Gonna start the 35mm dump I have of my family's cars from the 60's. Finally unflipped them all.

>>14854851
it's hard to explain our drivers
most dangerous are the bogans really, in the city they drive commodores/falcons, sometimes utes or bigger 4x4s
in the outback they have landcruisers with huge bars and a million spotties
but sometimes these cunts enter a sort of rage that's hard to comprehend, if they think you've done something against them (cut them off etc) or don't like you for some reason then they'll just go blind with fury, there's vids of people being rammed then having the bogan jump on their bonnet and smash it bare-handed
there was a recent vid of a guy who walked up to a bus and punched the windshield till he broke through, heaps of blood but he didn't care

tl;dr hippies in priuses aren't that bad usually
>>
>>14854883
Oh shit, just noticed that sick '59 Buick in the background.

>>14854887
For that price and those miles I think you will be good to go. Also, the settlement is for my back injury I got at work back in October of 2014. Finally getting money for it now.

>>
Last one. I wish they kept fucking any of them. Sadly, my grandparents were the type of people that would lease a car every couple of years.

>>14854925
Well I'm certainly not gonna buy something bad. My budget for a car is around 7k (10k if I really need it). At this point it's probably gonna be either a big comfy boat or a van. All I know is that the wait is killing me.
>>
>>14854940
you could get an exceptionally nice classic for 7k....
>>
>>14854902
I would expect abos to be the fucking ragey ones, I always thought bogans were just redneck cunts

I know what you mean by that blind fury shit too, in my days of playing CS, third world chimps go on a fucking CRUSADE if you wrong them in any way, even if you didn't even do anything wrong, to the point where they'll fucking single you out of a group of 4 people just to get you even if they're going to die for it.

I notice this shit happens with slavs for the most part.
>>
>>14854944
Oh I know, especially out in California. I'm not worried at all about being able to find something. Just the excitement of getting something is killing me.
>>
>>14854940

Rear windows on G body sedans don't roll down. Otherwise G bodies are kinda slow but comfy as fug. Well actually it'd probably feel like a rocket compared to your Ferd. If it has the overdrive trans it'll go way faster than the indicated 85 mph. Still if you're gonna get a 4 door get a B body.

What's the general consensus on older Jags?
>>
>>14857085
can be unrealiable, more so if you are in a place like texas or somewhere that has weather that's the opposite of england. V12 will kill you in costs, XK i6 is great, lucas electrics are satan, good looks, don't buy a cheap jag, it will be anything but.
>>
>>14857117
So the 420's on craigslist are going to cost more than the $3K they're listed for?
>>
>>14857132
you can buy it for 3k, but you are going to pay out the ass on little shit fixing it constantly. some are tanks and need nothing, but a 3k car that cost 45k new 30 years ago is not a good idea.
>>
So what's the consensus on what makes a classic car here?
pre-80s? pre-70s?
>>
>>14856670
Do you live in a state where you need to smog it? If so, don't get anything newer than 79 or 80 because the computer Quadrajet is shit. Otherwise 78-87 G body El Caminos are great cars, I miss mine.
>>
>>14857766
Based on their iconic status many '80s cars and even some early '90s cars could already be considered classics in an autocultural context, but we mostly talk about pre-'80s here. Every pre-'80s car is definitely a classic.

>>
>>14858368
I've seen them run that high for a really good restoration but it would have to be perfect in every way to command that price. The Star Chief is a really cool cruiser overall, but not as desirable as the Chevrolet equivalent. I can dig the teal paint as well, just a good color for cars from the 50s as it pairs well with white accents and chrome (and I'm not big on chrome).
>>
>>14858605
Oil patches under the engine, fresh (relatively) oil lurking in niches in the engine bay, listen for tapping when the engine is cold (valve lifter knock is a big problem on 140hp heads). You'll hear a whirring but that's the massive fucking fan spinning.
A big oil leak spot is at the oil cooler, right under the alternator/generator.

look at the PCV system, the carbs starve without it working right.
look for patchwork or welded metal under the body.

