914's arent bad
944's are actually not a bad first car, unless you dont do the work yourself, in which case you cant afford any porsche.
914s are pretty rough to drive, if you've driven a Beetle or VW bus it's not far off. The shifting is possibly the worst of any sports car, feels like an oar in a barrel of jello. I would look into a Karmann Ghia over a 914 just because they are a lot cheaper and drive about the same.

As a first car, the 912s and 356s are unobtainable. As a first Porsche, they are great choices. Although really an air cooled 911 is the usual recommendation.
