How does this shit work? Is it worth getting for your car? Is it like in video games (huge ass fucking speed boost)

Nitrous discussion thread

>How does this shit work?
Since nitrous oxide is an oxidizer, it allows more fuel to be burned per stroke in the same way that forced induction does.

>Is it worth getting for your car?
If you're asking how it works, probably not.
>>
>how does it works
it injects more oxygen into your engine, basically chemical supercharging, the nitrous keeps it cool

>is it worth getting
fucking yeah, especially if you have a properly built engine, you can inject up to 400 or 500 hp, and with a regulator you will have better powerband than any turbo or supercharged engine out there

also

friendly reminder nitrous>turbos>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>poopies>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>superchargers
>>
>>14879167
Eh if you equip it correctly it works. Probabky going to reduce the life of your engine a bit depending on how often you spray. Getting bottles filled is inconvient as well.
>>
It won't give you flames out of your exhaust like in NSF but it does the job. Careful not to blow the engine
>>
>>14879167
>How does this shit work?
Basic chemistry

Is it worth getting for your car?
Probably not

Is it like in video games (huge ass fucking speed boost)
Depends.
It can, but the greatest speed increases come at low speeds. Not at 120mph like in Fast and Furious.
>>
>>14879167
It's more combustible than gasoline

It will give you a huge boost but if you don't have a strong bottom end you'll shoot a piston through your block and you're fucked
>>
>>14880694
Wrong. It's just an oxidizer, the gas itself doesn't burn.
>>
>>14880765
>He doesn't know what combustible means
git gud
>>
>>14879167

From my understanding, NOS has a higher concentration of Oxygen than air itself. If it's pressurized into the engine, it acts as an oxygen provider, replacing air, but with loads more concentration.

Cools the intake charge.

did he just manually activate his supper charger clutch?
>>
>>14881265

Yup. kek

It's an oxidiser. It allows you to make more power from the amount of fuel being burned. A dry setup like that, with no additional fuel being added, will add a small amount of power usually 50 or so HP.

At higher powers, you also inject additional fuel (wet nitrous).
>>
>>14881270
>>14881265
In the wasteland, you need to conserve your fuel.
So he only flicked it on because shit needed to get done.
>>
In a dry nitrous kit like I have you inject it before the air intake sensors in hopes that the Ecu will add fuel. It works great if you have a piggyback that can add fuel at full throttle when you normally have the nitro activated. The nitrous is injected into my airbox and the engine takes it in. It is an oxidizer so it's burning your gasoline way better so its in a way turboing your car. It's also why being on the bottle drains your gas tank. The nitrous going into your engine is extremely cold and if your bottle pressure is adequate then you will have liquid nitrous coming out of the nozzle ("prime pressure" like 900-1000 psi the orange zone on your bottle gauge. Usually a fresh full or attained using a bottle heater which you will quickly find yourself wanting) and this is the point where you are getting the fully advertised shot of the jet you have installed into your nozzle. It works best at getting the car moving like in a quarter mile situation. On a roll it doesn't seem to have a a very impressive effect. But that's probably an effect of perception. Ymmv. There's nothing wrong with putting nitrous in lieu of turbo or supercharging . Just don't install a bottle in your car and think that's all you'll have to do to it. It doesn't go that way for the super or turbo guys and neither is it that way for us. At the minimum you may have to build a tranny or get and extra tranny cooler and you may have to upgrade your engine cooling too. I recommend filling up with 93 octane and using an octane booster with every fill up and additionally getting some spark plugs that are one heat range colder than oem recommended for your car

Is this a thing? Or these days is it like an AC compressor clutch.. All electric and automatic?

What is the legal standing of Nitrous in Canada and USA?

Anything's a thing, Man. You just have to build it. The actual prop car's supercharger is nonfunctional though
>>
>>14881537
Yes!
its been a thing for fucking years
>>
>>14881537
Just a movie prop. Movie is Mad Max.
It's literally impossible to turn a supercharger on and off.

Some retards think otherwise, though.

HAHA OH WOW, not only you are a dumb fucking nigger that thinks you can LS swap a miata for free, but you are also completly clueless about superchargers

the mr2 had one stock, and that was in the 80's

top kek
>>
>>14882245
most factory superchargers have a clutch and bypass valve
>>
Nitrous is just like steroids

they give you tons of power but in the end you will end up blowing up
>>
>>14882341
A properly installed nitrous system is no harsher on your engine than a turbo or supercharger. That being said don't use it below 2800 rpm or in OD or you might fry your piston rings

You dumb fucking tripfag.

