It does if you drive like a granny taking forever to leave the traffic lights, because you let the motors do the work instead of the engine. Of course, that is a nuisance for all the other drivers who have to wait through two red lights because Todd is driving his fucking Prius.

Not really, they're still a prius.

It's still widely regarded as the cuck of all cars.

If you want economy, you can get literally any diesel from the last 25 years and it'll get like 60mpg
>>
>>14805916
>artificial tests

Electric motors are 1000% better at leaving stoplights than gas engines. You are le delusional gas guzzling moron.

The real fucking cuck is the guy in a tdi jetta. A gutless diesel girl's car.
>>
>>14806120
Only if it's a piece of shit. If you want a car with comparable acceleration it's going to be less efficient and more polluting.

TDI Jetta = poorfag homosexual or teenage girl

Prius = Eco minded hippie adult

>>14806127
read http://www.chron.com/cars/article/Why-Prius-owners-drive-like-that-4270897.php again
in the prius, if you gun it when you get the green light, the gas engine kicks in. You need to drive like a coasting cuck to achieve the advertised mileage.
>>
>>14806180
Which is what a fucking prius or tdi driver aims to do anyway.

Go buy a TDI Jetta and blow smelly farts as you gun it get shit mileage on expensive diesel genius. If you gun it in a Jetta the turbo kicks in.

I live in California and the average prius driver I see drives fast. They are commuters who drive long distance and want to get home.

>Go buy a TDI Jetta and blow smelly farts as you gun it get shit mileage on expensive diesel genius. If you gun it in a Jetta the turbo kicks in.
The turbo is part of what helps it be more efficient. And diesels' strength is torque anyways so it won't be a big deal if you gun it a bit.

Yeah, its actually more. Its a 15-20 year old German Car, remember? It'll nickle and dime you. For what? Its still a slow roly poly econobox that makes a grand total of 100-110hp in a 3200lb car. Fuck, you'd make a better argument if you bought a used Civic/Corolla.

And here's the thing. The Prius is JUST a battery ($1300 from Dorman).

Otherwise its pretty much identical to a similar year Corolla in reliability while being a bigger, nicer, more modern car than a MKIV VW. Keyless pushbutton start, bluetooth/navi, 5-star safety rating (dirt cheap insurance), dirt cheap parts (used in tons of fleets across the nation), cubbyholes fucking EVERYWHERE, and spacious/practical as hell from being a 5 door liftback. And they're cheap used. $4-7000 gets you a 05-07. Take the money you save, buy a second impractical unreliable shitbox (used M3/RX8, Turbo Miata/RX7, cantturn camaro, whatever) and use the Prius to make money and get you through shitty winters and a boring commute.

cheapest mkiv tdis are $3-4000 needing some reconditioning and have 210-260k miles. not even bothering looking at autos (vw automatics are fucking garbage)

then buy a 2.0 aba you moron instead of wasting time maintaining a shitbox daily time you can spend making money or working on a project better than a shitbox german honda civic that cant turn does 0-60 in 11 seconds and only redeeming feature is having soft touch plastics that scratch to fuck and a interior that smells like crayons

the prius is the jew's choice. you buy one because they're ridiculously reliable and cheap to own. there's a ton of them in junkyards from accidents because they literally made 10-50 priuses/prii/whatever for every tdi

that's another thing, you're ONLY really going to find TDIs in libtard areas cities with a high leftist population because they were special order cars that cost a heavy premium over a standard golf/jetta, the prius is sold in toyota dealers across the nation which there's far more of

i don't bother with fucking pos mkivs because i have better moneypits to actually deal with than a literal cantturn german honda civic with 110hp/3200lbs (actual honda civics can turn and weigh 1000lbs less and dont break as often).

I'd say that the Prius got a lot of engineering promise for racing, off-road, anything you can imagine really, it's just that Toyota never went ahead and cashed in on that promise, preferring to ride the "eco-train".
I mean, you guys know that all F1 cars are essentially hybrids by now with their KERS systems, right?
Behold, the entirety of the Prius powerplant.
How does it werk? If you know how a planetary gear werks, you can figure it out just fine. If you can't, I'll post the second half of the infographic in a second.
>>
File: prius gearbox.jpg (63 KB, 786x492) Image search: [Google]
prius gearbox.jpg
63 KB, 786x492
>>14808398
You need only regard the right half of the picture here.

