Alright carfags.

My truck took a shit so I'm thinking of buying this 09 Crown Vic Interceptor. I have always wanted one. Purchased in 2013 from a nearby county's Sheriff Dept.
166k miles
Oil change every 3000
Fleet maintained while in service
No problems.
$2500

Is this a good choice?
>>
I'd buy it
>>
>>14874543

yes. very much.
>>
>>14874567
Thank you, also bump.
>>
Yeah, that sounds like a good deal. But I bet you'll be pissed when you have to change the trany in 30k miles. But again if it last 4 years with no problems you're doing good...

What are the odds I'll have to do that and how much would that cost?
(I'm by no means a car guy. Wish I was.)
>>
>>14874633
>Wish I was
You Will Be.
>>
Just a good chance the car was beat a bit. So problems to come. But the light thing is badass. If you ask me I'd find a car some old lady is selling on Craigslist
>>
I thought the last vic that rolled off the line was 2011 and the rest were middle east exports? That's a good car. But i would go with a 2004 or 2006 civilian.
If you like wire throttles 04. If you like rpm guages 06.
>>
>>14874704
It's an 09
>>
>>14874736

Yeah sorry i read you wrong. Im partial to the civilian models. I just don't like the light. And a full size sedan with a medium to low quality interior is refreshing with a v8 and rwd.

Rather than a fleet interior

That's bullshit those fucking cops pushed that car less than the average 20 year old would and serviced it way way more.

The real motherfucker on these cars is idle hours. Cops sit around with them running, not moving and not adding miles. I feel like sheriffs probably do that the lest between them, city police and highway patrol though.

>That's bullshit those fucking cops pushed that car less than the average 20 year old would and serviced it way way more.
bahaha pls. those crazy fucks hop curbs, go triple digits down gravel roads, and go wot everywhere. no car is as abused as a cop car, they treat them like trucks.
just head over to police one and ask if they would ever buy their personal cruiser for even 2k you dipshit
>>
>>14874543
Got my 07 with 120k for 1700 and my gfs dad got his 06 with 140k for 1500.

There are better deals out there.

Also, look for a detective/supervisor unit. Mine has CD, power seats, no holes from a cage and cop equip, carpet and cruise control. You get all the performance/durability goodies of a p71 and the creature comforts and amenities of a CVLX.
>>
they're good cars because they're cheap but please don't be that one autistic dude with a P71. Do what you can to make it more incognito
>>
>>14874924
Its a white 4 door sedan, thats about as incognito as it gets, departments are phasing out panthers anyway.
>>
>>14874951
Yeah they're all Chargers here now.
>>
>>14874814
This.
Did a ride along in HS with a cop. Told me about how the night shift will do crazy maneuvers, hoon, and race on back roads. He said it's not unusual for a patrol car to blow the transmission on a slow night.
>>
>>14874951
True.

What I recommend from my Panther days:
JMod (if not 5-6 speed swap)
3.73s
Limited slip if not installed
ADTR suspension mawdz
engine swap

the 4.6 is a great engine for reliability but it is garbage for performance in its 2v form because it's just so expensive
>>
>>14874981
Couldn't you just swap in the other cylinder head from the 3 valve SOHC but leave the rest of the block in?

According to a cop I know, a patrol car's transmission is typically fucked because of car chases and because the thin department budget needs to squeeze as much life out of their vehicles as possible. He also says that the brakes/tires are usually pretty worn down because of said chases. He told me not to buy one, but I think I still might in the future.

That Crown Vic is relatively new tho, so I'd go for it OP.
>>
>>14875377
That seems like cheap fixes though. I mean, yeah, on any other car with any other engine I'd say no go, but this engine can take literally any fucking mainline Ford transmission and the AOD is penny a dozen anyway, so if it blows you can swap in a Mustang manual and even increase your hooning factor.
>>
>>14874543

These go for $1000 MAX from the auctions.... Go there and buy one straight from the auctioneer instead of making some tweaker on craigslist a shit load of profit.

It's a good buy.

238K miles reporting in. 1999, digital display. Just did all my major services for the third time. Spark plugs, diff fluid, trans fluid. Running like a fucking champ.

Also just did the transmission J mod for fast shifting because why the fuck not, and did suspension bushing because they were creaking. Didn't really need any of that though.
>>
>>14876253
Was the J mod thing hard to do by yourself? I looked at it in a very good YT video and the sheer number of parts seems daunting.
>>
>>14875530
In my area they get up into the high teens low $2,000's at the auctions due to shills.
>>
>>14874543
My bro has one at 268k ish miles. It has a new tranny and alternator but didn't need either they just replaced it because they felt it was time. It's a solid runner. He picked it up for $1500
>>
>>14875530
Only the absolute shittiest of the shit go for 1k here
>>
prepare to get judged and insulted constantly because people think you're a wannabe cop

good luck senpai

Just stick this kind of slogan onto the car and everyone will love you

I have a 2011 CVPI and it's fantastic. Robust and very confident on bumpy roads. The suspension is very solid and heavy duty. The shifts are smooth and firm, the engine runs like a sewing machine. The inside of the engine is very clean by looking in from the oil cap. There isnt a single thing wrong with my car. I bought it with 136 000 kilometers, and 6300 Idle hours.

I had my friend who works at ford look up the service history on it, and it had the transmission replaced once under warranty, and the rear differential with new units. Pretty great because now I have a transmission with not even 60 000 km on it, and a rear diff with only 80 000 km on it.

Id recommend it OP. I love my CVPI, and its a good DD if you dont mind paying a bit extra in gas. Just maintain it and it will last you a very long time.

>swap in the other cylinder head from the 3 valve SOHC
Won't fit. The term "modular" refers to the machine tools and not the product namesake. Fuck you Ford.
>>
>>14876889
Are you sure?
>>
>>14876287
I'm a professional tech, so it was pretty easy for me. I don't get into transmissions much, because luxury jap dealership. I followed the video on YouTube because I'm human and don't know everything.

Honestly, if you follow the video step by step, you really can't fuck it up. Keep everything extremely organized. Use Tupperware containers and label everything, like he said.

Just grabbed this today for $500. 165k miles, runs great, air ride works. A/C no worky, and it's got an odd issue where the radio goes haywire when you turn the headlights on. (I think it's due to the headunit being furked, nothing electrical. I hope..)

>>14878387

You fucking know it, going to do it tomorrow if it doesnt rain it's ass off
>>
>>14878369
That'll be a ground issue with the radio. It's finding ground through the headlight circuit by way of the backlighting circuit but when you turn the headlights on that path is no longer available. Could be as simple as a poor connection right there at the radio.
>>
>>14878434

i'm putting an aftermarket one in it tomorrow, going to make the point of not hooking up the dimmer portion of the wiring harness because that's what I figure the issue is.
