I have to pull up on my shift knob to get into reverse, like pulling the foreskin up sorta so I don't try to go into reverse from 5th. It's a GM car so not unique to Europe.

I drove my boss's Ford Ranger, had one of those things on the shifter that you needed to pull up to change to reverse. I imagine it's so that you don't put it into reverse accidentally while driving.
Also the clutch felt like shit, there was no travel on it, so it feels like an on and off deal.

I think it's common in six speeds where the reverse gear is furthest right. That way you can shift into 5th or 6th quickly by just slamming the selector all the way right, then up/down.
