The point of the I4 is you can build a 10 second car for the cost of a GT track pack that runs 11s. You can't go much further though, and the Coyote can be taken much further of course. But dollar for dollar the Ecoboost competes with the GT. It's a subjective matter of preference really.

Here's an idea:
Get a V8 'stang engine but then make it so that the rearmost two pistons are not actually attached to the standard exhaust and intake runners. Reconfigure the cams so that these two pistons only pump air, acting as an inbuilt compressor (supercharger) unit, forcing extra air down into the intake runners of the front 6 cylinders and supercharging each of the other cylinders with 0.333 extra total volume of air per cylinder.
Boom, turned a V8 effectively into an uber-supercharged V6 and all you had to do was install new cams and runners.
