I'm new to BMWs, but I feel like everything something breaks or doesn't "feel" right, I got to fix/change it.

I never had this mentality with other cars.
Anyone here also like this? or is it just me?

I've had this annoying whir sometimes when I start my car up, however it goes away when the clutch is in. Been told it may be my throw out bearing. But it shifts perfectly, so there really is nothing for me to worry about.

I suppose it really just depends on the part.

And man, this makes a good phone wallpaper.

>>
>>14850618
other cars you might let little things slip past
but with bmw there is sort of an expectation of a little more than just working
>>
>>14850795
The clutch release bearing is making a noise in my E46 as well, the noise is kind of annoying when standing still but it doesn`t bother me much.
Will be doing a clutch/brake fluid change tomorrow, hopefully it fixes that

Getting a bucket wash, 3 stage buff, rim cleaning, window polish, carpet shampoo, and leather conditioning done on my E39 today. This is about what it looks like now. I'll post results later today, the detailing shop is only charging $120 for everything so I'm a little skeptical.
>>
>>14850618
something about the golden era bmws makes you really attached to them and as such you get a neurotic impulse to make everything perfect. I've got it too

>strange subtle engine vibration at idle, like a really really subtle misfire
>not sure where to start in order to diagnose it since the ECUs aren't throwing any bmw-ghost-codes
>tempted to just replace all the coils and injectors
>>
>>14852871
$120 does seem low
is that multiple washes + multiple claybars + a GOOD polish? Don't let them wax it, critique their results right after polishing since waxing can hide what they missed
>>
Posted about this before but I'll be a little more specific. Looking into buying an E92 (328i or 330i, almost all AWD here so likely that), is this going to end up being a money pit?
>>
>>14853060
>Looking into buying an E92
in a few years*
>>
>>14853060
possibly, depends on a few things
>does the seller have detailed service records? he probably kept it well and it'll be good to you
>did the prepurchase inspection find more than a few problems? if so, be more cautious. If you're asking yourself "should i get a prepurchYES THE ANSWER IS ALWAYS YES

miles aren't that important compared to how well it was kept

if you want more fun, try to stick to rwd if you can, which may even be cheaper in snowy climates. Also stick to manual for maximum fun. A rwd 328i with a stick is great. the e9x awd system is heavy and more stuff to fix and make suspension jobs harder, not to mention you have far fewer aftermarket suspension upgrade options because the suspension geometry is silly for awd

My shit is flawless senpai.
>>
>>14853105
also more considerations
>can you maintain the car entirely yourself?
that'll save you a shitload, and the e9x is more reliable than the e46 BUT repairs are either harder or much harder
>>
>>14853105
Ideally I'd at least want service records and it would be taken to a mechanic for inspection before any purchases as I've done with any car I bought, I'd also prefer RWD but give its limited availability it's not a deal-breaker. Will only buy manual, though.

Just worried about horror stories (I know it's about average reliability but parts be expensive)
>>
>>14853135
e9x has basically no horror stories unless it's been badly neglected, major problems are rather rare aside from the ubiquitious electric water pump/thermostat problem (which is $500 in parts and maybe two afternoons or most of a saturday on jack stands)
>>
>>14853237
>which is $500 in parts and maybe two afternoons or most of a saturday on jack stands
Or I could use that money and time to swap in an LS1 :^). I'll admit after researching it a bit it doesn't seem to have a disproportionately high amount of horror stories compared to any other car I was looking at. Also thanks for the spoonfeeding
>>
>>14853259
i have an autistic need to spoonfeed people on bmws but only sometimes.
just, again, keep in mind most jobs are harder to do and take longer than an e46, as such you might run into the occasional "oh shit i have to rent a car to get to work because i wont have time to fix this in one afternoon" problem, but that's what preventive maintenance is for anyway
>>
>>14853619
I have a secondary car anyway, just the E46 is a little slow and outdated for me, plus almost all of them are in meh to bad condition here. I'm mostly just worried about it costing a shitload to keep running is all, preventative maintenance is fine.

I autistic[al?]ly spoonfeed a lot on other subjects anyway so I get it.
>>
>>14854087
also, protip, the tpms system breaks
all the time
holy shit
it's garbage, and gives you a blinking light all the time while the car is running and goes BONG! on startup and there's no way to code out/disable it.
>>
>>14854105
Could you not just unplug a wire or something
>>
>>14854115
no, because when something is wrong with the system the error is that it's "inactive", so unplugging any sensors makes it inactive too

2014 F20 M135i in Glacier Silver with SportAutomatic.

No recent fixes, just maintenance.

Did a stage 2 tune with ECU remap and Wagner Evo 1 intercooler and Wagner sport catalytic converter. That took it from 320 hp / 450 Nm / 332 ft-lb to 400 hp / 600 Nm / 443 ft-lb.

It's basically an incognito rocket with an awesome sound thanks to the sportcat. And a very practical DD with good mileage (9 l/100 km or 26 mpg US).

I love it!

My car hungers. Did the valve cover gasket and PCV/Oil Separator Unit/Hoses this weekend. Doing all fluids/filters middle of the week.

I kinda feel bad spending all this money then I chuck my car into a corner at a ridiculous speed and remember why its worth it.

