>Obtaining a CDL: How does one do?
Where: Community College, Vocation Specific School (i.e. Trucker School)
How: Savings motherfucker, or financing - some schools finance, there's financial aid if you can go to a comm. college, banks hand out loans for CDL training all the time because lots of companies will pay it for you once you're hired.
>How can I into avoidings shit companies?
Here are some decent/good companies:
http://pastebin.com/Sv0cyWyH
If you don't see the company you're looking at included on this list, it's probably a coin toss between good or bad.
>I could totally go to school but I'd rather be a trucker.
Worked for me, but listen to the greentext below
>You're literally retarded. Go to school. Anyone can get a CDL in less than a month of training. You can't do that with schooling. AFTER you get yourself massively in debt, if you don't like the field/career you're in, THEN get a CDL and grovel in misery for the next 4 years because you went for the muh college meme instead of trucking in the first place
>Hurr trucks will be automated in <10yrs/Hurr how many hookers do you kill/Hurr enjoy your CPM cucks/Hurr do you all do meth/Hurr why are you all cucks
See: trains, airplanes; a lot; we do; no. Except maybe Ef, how the fuck does he drive that much?

Non truckerfag here. Is the model in the OP some kind of throwback model? I've been wondering that.

No, its just some ugly abomination that should have never left the pages of a "designer"

Sadly it's a shameful cash grab. Literally just the hood/front is swapped onto a regular shitty International Prostar, from what I've been told, and then they mark it up. Sad, really.

It was straight leaking fuel at a decent rate out of the tank on the driver's side and one of the straps on the passenger side was totally done. That little puddle in the pic is from like 30sec after I parked. 20min and there would be a nice puddle.

At least diesel isn't that flammable.

>So, euro cabovers and Big American Trucks on the same roads?
>That's interesting. I want to see how the two truck types stack up together on the same loads.

Same shit in Straya, put a 600HP euro and Merican truck side by side with the same 44TONNES m8 and the Merican will walk the euro.

Euro HP rating has always been shit. My little Cummins I6 410HP pulls much better than the Merc V6 460HP.

Unless you're running tanker, or some other specialty, hazmat is a waste of time for a driver. Carriers like it because it theoretically opens up more loads for them but for a dry van/reefer driver it's hassle without real reward.

Cheap fleet trucks, thats all they've ever been good for, and thats what they'll always be. At least in the heavy trucks. Medium duty is owned by Freightliner, and they've all but made Intertrashional irrelevant,

Idk man, I definitely see way more Intertrashional medium duty trucks. Almost every straight truck I see is a Durastar. Ambulances, armored trucks, 26' box trucks are almost always Int'l. Freightshaker would be 2nd, but not even that close. And then dump trucks are still almost always Macks.

>>
>>14864854
Werner never seemed half bad to me.

What do y'all niggas think of Trans Am? They run quite a few trucks in and out of South Florida. When they recruited from my school in IL, sounded like a decent medium size company without a ton of bullshit besides shilling their lease program.
>>
>>14864854
Your best bet is to go through a reputable school and sign on with a good company out of the gate, instead of a "starter" company.
You can call around recruiters and ask what they want.
I drive a Crete truck and my understanding is they'll take you on with no experience if your school is on their list of good ones, if you're ex military they have a program to get you set up and trained.
I don't know how that works, though.
>>
>>14864862
A lease program is a HUGE red flag for any company, especially if they're pushing it.
ACT out of Kansas City has a lease program, but they tell you straight up that most people don't finish the lease, and if you don't have a strong work ethic and good business sense then won't make any more money than their company drivers.
>>
>>14864871
My school held a small class and from what I gather is held in pretty high regard locally. Lots of chemicals/tanks/hazmats around here though and I'm kind of afraid of driving those. I'll have a look around though before I sign up with a big company.

It's really no different to other marques utilising a modular cab whilst fitting it to different chassis with different front clips (Paccar branded trucks are notorious for this, which it makes sense) and market to different segments.
Personally, I like the Lonestar. It's different to the pretentious and generic "classic" style in where a square hood is fitted to what would otherwise be an aero model.