Always run it with 11-16 psi on the front tires.
If it has 4 carbs, it has 140hp heads, 2 carbs is 110hp.
>>
>>14858368
If it's had a complete resto, then that price would make sense

I started my car for the first time in 10-15 years and rust came flying out of the exhaust. I just saw a red cloud coming towards me before I realized it was rust and breathed it all in.

Am I going to die?

In other news, sounds like there is a massive exhaust leak that I visually confirmed. The whole muffler can rotted out and there is a massive leak. Can I drive like that? The hot exhaust gas is exiting right at the gas tank. Not sure if that is the most kosher thing to do.

I'm not really sure if I want to sell this miserable piece of shit or keep it.
It's a 300D diesel and definitely has seen its haydays come and go twice now.

The paint is whatever and very faded, the interior in a really bad condition and keeping a diesel around here is extremely expensive.

Then again, it is a 300D Benz, the best of the best.

Unless the axles have a backing plate that bolts to the axle tube flange, you need to pull the cover as there is some sort of a retaining clip holding the axles in. I've yet to see an axle that used anything but C Clips (conventional cover style) and retaining plates (Third member style).

You have clips or keepers in your axle. Did your retainer flange have 4 bolts or 8? You will have C Clips and if its an LSD, you have to fish around springs. If its a posi unit, just around spider gears. Either way, pull the diff cover and get some ring pliers. It's gonna be fun.

if im buying headers for this rustang, summit says the power steering bracket is required for installation. the car doesnt even have power steering so should i really have to buy this bracket? id imagine not?
>>
>>14873775
Nah you shouldn't need it, it's probably something you'd need if you did have power steering to move it so it doesn't interfere with the headers.
>>
>>14873775
You will be fine as you do not have the components. Most likely the actual tubing projects forward beyond the head slightly and requires an adapter bracket but because you do not have power steering, its a moot point.
>>
>>14873582
>no way to inspect the car without forking 1k+ for a ticket to US

You could always hire someone to go look at it, I know there are companies specifically for that type of stuff. Or you could always see if someone on /o/ lives near the vehicle.
>>
>>14873775
Long tube or short tube? Short tube headers are bolt on and pretty straight forward for 71, long tubes can be more tricky, but if you don't have power steering, it may just be bolt on as well.
>>
What kind of inspections/emissions testing do people have to go through on here? I've got a first gen mustang and pretty much only had to get registration and insurance to get it on the road, but thats probably because my state doesn't give a fuck about emissions or safety, which is nice.
>>

In California it's the same thing with anything 1975 and older. 97 and older if it's a diesel.
>>
>>14875564
No safety inspection in IL. No emissions testing before 1995 in my county (some counties have no emissions testing at all.) Hey guys, been a while since I posted. I decided to dump whatever money was necessary in the project car once college is out. Didn't realize old bench seats and even the fucking foam inserts are so expensive (like $2k for a set).

Anyone know if the front bench seat is interchangeable with the rear one in a '68 full size Chevy? The front one is serviceable, the rear is kind of fucked. I was considering moving the front one to the back, and buying cheap bucket seats from ebay for the front.
>>
>>14878703
I highly doubt it m8, you might be able to make the bottom part work but the top part is completely different. I used to have a 69 Caprice and I ended up ordering custom fit Mexican blanket style seat covers.
>>
>>14878798
fuck shit man. It's not just the covers, the seat frame itself has basically rusted into chicken wire. I doubt it would survive being blasted and coated, but I guess I have to try. It's currently in the trunk rotting away because the PO was a pretty useless dude

here's what I did with my doors, I think it came out pretty well considering it's made of carboard, rubber cement and gorilla glue (plus the original rusty panel frames)

>>14878832

I've been looking for a running '58 Apache in original condition to start building up to a daily driver for at least a year now. Turns out my uncle's old '58 that I thought was gutted still has the original 235 I6 and he claims it'll run with a new battery and some quick prep work. I have my doubts but it is part of his personal collection and he has never been known to bullshit when talking shop. If he can prove to me that it's a runner I'll be buying it off him, likely for dirt cheap since it'll be staying in the family, and my father, also a mechanic, is going to join me in restoring it. Meeting up after work for burgers to talk it over.

