. Before these 2, most American "boyracers" were still mechanically inclined, V8 driving power sliders that raced over the weekend. The only imports "racing" around were owned by middle age men and their kids took them out at nights. Muscle cars surged in power in the 90s after a bland 80s.

To this day, the IROC-Z is one of the best handling cars available. You wouldn't know because no one gives american cars credit anymore.

Most street light cars were automatics in the 90s, With 4.10s in the rear, nothing could touch you. After FnF, American cars got better but were given less credit because the jap cars were CHEAPER because the modded V8s were too expensive at the time.

I don't hate import cars, I just hate the scene and lack of credit given to American Sports Cars.

The real question is, why did Japan go from making cars like the RX-7 (250hp-275hp) and Supra (220hp-275hp) in the '90s, to cars like the FR-S (200hp) today? In 20 years of advancement, the Nissan 370Z gained 50hp over the 300ZX. In the same 20 years, the Camaro gained 150hp (from 160hp-275hp to 310hp-426hp), and the Porsche 911 also gained 175hp (from 272hp-402hp to 365hp-572hp). It's like the Japanese became complacent and stopped trying.
