Hi /o/. I'm starting an engineering job in silicon valley on May 1st.
Rent in the bay area is absurdly high and I want to save money (and most of my income) by converting an SUV into a camper and living in it. I am quitting my job after a year to travel God's gift to Earth: The United States of America. For this I will need something with 4WD and a bit of space.
So far I have looked into these guys:
- Toyota 4Runner
- Toyota RAV-4
- Nissan XTerra

I want an SUV for the "stealth" while working (don't want to be the creepy guy with a van). Any suggestions? Thanks!

You should be looking at only two:
-Landcruiser, FJ62 or FJ80 (FJ60 if you don't mind carbs)
-Cherokee XJ

Both are far more overland compatible AND off road capable.

i dont get it. you are starting the job in sillicon valley in may, but quitting it after a year to travel to...the U.S.? unless my brain is dead this morning...wtf do you mean?
>>
>>14845797

If I live in a car I am saving 90+% of my income. By the end of the year I will have around $90k~ in savings. I will then leave my job and travel the country. I plan on landing either back in San Francisco or NYC at which point I will get another full time job. What are you not getting?

Sorry anon I don't want to take this off-topic but my curiosity is winning.

I understand showering with a gym membership, and I guess using a laundromat to wash and iron your clothes. What do you propose to eat? Fast food for a year? BBQ in the park? Microwave in a panel van?

As to your original question, I'd go with a full size van, E-series or Express, for maximum space and privacy. If you're a smaller person and think you can fit yourself and all your possessions into a tinted (ie, just as creepy) Jeep XJ, that's a good option as well.

Going to be hard as fuck to stealth camp on the peninsula, you'll have to drive out to Pescadero or out by Soquel Demo Forest or something like that, I can't really think of anywhere else you aren't going to get discovered and hassled
>>
>>14846631
Why?
>>
>>14846659
Because everywhere is developed, people are aware of weirdos parking in their neighborhood or by their business, and Mid Pen Open Space district has tons of Rangers that won't let anyone get away with camping for free.

You really won't unless you plan on driving in snow, a lot. You'll get a lot more use out of 2WD.

>>- Toyota 4Runner
>>- Toyota RAV-4
>>- Nissan XTerra
None of these are appropriate of converting into a camper. You need something bigger like Suburban sized. Unless you're a midget, then these would be fine.

Your best bet would be to do something like your picture, OP, convert a van into a camper.
>>
>1st gen tundra extended cab

I mean you can do whatever you want, but you should really consider what these people itt are saying about your employment history.

>inb4 I don't care

Are you going to tell that to the person interviewing you? This isn't high school anymore, there's no more handouts.

That said, if you're going to live out of your daily, a van is your best bet. Especially one with a long wheelbase. You'll be so cramped and uncomfortable in an SUV, you're going to regret that. Unless you're like 5 feet tall, in that case go ahead.

Also why the fuck do you care about what vehicle people see you drive, but when there's a major gap in employment history you don't give a shit? Do you know what priorities are?
>>

Woah, check out the hate.

What's up OP. Astro or safari in your area?
2003 to 2005 had 4 wheel discs, 6 lug wheels, bigger leafs more of a work van. I got an awd 03 that needed work and care off a scumbag collegiate lesbian for 400 bucks.
You better be good with bondo and front suspension bits, but both of those are stupid easy and can be put off till summer.

It's one thing to sleep in a puffy tent in the woods, it's quite another thing in San Jose.

I lived in a 2nd gen 4runner for a while, wasn't huge inside but it was comfy, biggest issue was storage space.

I'm 6'2 and I had room to stretch out if was in the back laying diagonally.
>>
>>14847548
Pay your camping fees where? Have you ever camped on the Mid Peninsula? Probably not, because there is only one campground, you can only stay there a limited amount of time, and even if you could it's $30 a day anyway so you wouldn't even be saving money over a San Jose apartment
>>
>>14848167
Dude, someone can easily get into any vehicle in 3 seconds if they really want to. Why would they though? If you're a pussy then you shouldn't be attempting this to start with.

The only cheap option that would keep you relatively safe from hypothetical inner city super-predators is a box truck since you might be able to call the cops between when you heard them breaking into the cab and when they got it hotwired and drove it into the bay with you in it but at that point you should just go with a trailer.
>>
>>14845699
is this dude fucking serious? you're starting an engineering job, working for ONE YEAR, living in a FUCKING SUV, and fucking QUITTING to "travel the united states." Are you joking? Literally, and I've seen some stupid shit, you have to be the BIGGEST idiot I have ever seen in my life. Get a real place to live, fucking go camping on the weekends, and use your 2+ vacation weeks from your JOB to travel around. Holy fuck, no wonder people hate our generation. If I ever met you in real life I'd beat you to the brink of death, so you can use that health insurance from that JOB you should have. Fucking retarded piece of shit.

Look for a rust free 3rd gen 4runner that runs well and hasn't been off road. Toyota does not mean indestructible or maintenance free tho, so check typical things you'd check on a used car. This will get better mileage than an FJ80 and work just as well unless you're doing a legit expedition

So this thread gave me the camper bug. Check out this fucking creepmobile. My super jew senses tell me I could buy it for like $200. I'm sure the interior is shit but I would just gut it except for the plumbing and maybe the stove then lay down some hardwood floors and bolt down like a craftmatic bed for both sitting and sleeping with some lightweight classy cabinets and a 12v entertainment center.

What would I do with it, you ask? I have no idea I just like to accumulate cool stuff.

Why the fuck do you need 4x4.
4X4 only excludes 99% of vans and leaves you with soccer mom suvs where the living space is wasted by 6 more seats than OP needs.

For an engineer, OP sure lacks any critical thinking skill.

And who says you need 4x4 anyway.
A 4" lift blocks and a set of all terrain tyres and a van can go more places than a stock SUV can.

And for places that a lifted van can't go, you'd need a purpose built off road rig.

Smart enough to get a job as an engineer but dumb enough to just throw it away?

You do realize that companies talk with each other right? at least big ones do. When you go and tell your boss "I'm leaving" in a year for some bullshit reason you can be sure it's going to bite your ass when you try to come back.

Still, its wasted space that could be put to better use.
Just the fact that a van has sliding doors will make your life a million times easier when getting in/out