Basically, you can fine tune the actual power output at the wheels in any way you want through this electrical transmission setup. The Prius does not have a CVT (continously variable transmission), it has an IVT (infinitely variable transmission); the RPM of the engine can be at 8000 and the transmission can make it 0 at the wheels. Due to this it has NO clutch, the engine is always connected metal to metal straight to the wheels. It also does not have an electric motor symbiote, it has two, and they ARE the transmission, together with a planetary gear jammed in between.

The reason that the Prius can make more mpg in the inner city is simple; on regular cars, when you stand at a red light, you push in the clutch and the engine turns empty, converting gasoline or diesel into exclusively exhaust and noise. On the Prius, while you stand there, the electric motor steering simply switches the engine to crank the electrical generator, charges up the batteries on idle or fast idle depending on the charge status of the batteries and therefore wastes none of the fuel as random stink out the exhaust. Any drop burned is made to work, which cannot be said of cars with a clutch.
>>
>>14808413
Actually any hybrid is better at city because they use the motors to get the car moving, motors have full torque from start
>>
>>14808420
The torque for three seconds of getting rolling is utterly irrelevant. The up to twenty minutes standing around at red lights, intersections and other traffinc obstructions with your engine puffing the gasoline away on idle, every fucing time you head out, that is what gives all cars that DO have a clutch worse gas mileage in the inner city than on the highway.

A completely ass-backwards concept people have accepted for automotive fact. here you are, going a maximum of 50 kmh in the inner city, and you burn more fuel than if you were blasting hundreds of miles in a few hours on the interstate? The sorry state of the gearboxes of this world should be lamented, not taken as fact. Engines are good nowadays, the big hangup are the gearboxes.
>>
>>14805976
>>14805952

t. prius drivers
>>
>>14808435
Germans had invented this thing that turned your engine off while you stopped on a stoplight and then it on as soon as you pressed the gas during the oil crisis. I don't remember what cars had it. Idling doesn't burn a lot tho.
>>
>>14807568
Yeah, a fucking video is a better way to decide whether a Prius is reliable than the mountain of data supporting the claim that it's the most reliable car on the road today.

I know about the start-stop automatic, and it is utter fucking shit. I talked to the engineers at Benz myself when I was doing a internship at the Untertürkheim factory complex, that thing is almost standard equipment on new Mercedes cars by now and they despise it although it does save dozens of liters of fuel in inner city traffic.

The reason is simple. It's greasing.

Take any shaft in the car. You do not have static greasing, you have dynamic greasing on these shafts. The difference: static greasing would be provided by a separate oil pump that always keeps the part afloat in a slime film of whatever grease is best for it. But this kind of technology does not pay to install on the tiny-ass shafts inside a car engine. You get static greasing on things like aircraft jet turbine center shafts, or steam turbine shafts in power plants.
In cars, you make do with dynamic greasing. That basically means, you dump oil onto the shaft, and the shaft greases itself while turning. This works okay for most applications because most applications don't have uber stresses on the turning shafts like you'd have on turbines.

But the start-stop-automatic fucks it.

Every time the engine stops, the greased part "sinks" to the bottom of the grease film (we're talking a few microns of grease here, bear with the picture for sake of exaggeration) and touches metal-to-metal. When you start it up again- GRRIND! It first needs to spin metal-to-metal far enough to re-grease itself. This erodes metal shafts grinding on one another horrendously when you start-and-stop a hundred times in the inner city. The engineers were complaining massively over ridiculous extra engine wear because of it. If you had static greasing, it would not happen, but you don't, because you're not a power plant steam turbine.

>>
>>14808491

Unfortunately you're right. I am suprised class 8s and medium duty trucks aren't running something like that though. Electric motors have max torque @1rpm righ where you need it to get the load moving.
>>
>>14808491
>>14808540
It's not too heavy at all if you move up to the right sizes. It could be heavy for a compact car like the Yaris but on a larger one like the Prius you ought to be able to install an old diesel generator as the main power plant.
>>
>>14808490
Yea but the German cars with start/stop are basically white goods, designed to last at a maximum 10 years then be recycled and replaced with a new model. The EU gets it's emissions down with ever efficient vehicles on the roads, the states get their stimulus and employment, and the companies stay in business by forever selling new cars.

Strange world we live in, a kind of progressive fascism.
>>
>>14808565
Trust me when I say that the engineers despise it. Most of them are old enough to still have been around or just have joined when stuff like the W123 or the W124 was making fresh, hard impressions on young impressionable engineers. And then the boss-crew of the company tells them to gimp their designs and make self-destructive wrinkles into them like the start-stop and they all slowly go jaded and grumpy over the years.
>>
>>14808572
I can imagine. Designed obsolescence is a cancer, but then so much of our economy is built around it. And I say this as a Yuropean libertarian (small l).