>>14864102
Most places want it because some pretty typical freight is hazmat, like bleach for example. It's nice for the flexibility of it.
>>14864283
You literally could not be more wrong. Skyline is all dry vans and reefers modded for heat, and we have to have hazmat and tanker for some of our loads.
>>14864437
I eat a lot of fast food sadly. Need to do like Truckerfag and get camping cooking gear and cook for myself.
It's your own money, but you get a nontaxable reimbursement of I think $58 for every 24hr period you're away from home.
It's shit. Worse than a commuter car. The Freightliner I started in had no bass, and this Peterbilt has no bass or treble, and a super overblown midrange. It's great for classic rock and shit at everything else. Adjusting the bass and treble only makes it worse at everything.
You mean a semi kept doing that to you? He's an ass.

Don't get it. You usually get an extra 1cpm on dirty loads and it's a fuckton of paperwork and regulations. Thrill make you sit somewhere for days waiting for a load if there isn't another hazmat driver inbound.

>>14864247
I've loaded in train depots with the exact same freight going on the train next to me. If it's on a truck it's for a damn good reason.

>>14864437
>What do you guys do for food or is it constant fast food (fiance's dad is a trucker and all he eats is mcdonalds and hotdogs on the road)
I go to Meijer or Walmart and fill up my $650 3.5cu ft fridge with shit I'll forget I bought. Yogurt, cheese, vegetables, steak, ribs, roasts, chicken thighs. Anything you can throw in a slow cooker is nice, but when you do short haul like me and the truck is only on 2-4 hours at a time you're limited to the griddle, which is messy and awkward.

>Is there a food budget or is it your own money
You're a grown ass man doing grown ass things. It's your own money, but uncle sam makes it tax free.

>whats the sound system like in big rigs hopefully its pritty good
Usually a shitty car unit with no amplifier, some 6"s in the doors and some 8"s on the roof. Usually can't hear shit under 90% volume in older trucks (re:2010 and older).

The way it was explained to me was this:

Canada has a loophole involving intermediate term work visas where, if you start and maintain a "small business", you can live and work in Canada for something like 20 years before you have to either get citizenship, or get out.

The loophole is that lease purchase programs and their ilk qualify as small business ownership, so all Ivan needs to do is scrape 5,000 (or less) monopoly dollars together for a down payment and he can earn big bucks in Canada for 20 years before retiring like a king back in squatstanistan.

I use pic related for most of my food. Sandwich ingredients, produce, milk, juice and eggs usually in stock in the fridge. Some misc frozen foods up top, and a dry pantry not pictured with stuff like soup and oatmeal. I still hit the fast food if I'm feeling lazy or something sounds good, but that set up lets me eat healthy pretty much all the time. Plus it's nice to be able to eat when I have time, like at a shipper getting loaded, instead of having to always take time out of the day to stop at a restaurant.

International's school buses suck too. The only reason school districts/bus companies buy them is because they are several grand cheaper than Thomas or Bluebird. They don't realize that downtime and repair costs far outweigh the initial savings

Oilfield workers are fucking retarded. They blow all their cash on lifted trucks and other gay shit without saving or doing any future planning whatsoever.

Then when drilling stops they're stuck with massive payments on all their toys and little to no applicable job skills.

Topkek. But yeah, I was at my second stop when I noticed the leak and almost asked them to bring me a new truck. I kicked the other fuel tank a few times to make sure the one strap would hold.

And Pepsi is baiscally the same with the Internationals. They save a few grand on the intital purchase, but the truck is down 20% of the time and they end up having to rent Penskes and shit sometimes and that just totally negates any savings over buying a KW with a Cummins or at least some Freightshakers. I have had this discussion with our fleet mechanics so many times.

Is there a common reason trailers catch on fire? It usually looks like it starts around the tandems.
>>
>>14881417
Shitty drivers ride the service brakes to much. Sometimes the brakes just melt. Sometimes they ignite and take the tires or trailer down with them
>>
>>14881417
Brake's on just enough to drag but not offer significant resistance and after a while it catches fire. Could be due to any number of failures but the most common is a leaking can. This is why it's important to know if you're trailing smoke but since too many don't have radios anymore you get roadside barbeques instead.

