How catastrophic would it be to swap a V8 in a FWD Sedan? (say a W body car as some of them actually came with V8s albeit under-powered ones)

I heard the 4 speed transmissions found in early models weren't exactly made for them (V8s) and they would blow. what about the newer 6 speed transmission models? would they be stronger?

Check out the LS4. That's your best bet as far as a powerful, reliable FWD V8.

Anyways, does anyone think we should get a map going, like /dbt/? I think that'd be pretty cool, and it could help get some meetups organized.

I have a truck I got from my uncle and it looks like he put a Jet performance chip into it and a CAI. I'm not sure what to fuck with or what to leave yet. I'm assuming the chip is snake oil.

Are the LT1s in the F-body good? what kind of power could I expect from a cam, heads, bolt ons, etc?

>>14800060
I've heard that they develop some pretty serious oil leaks. I'd personally avoid the LT1. An LS1 would be a very easy drop-in.

If you're determined to stick with it, though, I'd estimate around 375-400 WHP with a medium-sized cam, a high-end set of heads, and full bolt-ons.

Here's a good article to look into if you go LS instead.

where do they leak oil from? isn't that repairable?

Nvm I found it. it leaks from the intake manifold, doesn't seem like that big of a deal.

>>
>>14800129
ok but an SS f body is way more expensive than a Z28 f body

also how is it superior besides being aluminum?
>>
>>14800150
Much more reliable, way more responsive to mods, meaning more potential for power, WAY bigger aftermarket.

The LT1 is a decent engine, but you'd be better off buying an LS1, rather than putting that money into the LT1.
>>
>>14800150
It's new everything.
>>
>>14800150
wait I'm an idiot, you can get a Z28 with an LS in the later models. looks like the SS just had some cosmetic stuff and some minor suspension stuff.

still tho, the LT equipped f body's are way cheap compared to the LS ones
>>
>>14800162
new doesn't always mean better. I want specifics not meme spouting

>>14800158
thanks. I'll look at the later LS equipped models then.
>>
>tfw my dodge truck's 360 is bigger then most of the shitty v8s in this thread and is considered small

Better engine design. Stronger block. Better heads and ignition system. Easy to mod. Huge after market
>>
>>14800164
Read the wikipedia page
>>
>>14800163
There's a reason for that. The engine is far less desirable.

I've been browsing craigslist for a while, looking for an older car I could build into a nice, quick street car. I've basically narrowed it down to either a 426 Hemi in a Duster, or a 429 Cobra Jet in a first-gen Mustang. Possibly a Torino, but I like the smaller cars, and a first-gen Mustang coupe would seem like a "slower" car at first glance to most teenagers trying to race their stock WRX for $100.

Clean-ass engine bay. Makes me jealous. I really need to detail mine.
>>
>>14800234
That 429 is a very wide block, and will require extensive modification to fit in between the shock towers of a first gen mustang.
A 426 hemi will require a special k member to fit in a duster.
Both of these swaps will require a staggering amount of work that most novice car enthusiasts are just not capable of.
Both swaps will require several thousands of dollars just for parts alone.
Dollar for dollar you would be better off with a different, more common engine.
Have you done your homework on this anon, or is it just a pipe dream?
>>
>>14801715
Just dreaming, yeah. I could get myself a Procharger kit AND a nitrous setup for my GTO for far less than the cost of a Hemi alone. And that alone would be enough to shit on anything that runs around here.

is my engine a v8? am new to this.
>>
>>14799971
1970 Toronado did it, and quite succesfully too with reviewers noting not much different handling difference from a RWD family sized car. I guess all the weight on the front wheels did it some good
>>
>>14801715
The 429/460's actually fit better than the FE they came with as far as width goes. It's the length that's a bit of a problem, though overcome with a Tbird short water pump. Crites is the main source of parts for this swap though some feel they have the engine higher and further forward than it could be.
