First is only for starting or parking lots/places with speed bumps and shit. Second is only for low-speed residential streets.

Third can be used on any slightly larger street and I can remain in third all the way up to highway speeds.

For my car, 4rd is the best. I have a moderately built Focus ST so flooring it in either 2nd or 3rd usually ends up getting no traction.

I would say third gear because if I had to onl;y have one, that'd be it. Second is fun because of the pull it has, but third provides more range and is a good middle ground, plus if you have decent low end torque third can pull decently at lower speeds.

Of course it all depends how every car is setup but third for me.

Fourth is too high, it's more of an overdrive gear for city streets

Fifth is another fourth

If you're at high speeds there's no way you're getting into reverse; your synchros will usually block you or at worst you'll just crunch it. I'd rather have this happen than accidentally shift into 1st or reverse (instead of the other gear) and not notice until I already smashed into something.

Reverse is waaaay over to the left relative to the other gears, it takes a shit ton of force to get it over there, and even if you do manage to be completely fucking retarded and accidentally get it over there, you're not going to be able to engage the gear. It will not let you. Just because your 1.6L japanese econobox lets you doesn't mean an actual well designed car is going to.

It's retarded to be honest. Having no lockout and reverse in such a place is just straight fucking dumb, I'm a BMW fanboy but still I couldn't believe they don't have a lockout on their 6 speed gearboxes. Fair enough you really have to slam the stick far to the side, but someone not used to it could quite easily mistake it for 1st, where-as if you had to pull a collar up or push the stick itself down, it wouldn't happen.

I fucking own a 10 plate BMW with gearbox described. Mines only got 30k miles on so its not worn out, you really don't need that much pressure at all, I can easily see myself doing it by accident if I had no sleep at all and was in a hurry.

Actually I've put it in reverse at a stop light in a manual trans BMW, it was the only time in my life I mixed it up.
I was stuck in traffic at a traffic light, really stressed out as it was my first time driving a right hand drive car and my first time driving on the left side of the road (in the UK) and I didn't even feel that I had put it in the wrong gear because gear shifts with the left hand felt really weird and because of the stress.
I realized my mistake at the moment I started lifting the clutch though, and I put into first immediately.
Also it should be noted that I had less than 6 months of driving experience at the time.
So basically you have to be quite retarded to mess up the gears and crash in the car behind you

Most of the time you have to get out of first too quickly to have any fun, and by the time you get to third you'll have your car impounded.