I'll be heading to the shop after work today to take a closer look at it, I'll be back with shots of the interior + floor pans, any significant rust inside or out, the bed floor, the engine bay / any visible leaks, probably a few shots of the underside, and a better idea of what I may or may not be getting myself into.

It's my favorite truck of all time, I've been borderline obsessed with finding one for over a year, turns out the candidate may have been sitting here under my nose the entire time. If I decide to take it on as a project, which I should know by tomorrow, I'm going to get it up and running strong on the original 235 I6 first. I've heard a lot of good things about them and while I do love V8s and have never owned a vehicle without one I also appreciate the charm and extreme simplicity of an old I6. I'd like to know what a real '58 feels like first, I want to hear it like it was heard 58 years ago, I want appreciate it is a historical relic that survived half a century in its original form before I start bolting alien technology to it, if I ever do get to that point with it.
>>
>>14883283
I've been doing a lot of reading around restoration forums regarding original '58 Apaches with 235 I6s and most people don't seem to be having a very hard time finding the parts they need, especially online, the aftermarket for these trucks is incredible. LMC seems to have every single piece of the truck outside of the engine, at reasonable prices too.

Honestly I think my biggest concern right now is whether or not I'll be able to take the original 235 I6 / 3 Spd. Manual on the highway. Rear gears are 3.9:1, would it be possible to cruise safely at 100 km/h (60 mph)?
>>
>>14883424
I'm running 4000 RPM at 91mph in 3rd with 3.55s based on my tire size. There's a cool calculator that will calculate your speed at RPM based on rear end gear and tire height overall. Cool little tool, ill see if I can google it into being.

To follow up. With a 28.4" tire diameter, and if you have the syncromesh manual, you should be doing 65 in 3rd at 3000 RPM. I'd swap in some 3.55s or 3.73s and be a bit lower in the revs. 3.92s pull great but have no top end comparatively.

So upon further inspection the '58 Apache project turned out to be a mess and a misunderstanding, no surprise. Turns out the "Brian that needs to sell his Apache" isn't his brother Brian like I thought it was, the Apache belongs to another Brian that hangs out around the shop. That being said I knew I was face to face with definite Boomer tax, at least $5000 for a '58 that has been sitting outside uncovered and unstarted for ~10 years, not going to happen. 67 El Camino for $3500, looks like it was customized in the 80s with cocaine as the main inspiration.
>door handles shaved
>bumpers painted
>trim removed or painted over
>80 million pig disgusting louvers on hood
>TAILLIGHTS PAINTED OVER
Does this look redeemable at all?

I think it looks pretty good already

That thing is a chariot family

Why the fuck do people paint over trim pieces though? Its one of part of the classic car aesthetic

Bumpers I kinda understand but its still shitty

I'm a firm believer of keeping a vehicle as stock as possible. While I appreciate a well done resto-mod and custom builds, I would prefer something as stock as it came from factory

Someone talk me in or out of buying this and making myself essentially broke. "Needs some metal work" and supposedly turns over. 383 5 speed. Guy wants 5400.

I know, supposedly the frame is good. This dude has 2, this one is on way better shape but it's automatic.
>>
>>14891916
I actually like the paint scheme and a few other things but yeah basically.

Vatos locos forever guey!
>>14891968
All logic went out the window when they painted the FUCKIGN TAILLIGHT LENSES I mean damn I just can't get over that.
>>14892143
Swapping a transmission is hella fuckin easier than body work. Also old Mopars are sorta unibody, they don't have one continuous frame and if something like the trunk pan is rotted out the rear section of frame is fucked. I'm sure Furybro can tell you better than I can.

Pretty sure they've got a unibody but also frame rails at the front supporting the engine.
