When you turn 16 in Australia you can get your L plates. You can only drive with a fully licensed driver in the passenger seat.
When you turn 18 you can sit a test for your red P plates (probation). On your reds you can drive by yourself, with a fee restrictions. (Can't tow, power limits, passenger limits).
After a year you automatically get your green Ps, same as the red but your only restriction is on power.
