why
all of the cleacoat on my roof is peeling because of sun damage. I never bothered dealing with it because it's a cheap car and lazy. This picture was 2 years ago; clearcoat now has holes that cover like 30% of the roof and now I wish I had done something.

Wax helps with improving the look of your paint but doesn't do much to protect the places that rust the most. Most body rust is from the outside-in. Salt and moisture like to sit up in the fender and quarter lips. Proper undercoating and washing is most important.
I just simply don't like in an area with salt in the air or on the roads.

If you do nothing but autistically wash and dry it frequently, it goes great for keeping your car clean, but it's terrible for the overall look of your paint job. It helps to not give a shit about fading paint.
If you own a Corvette or something and you want to retain the value and looks then I could understand but wax isn't vital to the functionality even long term, I know people who wax their recently purchased cars and still have shit all over the clear-coat because they park in an industrial area, wax doesn't help with that either.

Wax is a layer of protection over the clear coat. Wax does nothing more than sacrifice itself so the clear coat remains perfect. At least on a modern car. I had a 2004 Dakota that I waxed twice in the 8 years I owned it. It looked glossy and new when I sold it. Modern paint is pretty amazing.
