They had a proper spread of different types of cars. The 7 series and even 5 series are luxurious, while the 3 was meant to be a jack of all trades with emphasis on good driving feel. Middle class people buying a 3 series and expecting it to be just like a 7 aren't BMW's responsibility. They've avoided making an M7 because it would muddle the brand.
