>car manual says use gasoline with an anti-knock rating of 87 or a research octane number of 91

So regular or premium? Which one is it? I'm in the US.

87 octane for you, in the US we use Anti-Knock aka (R+M)/2
>>
I had a 99 explorer I used to go to my ranch. Put premium in it the last 4 years of its life. Almost made it to 200,000 on it, before trading it in. The mechanic who looked it over attributed the reason it lasted so long was because of the premium gas. I now put premium in all my old vehicles.
>>
huh?

In the US octane numbers are RM2 or (R + M) / 2.

RON: Research Octane Number is based on chemistry, and usually produces a higher number
M: Motor octane number is based on a standard test using a small engine, and usually produces lower number
RM2 is the average, of course.

Too much information, but always use anti-knock number RM2,

My dad's got an '89 ranger with 255,000 miles and counting and has never had a drop of anything other than 87 octane, and trop artic oil.

Higher octane does not mean better, so you are just wasting money if your vehicle does not take advantage of it.

Your car will automatically adjust ignition timing to the gas you put in, its not always better for it though.

>you will never be able to pay $1 a gallon for gas ever
Put that in your 1.2L shitbox.
>>
My evo uses half 93 and half e85
>>
>>14846576
Question, does leaded fuel yield better performance than unleaded?
>>
>>14851227
Depends on how old the car is.
>>
>>14850922
eurotards still haven't figured out that there are two methods of calculating octane
>>
87 in my Ford
93 in my Mercedes
if the compression calls for it, use it.

Gasoline octane measurements is the one thing that gets every Eurotard to come out of hiding, turn up their noses and say "heh, we have like a zillion octane here, fat Americans!"

Meanwhile they know fucking nothing about cars and don't realize the octane numbers are just measured differently.

Hopefully having higher numbers on your pump makes you feel better about fueling up your 1.2L econobox and paying stupid gas prices.

Depends on whether its got pre smog era heads with brass or shitsteel valve seats.