Gonna drop the driveshaft/exhaust next weekend or two to do the shifter.

The E39 has a feature where if you shut your hand in the window, it rolls back down. Some kind of circuit that closes in the top rubber when pressure applies to it. But I don't know how exactly he would need to fix it.

To be honest, I've never really been much of a Mustang fan. But the new generation has some impressive performance numbers for the price and it looks pretty okay too.

I've always been a huge BMW fan, I learned to drive on an E46 325i and I feel like the 228i would be as fun as that car was but I'm worried I'll be disappointed by the N20's power output. I'd be open to buying a used 235 but they're impossible to find with the manual gearbox.
>>
>>14874287
Used E92 M3. There's a white hardtop 6mt sedan for sale in SoCal for $32k on M3Forum. Alternatively CPO M235i.

Otherwise Mustang if it HAS to be new.
>>
Last year i bought an E36 325is. I was desperate to get a vehicle and too excited to realize that it was in shit shape (it was my first car). I paid $1700 for it. The interior trim panels are falling off, there are dents and scrapes on the passenger side, it grinds going into 2nd, the clear coat is peeling, and I had to replace the suspension which was another $1300. Did i fuck myself? Can I make this BMW great again?

I have basically no money btw.
>>
>>14874242
Electronics on a BMW of that vintage have a tendency to go wrong when water gets to it. Oh, and rust.
>>
Two questions;
1. Is the E9X (92 specifically) reasonably reliable and not wallet-raping with N52/N53 engines?
2. Is the 328 slow enough to warrant holding out for a 330? My current DD is sub 5 seconds to 60 and I'd like to keep my next car below 6.
>>
>>14873678
i think systems like that are usually just motor amp draw monitors. if the window motor starts drawing way more amps than it should, and it isn't at the "top" position yet, it must be hitting something so it stops

i wonder if excessive friction on the tracks would cause that?
or maybe the motor just needs replacing

I have a 91 318is. The windows and blower won't run when the car is running. I checked all the relays and the starter wiring. What else could it be? I have the whole interior apart and don't want to put it back together until this is fixed.

Do a 318ti or a E30.

No point in doing a M3 conversion into a regular 318is E36. Sell it, then take the money/time/effort you would've spent on a nice E36 M3. At least the E30s and Ti are worth doing because its a smaller, shorter, lighter car than the regular M3.

>>
>>14887457
What year? For a 16 year old car it wouldn't be bad at all, owner probably had several. But a 10 year old one is seeing a decent amount of driving, definitely daily.

Regardless, condition always trumps mileage number. Remember, one is a physical state, the other is a mental construction.

But 100k shouldn't be of any concern if it looks clean and runs well.
>>
>>14887457
Not really. That's average mileage on those cars. They're already 10-15 years old and not getting any newer. A lot of the common BMW issues are more from age than mileage anyways, so even if you bought a 40-70k mile car at a premium it'd still have the same crappy plastic/rubber bits that fell apart on the 100k mile car.

Auto has less CO2 and is therefor more affordable tax wise where I live.

Plus I spend most of my time in heavy traffic.

I know they're not valid reasons, but I still love it! :P

I don't know about E34, but coming from a no-amenities jap shitbox this is what I found cool about my E39. A lot of these are going to be dependent on what packages the car has.
>automatic dimming mirrors so you don't get blinded at night
>OBC menu that can tell you lots of cool stuff like exactly how much fuel is in your tank to the tenth of a liter
>speed sensitive radio, as your engine gets louder/quieter it adjusts the volume to compensate
>rain sensing wipers, also speed sensitive
>if you're ever in a serious car crash, a small explosive charge attached to the battery terminal goes off (the battery is in the trunk) to prevent any fires
>you can push the max AC button while the car is off and it'll vent the remaining engine heat into the cabin
>roll down/roll up all windows with car key
>upper blend valve for climate control, you can blow cold air on your face while having your feet heated
>alarm system includes internal motion sensor and tilt sensor, nobody can jack your rims
>heated mirrors, locks, and washer jets
>car tells you when any of the various fluids is getting low, when you have low tire pressure, or if any bulbs are out and which one it is
>passenger mirror points down in reverse so you can check if you're within the lines
>you can't shut your hand in the window
>entire interior is soundproofed as fuck
>>
>listening to eurobeat while driving my bimmer

Maximum comfy.

>sitting in bmw with slav friends

Make sure the rear subframe mounts has been reinforced, or at least is free for cracks.

I also recommend all e46 m3 owners to read http://www.m3forum.net/m3forum/showthread.php?t=190111 Nice info and links to common diys

Drive over speedbump going 10-20mph
Always turns off when I do that.
>>
>>14895316
Yeah too bad there arent many speed bumps on highways/autobahns
No changes in engine performance however. Probably a lambda sensor or mixture management error
>>
>>14895327
Then drive over a curb.
It's like a steep speed bump that pedestrians walk on.

sweet, what engine?
Isnt the ride too stiff with 7 series wheels?
>>
>>14895423
2.8 sadly
the main reason it rides is stiff is because of the we put on coil overs
its not a terrible ride but it could be better
>>
>>14892628
if your looking for a 4 door get the 1 series, if you want a 2 door get the 2 series
I personally like the 2 door better
