Im renting a car in LA and my friend says I should just disconnect the speedo cable to get unlimited miles and not pay extra.
Is this true? can I get caught? Seems too good to me true

Besides the obviously retarded reasoning for doing so, a modern car will likely throw several error codes and go into limp mode when you pull the cluster.
I know that happens on modern Fiestas and given how low they are on the cost spectrum im sure just about all others will do the same.
I don't know about all cars, but on BMWs the mileage is stored in both the cluster and the ECU. if you remove the cluster, you can drive for about 200km before the ECU's variance tolerance is tripped and the odometer tamper indicator is turned on. If you want to be a retard and see if all cars are like this, be my guest. Just be sure to report back.