>>
>>14881735
Takes 10 minutes to grease the slacks, and you can do a good visual inspection woke you're down there. Check the spring hangers so you don't drop your houses and lock up your brakes. Touch the hubs in you're post trip. Keep an eye on any hub that's warmer than the rest, and if one nearly burns you it's fucking shot.

>>14881769
You want this thread stickied again?

>>14882039
Your wheels will be black if they're leaking. New seals cost $6, and a new hub cover and seal is $9. They go bad every year or two.
>>
>>14882039
God damn it Whiney.

Engine off, parking and trailer brakes released, apply foot brake as hard as you can. If you're leaking more than 4 psi in 1 minute, it's a problem.
Could be an air line, could be a brake can that will roast your brakes.
If your truck has a trailer brake lever, use it for a tug test. Make sure it applies and releases in reasonable time.
Make sure all your wheels are spinning while you move.
Make sure your truck isn't slowing more than it should in neutral on flat ground.
You can do all that before you leave the truck stop.
And finally, watch your god damn mirrors.
>>
>>14882161

>her phone rings starts talking over phone, literally watch her do 3 people's jobs simultaneously
She must be phone powered.
Turns out my pickup is in 3 of the 4 buildings they own in the industrial zone. Have to slide tandems and Un hook for each.
I really hate industrial parks like this. It's almost too small for the tiny straight trucks
>>
>>14882686
>literally watch her do 3 people's jobs simultaneously

That's a logistics thing. Everything OTHER than the actual moving of goods has been pared down to the bare minimum of manpower, so anyone working at it has to do everything at once.
I'm fortunate in that there's a lot of manpower around doing other things, so if something REALLY needs to get done AND my managers are in a good mood (or are being pressed enough by THEIR managers), I can have 30-50 pretty much untrained people thrown at it.

If you can't do three people's jobs at once, you're generally stuck with menial labour.
Or driving the truck, but that requires a certain degree of autism to not go crazy.

Must not have it as I'm slowly starting to loose my shit. Granted it's the shipping receiving bs not the actual driving. That part is rather relaxing. I think it's cause I know what I'm supposed to be doing and am doing it.

I've never understood the logic behind having one person do the job of three granted you are getting 3x the results for 1/3rd the cost but you will literally destroy a person in the process forcing you to keep refilling that position

>lady hostler keeps smiling and waving when she drives by
I should point out its the smile and wave you give to the special needs kid when he sees you.
>I grin like an idiot and wave back
>>
>>14883044
>forcing you to keep refilling that position

That's a feature, not a bug. It means people don't stay long enough to accrue benefits or a company pension.

> Special needs smile and wave
It's because you're a truck driver. You ask inconvenient questions like 'where am I supposed to park' and interrupt their well-oiled system and routine.
And because if you aren't given attention you might do the unthinkable and GET OUT OF THE CAB. And WALK AROUND and possibly GET IN THE WAY. That takes time, and time is money.

I say this as someone who does 2-3 people's jobs, as measured by how many people it takes to DO my job when I'm on holiday/off sick/management's pissed at me.

Although it's been down to 2 for a while because I dropped a dolly on my head and gave myself brain damage before xmas.
Which was on top of a few nasty bike accidents as a teenager, and a more recent smacking of my head on a set of produce scales because some cunt of a customer edged me over under them while I was doing my old job, and I stood up and CLANG.

But now I know to check doorway clearances while not underneath something, and to make sure nothing's where my head's about to be.

I'm well aware of all the procedures you posted. I'm just curious if there are other components that will cause your tandems to ignite because I've seen at least 5 trailers burnt to the ground, seems way more common than it should be.

MT pays the same as loaded.

We go by practical miles from city center to city center, which is a dense and complex formula nobody's ever been able to figure out, but it's somewhere between hub miles and HMG in terms of fairness
>>
>>14875105
So you just lose a day's pay then? Sounds fun!
>>
>>14883698
Neat, thanks. Not paying real miles kinda sucks but I think at the pay they offered I'd still be getting paid more overall.

Stopped at a Flying J super early so I could see my mom, got a free laptop from her boyfriend. Neat.

What's the best job someone can get driving a straight truck?

