Hey /o/ used to come here a lot. I've been tinkering on building my own cafe racer for a while now. But I really have little to no mechanic skills. I don't care if it takes me 1 year or 5 I just want to build my own bike. So where do I start?
>>14838452
same thing here, thinking about an RD
First you have to grow a beard and immerse in the Hipster culture.
Here's a tip. Once you put stolen parts together it becomes a new bike just with some stolen qualities
>>14838452
>Find bikes you like the look of
>Buy a bike
>Figure out what they modified
>Figure out how they modified it
>Acquire skills to make said modifications or seek out others to do it for you
If you've got any specific questions just shoot.
>buy vintage bike
>chop it up and ruin it
>sell it on Craig's list after you realize it's not for you
>>14838528
If I wasn't partially Asian I'd have that beard by now.
>>14838707
I dealt is like to get the cheapest non functioning bike I can get and then add onto it with newer better parts. The frame is my biggest issue, then the engine.
>>14838452
If you dont know what you're doing dont ruin the small amount of stock UJMs left. Buy someone elses, its not like you have any unique or exciting ideas to add to the style.
>>14838863
The pic was just something I pulled off google. Do you know anything about old Honda motorcycles from the 70s? Particularly the XL175 and XL350
>buy cheap british bike
>apply clip-ons
>???
>profit
>>14838872
The dual sports from the 70's don't make good cafe racers but they can make good scrambler/offroad themed bikes
>>14838927
What about them particularly wouldn't make a good racer?
>>14838452
Pic related was mine.
>change bars
>change seat
Watch everyone get mad cuz you changed bars and seat.
>>14838940
The frames aren't as flat as something like a cb series bike, which makes an odd look when you at a cafe seat. They have different suspension geometry from road bikes as well, which makes 18 inch wheels look out of place, and makes the handling not very good
>>14838970
Would ride tho
>>14838952
I kind of like the scrambler type bikes. Could be a good alternative. I'm mostly looking for a solid everyday around town bike. I absolutely hate how choppers and gook crotch rockets look.
>>14839035
Me too. That's why I got a dual sport.
>>14839042
Could either of those Hondas I mentioned handle hills? And for around $400 how big of a project am I expecting?
>>14839070
The 350 more so than the 175.
Both are fairly slow though.
They are stupid simple bikes and cheap as hell. So as long as nothing is wrong internally then you're golden. Remember theses engines weren't built to last long. Like 20k miles it's going to need major service.
What models should I look for on CL for under 5k?
I can work on cars fine. Haven't ever ridden before. Looking for a little racer to build and learn on that i can take with me to Chicago next year.
>>14839080
I heard the 175 has leaking issues. Speed isn't too big of a priority. If the 350 can make it to around 50-55 mph then that's perfect. I think it's also around 7000 miles.
>>14839104
Bump. Cmon, spoon feed me an answer.
>>14839613
What are your goals
>>14838452
Did you not ask dbt because we would all tell you to kill yourself instead?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sbu6nXV3xZ4
>>14840100
Not OP. But /dbt/ is pretty terrible.
>>14840117
Is that because you do not have a bike anon?
>>14840122
I have two bikes. And /dbt/ is still Terrible.
>>14840122
#rekt
>>14840134
Did you fall for the gs500 meme and now have buyers remorse? its ok anon.
>>14840145
Nope
KTM 530 and VT700
Been riding since I was a young lad.
>>14840154
>he doesn't even have a petercruiser
>>14840122
>>14840145
>>14840159
This is why /dbt/ is terrible
>>14840154
an 08 530?
>>14840173
09 exc-r
>>14840198
you had any problems with the gear box transferring oil into the engine?
my 08 450 exc-r won't fucking stop it, replaced all the seals and its still transferring oil, which tells me i fucked up when i put it back together, any ideas or havent had to fix that problem yet lol?
>>14840212
Transferring oil into where specifically?
I haven't had any issue like that and I'm over 40k miles.
>>14840232
Started happening at about 15,000km, the engine literally sucks all of the oil out of the gearbox and into the engine, takes about 20 minutes to happen then drains back into the gear box over about 5 hours
how can you not into cafe?
Remove fenders, install solo seat, clubmans/clip-ons, and rearsets. Ride it like you stole it.
Go clip-ons > clubmans. A year after clubman bars I switched to clip-ons, a world difference. Your wrists will thank me.
Pic: some shit cruiser I traded for a guitar amp and 'cafe'd'
>>14840340
Before I butchered it
>>14840100
I really don't see what's wrong with most of these.
>>14838552
Read it in his voice. Good episode.