Do you realise just how little fuel a car uses while idling? Having to use more throttle to accelerate is what kills city driving mpgs

This. Also the high gear ratios.
There were cars in the 80s which achieved better mileage by using an overdrive box.
>>
>>14808766
An overdrive box only works when you're not actually hauling anything. Most cars nowadays have their 4th or 5th gear essentially already geared into an "overdrive" by just making it extra tall.
>>
>>14808780
Yeah but you don't get to use those gears in the city. 5th was always an overdrive, 4th is often 1:1.
>>
>>14808788
Well no fucking shit you don't get to use them, because if you're going that slow you might as well just shift up and lower the rippems that way. Do you think overdrive gears have some kind of special magic that makes them burn less? Just put it in third when you're driving 20mph and you get the same effect
>inb4 autotragic
>>
>>14808797
With an overdrive gearbox you could maybe use more gears for the same speed range, running at optimal rpms for longer.
>>
>>14808850
As long as you stay under 2k everything's alright / almost choking depending on your engine size, and the gears are already optimized for the only speeds that a car will realisitcally be traveling at. In Euro cities you have 30kmh, 50kmh. Two speeds for over 95% of the roads. The cars are already tuned to have their RPMs in the lows when you use the right gear for those speeds.
>>
>>14808898
The thing is, lugging the engine wastes fuel too. The ideal is going on the optimum rpms. And you don't get that just with 2nd and 3rd.
>>
>>14808939
Lugging an Overdrive box also wastes fuel, so there.
>>
>>14808943
The point is that you have more gears so you can keep on a more optimal range. Why do you think there are trucks with 18 speed transmissions?
>>
>>14808957
Because they weight 40 tons and if they wouldn't they'd be incapable of moving. Unless you're trying to move a F150 with a moped engine, you will not need this many gears in any way.
>>
>>14808961
Bullshit. Older ones had much fewer gears. It's about efficiency.
>>
>>14808961
Oh and I'm talking about overdrive, not reduction. It has nothing to do with towing, smartass. A continuously variable transmission ratio would be ideal but that's impractical.
>>
>>14808989
>ideal
LYL
I have a moped with a Variomatic CVT, it has about the same mileage as a compact car, but obviously isn't a compact car. CVTs are possibly the worst transmissions in the universe. How about you gimp scroll up and read my posts about the Prius gearbox being literally all you could ask for if you wanted something like a CVT except at no power loss?
>>
>>14808413
So GM Voltec vs Toyota HSD, which one is better?
>>
>>14809005
That's because real CVTs have huge power losses. If you could achieve the continuous ratio without that, they would be perfect.

>>
>>14809032
No, if I could build a perpetual motion machine that'd actually be much more efficient than any of your pipe dreams, but we're talking what can be done in reality, not blowing bubbles with spit here are we?
>>
>>14809038
I said "continuous variable transmission RATIO" for a reason. The closest you can get to that is having more discrete gears with smaller intervals.
>>
>>14809056
No actually, you could just read the way the Prius operates above, which is much closer.
>>
>>14809061
That requires a much more complex system. Overengineering if you will. For a measly 50 MPG. They achieved this in the 80s by keeping it simple and taxing the engine less. No fancy equipment (specially AC), light cars.
>>
>>14809073
And no crash safety to speak of, and the cars fucking died after a handful of years, and so on and so on, while I can get a Prius, with all the bonuses I'd want, and still get the great gas mileage. You jelly of engineering skill or what?

There is literally nothing wrong with the prius.

Yeah, it's slow as shit, doesn't look great. It's not supposed to. Most of the people on this board are not it's target demographic.

I think it's crazy how reliable these things are given how much technology and different parts they have are. The only real concern for long term maintenance is the battery, and since they sell so many of these fucking things you can find them everywhere.

I'm planning on trading in my rav4 for a prius soon. I don't need an suv, I've used it off road once when I went up a small Hill going camping. I don't care about performance I want reliability, low insurance, cost effectiveness. The prius is pretty much the ultimate car for people who don't give a shit about performance.
>>
>>14809124
Supposedly the battery isn't a big problem in second hand ones either.

Can someone confirm me on this? I want to recommend someone a CT200h to replace a shitty Peugeot with (the other car that's being considered is a Mitsubishi Mirage/Space Star)