If it makes a difference im in canada
>>
>>14884249
Specialized. Like your vac truck picture, on-site fuel delivery, equipment rental, construction delivery with Moffatt or Hiab crane/stinger/zoom boom. Or if you're on the west coast and can swing it, movie production truck driving. Those fuckers get paid a lot.
>>
>>14881089
well don't hit shit, you should be fine or build bullbars with a space behind it.
>>
>>14884281
My sister is a boom mic operator and knows the guys who owns a few of those camera chase cars. They make some crazy bank on them. Like 10 grand for a 1 day rental. I've even spoken to a few car haulers who do nothing but ferry background cars from place to place. It's a pretty sweet gig. If you live near Vancouver you could probably get your foot in as a standby, with all the filming done there.

seconding crane operator. A very useful skill that goes with fairly decent pay and demand. Make sure you're honestly certified though.

>>14883530
Not in a row, but within the year. I saw one with the back half melted today though, which made me ask why the trailers catch fire.

Also, some fucks in my neighborhood have been stealing my spares. I even put a hefty lock on it last time and they managed to cut it. I just left my spare in the cab this time, and yes, it's inconvenient as fuck but I don't even care.

Question for truckers was soft top trucks a thing?
Pic related
>>
The other night I had a dream that I was looking at a map covered with little blips that showed loads and how long I had left to get to them, as if it was a video game. No matter how hard I tried, I could never line them up to get one after another or get close to home. I've been having weird, cryptic dreams recently.

Question for Truckerfag and any other O/O's here: Do you use load boards yourself, or do you pay a broker?
>>
>>14885430
Yeah, it wasn't too bad getting it in though. I just wish I could secure it to my truck to make it too difficult to steal.
>>
>>14886618
Completely smear it with your shit, they'll never touch your stuff again.

Why are they stealing your spare tire, anyway? Selling the rims as scrap?
>>
>>14886650
I don't know, it's also just the tire, there's no rim to it. I suspect it's the really small time independent truckers trying to save money by stealing my spare instead of buying one.

I hate it because I get paranoid about parking it near my house now. I should probably just park it in my driveway at this point.
>>
>>14884170

>>14887952
I do my pre-trips every day. I don't understand how the tire could even fly off, it's secured to a tire rack with a length of chain and a lock. Even if it did happen, I wouldn't be lying about it on a Mongolian Cave Painting site.

I know I usually fuck up shit but now you're just grasping at straws.

When I spoke with Roehl yesterday they told me I'd get either a 2013+ Freightliner or International once I'm on my own, my choice, kinda. Definitely going for a Freightliner, above all else I don't want an international.
>>
>>14888182

I've always heard that new freightshakers are at least comfortable to drive and not horrendously unreliable

I really don't know why anyone buys an International anymore. If I were running my own gig I'd probably swing for a Columbia glider with a rebuilt 60 series Detroit.

>Linux
I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're referring to as Linux,
is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux.
Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component
of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell
utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.

Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day,
without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU
which is widely used today is often called "Linux", and many of its users are
not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.

There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a
part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system
that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run.
The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself;
it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is
normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system
is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called "Linux"
distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.

You're going from a Pete to a freightliner - the interior might seem a bit sparce without a lot of Bells and whistles but they're like the Chevy's of truck land. Reliable and power when you need it but don't go expecting a lot of anything else.

That, or the delivery driver getting in their way.
Should have ordered a second one for them to share. As a warehouse person, I find that bribery covers a lot of sins.
Doughnuts, energy drinks, McDonalds breakfasts, etc.
Even basic politeness goes a long way, considering that any driver that crosses us has to come grovelling with an apology to save his back from all the work we do.

I got to ride in a '13 or '14 Cascadia a few weeks ago when the Pete broke down. Lots more engine noise in the cab, but I like the sound of the Detroit. It was definitely an improvement over the Columbia as far as comforts go.

>>14890268
I always explicitly state I'm in a truck, what color it is, and where it's parked and they take my cell number. Nobody ever fucking tells the driver any of this. Half the time they just go to the fuel counter then call me wondering why I'm not inside. If they actually manage a smooth delivery I'll set them up with a 25% or higher tip.

I already got approved by Schneider and Werner. Werner pays a bit more but I'd be unloading trucks for dollar tree.
