Why the FUCK does this pattern exist?
>>
Champ, you usually have to get past the lockout to achieve reverse. In older VWs, you push down, then over...
>>
>>14818518
Because people aren't illiterate retards like you, OP
>>
>>14818518
How would you shift into R accidentally? I have that shift pattern, never happened, not even close. R requires more force and moving it a lot more sideways.
>>
>>14818518
any good manual has some kind of failsafe for this. in my golf gti you had to push the shifter downwards and then put it into R. in my mustang you have to pull up on the shifters scrotum and then shift into first.

it's just so much safer that way.
>>
>>14818518
Yeah, that never happened unless you have a faulty stick. If you want to shift into R, you have to pull up your shifter a bit to shift into reverse, otherwise you're shifting into 1st gear.

0/10, try harder.
>>
>>14818518
Cars with these shift patterns don't just effortlessly slip into reverse.

There's usually some sort of resistance like pushing down/ pulling up shift knob or having to push harder to the left. Feels completely different from the forward gears.

OP has never driven a manual.

Simply put, you can't just shift into R without either lifting it or pressing it down in other cars.

OP confirmed for never having driven a manual car in his life before.

My car has a gate that blocks the reverse gear unless you're at a complete stop. Even then you have to pus pretty hard to bypass the gate and get it into gear.

Still getting used to it, but a mistake even 1 in 100,000 shifts can fuck you. Haven't you ever accidentally shifted to 3rd instead of 1st? You immediately corrected it, but imagine how much worse it'd be to accidentally shift to reverse instead of first in a situation. A microsecond is enough to hit a car behind you

I drove my fathers E21 before he sold it, I understand your pain. There was only minimal resistance when going to R and I would always worry about accidentally putting it in R, but somehow never did... I love BMWs but this system is shit. I have driven the new 1 series and the X1 as rental cars and there was definitely more resistance when shifting to R, but I can see how the that mechanism would wear down with age and how it might become a problem.

http://www.edmunds.com/car-reviews/top-10/top-10-most-american-trucks-for-2015.html

I will give you the Tundra has more US sourced content then many of its competitors, which is hilarious, and that a few undergo final assembly in Mexico, but most of the trucks are built in the USA

see the Flint plant here
http://gmauthority.com/blog/gm/gm-manufacturing/

See the Dearborn, and Kentucky plants here
https://corporate.ford.com/company/operation-list.html#s1f0

and for Chrysler see...uh...well here

We certainly engineer and design them for better or worse (usually worse lmao)
