Everyone gets scads of recalls, nowdays. This is because it's cheaper to do a recall than let something minor slide, in the modern liability environment.
What is important is how smoothly the recall goes and how swiftly the work is completed.
I've had recall work done on a 5 series I owned about 6 years ago. Not a big deal, just a minor case of component failure leading to firey death and another one where the seatbelt adjuster breaks and the seatbelt tugs your head off in a crash.
No, far more important is the cost of regular maintenance, the hit you take on depreciation, and what you're getting in the car.
An E39 was a better car than anything the General made in that era, at least in terms of how it drove, how it sounded, how it felt, and how it was designed.
The new 4 Series is not.
BMW has lost it's way chasing profits in China, and the General has improved greatly.
I don't need another sportscar right now, but if I were cross shopping the M4 and it's competitors, I'd either get an C63 (expensive to buy, expensive to own, still feels like a car that should be more expensive than a Camaro), or a Camaro SS and a gigantic pile of tires to use up.
The interior of the BMW and the Audi feel nicer than the Camaro, but like $6,000 nicer, not $36,000 nicer, and like Motor Trend says, the Camaro has better steering feel, better shifter feel, better exhaust note, and a much better powerband.