Superchargers can have clutches like a AC compressor
>>
>>14883454
Supercharger newfag here, although I have one on my car (aftermarket)

Curious what this would be for. If you would want to disengage the supercharger clutch, you'd be running rich, wouldn't you? Or is this all mapped into the ECU for the AFR, and toggles with the clutch?
>>
>>14883502
The ECU reads, depending on the type, the incoming pressure and temperature of the air, or the incoming mass of air. Either way, the ECU will meter the correct amount of fuel regardless of whether the supercharger is on or off. The amount of airflow is less, so the ECU will inject less fuel.

if your a fucking retard who sprays too much than ya

50 hp is like 25 CAI kits.

Nitrous Oxide is made up of 2 parts

Nitrogen
Oxygen
Whats in our air? Nitrogen, Oxygen, and some other random stuff. Its basically just purified air in a tank. The Nitrogen is there for a few reasons, it keeps the air stable during temperature changes, it cools the intake charge so you don't need to run higher octane fuel (if you spray a lot then you will), and it makes sure the oxygen/fuel mixture is correct. (If humans breath in pure oxygen, it fucks them up but over time the body will adjust. Same thing with the car).

There are 2 types of kits. The Dry kit which is when you spray just Nitrous. Then the Wet kind which is Nitrous AND Fuel. Typically the wet kit is best for anything under a 350 shot (+350hp).

The way its setup, it goes bottle > Regulator > hose >Relay > intake.
For the wet kit you also have a hose comming off of your fuel line, towards a relay, and into your intake. At the end of each hose is whats called a "jet" the size of the jet determines how much fuel/nitrous is to be added. The instruction sheet will have a chart and will come with multiple jets that you mix and match to get different shot amounts.

Couple ways you can activate the nitrous. Either a button manually, or some sort of automatic controller (ex. Full throttle switch).

When the nitrous enters your intake the gas expands. This expansion helps cool the intake charge so you don't need an intercooler like you do with other types of forced induction (turbos/superchargers).

When you take a bunch of air and compress it into a compact ball, your not just compressing the air but the thermal energy. So now you have a super hot ball of compressed air. Over time the extra energy will dissipate until that super hot ball is the same temp as the air around it (Has the same amount of thermal energy). However when you uncompress that ball of air there isn't enough thermal energy to go around so it has to absorb it from its surrounding, thus lowering the overall temperature.

>have to pay to refill the tank

Wow that's like having contact lenses than doing lasek or getting glasses
>>
>>14883792
con't

Your AC system in your car works the same way. Compresses the air, sends it to the AC Condenser (Which then removes the heat into the air passing through it) then sends it to you. Same thing with your fridge.

The way they measure how much HP nitrous is going to add is based on the shot. 25 shot = 25hp.= 150 shot = 150hp.

However if your car already has forced induction (like a turbo or supercharger) its almost double 150 shot = +300hp. The reason being is the inlet air temp is incredibly hot from the forced induction. The Nitrous Oxide then cools it making the air more dense.
>>
>>14883814
If you want to be really cheap, methanol is a alternative
>>
>>14879208
A kit is only $700. A proper supercharge kit is like $6k+

A bottle refill is going to be a hell of a lot less than $700. If your just a weekend drag racer then the nitrous might be worth it.
>>
>>14881270
>>14881265
>>14881237
You know procharger made a supercharger called the i-1 or some shit that has a built in CVT transmission? With a computer controller you can reduce boost to as low as 1 psi, or turn it on and get a flat torque curve despite the fact you are using a centri-blower setup.
>>
>>14882124
Ok to have it installed, but you can't use it on the street. Best to just leave the hose disconnected and the bottle in the holder.
>>
>>14883811
>having to mantain the supercharger belt, lubricate the thing and the intercooler in case you have one >having to fill your engine a lot sooner because of the shitty mileage

yeah that sounds better
>>
>>14883893
Do cops use nitrous anymore?
>>
>>14882277
>the mr2 had one stock, and that was in the 80's
Sounds cool as fuck
>>
>>14879167
This older dude I know was talking about injecting a nitro/alcohol mix instead of nitrous+gasoline.
It sounds simpler as it is a liquid and a single component.
Anyone have experience on this?

I have a foxbody that I was thinking of putting a 100 shot in. Would my set up be able to handle it reliably?
>carb swap
>afr 165 aluminum heads
>forged pistons/rods with 10:8:1 compression
>steel crank
>fairly large cam
>going to have a built c4(was a t5 but pic related)

I was mainly concerned with the higher compression being too rough on the internals with a 100 shot.
