I just bought a 72 grand prix SJ. It has a 455 motor and it's carbureted. Any tips for driving a non-fuel injected car? Anything I should listen for. It runs really great and sounds like thunder when it's idling. All the mechanic shops in my area cant help me out. They just know how to plug a computer in and troubleshoot.

Let it warm up a bit before driving it. As far as what to look for just pay attention. Listen for odd sounds like popping, knocking, etc. There's lots of guides out there for tuning the carb and adjusting timing. Keep an eye on the spark plugs and oil. Also, we are cousins.
>>
>>14797937
Plant your foot and let the transmission take it to redline at least once per week.
>>

Damn nice poncho op.
Would look great with repop rallye II wheels.
>>
>>14798012
I thought that was an old wives tale about clearing the pipes out. I live in Michigan and I filled it last week with 90 octane gas with no ethanol cost me $50 and I only got 3/4 tank. Also put a bottle of seafoam in there.
>>
>>14798012
Factory carbs don't really have a problem with loading up like Holleys do. But you dont want to let it just idle all the time.
>>
>>14797997
When it first showed up I stared it out and it sounded amazing but once it got warm it stayed at 2k rpm I figured out you gotta stomp the gas so the choke disengages.
>>
>>14798031
DO NOT PUT SEAFOAM IN AN OLD CAR. It has alcohol in it. It will destroy your gaskets and o rings in the carb.
>>
>>14798039
Electric choke? Your idle should be more like 700 rpm.

You could have spent the money on fuel and got a full tank.
>>
>>14798044
I was reading in a forum it's good to put seafoam in every few thousands miles.
>>
>>14798050
It idled around 700rpm before it warmed up but it climbed to 2000rpm and I just hit the gas and I guess it opened the choke up and ran fine.
>>
>>14798070
dont. no reason to. Non-oxygenated fuel is fine on its own.
>>
fuckin cool. let it warm up a bit before you drive it, dont try to give it the beans if you dont have your float bowl levels correct otherwise you could have a stumble. also dont plant it in high gear at low speeds, youll just make it lean out. pay attention to your air density and get the correct jets
>>
>>14798150
It should all be set perfect. I mean I did stall it out once but I think that was my fault. I didn't let it warm up all the way.

I hear all these suped up v8's around but do you think a carb 455 sounds better worse or the same?
>>

I will plan on uploading the startup and idle to youtube. But the car is in a storage unit right now and I live in Michigan so it might be a week until I can bring it back home.

Negro calm your tits

For those who don't know, Pontiac didn't use different size block castings. Everything 326 to 455 was done the same size. They just messed with bore/stroke to make the 455. In all truth, the Pontiac 326-455 IS larger then a SBC no matter what, so you could say the Pontiac 326 is a big-block if you really wanted to get technical with it. Personally, I'd call a 455 Pontiac a big-block because it is a big goddamn block, doesn't matter what the manufacturing tech behind it is.

That's the Pontiac 326-455 on the left, and a 350 Chevy on the right if you want to see what I mean.

Don't give me this half-measure crap to justify your or anyone else's ignorance. Pontiac never made a big block, plain, simple, end of discussion. It doesn't matter if it's externally bigger than a SBC because comparing it to a SBC is an apples to oranges metric. There's industrial Caterpillar inline sixes that dwarf something like the meme machine that is the 2JZ, but that doesn't suddenly make a 2JZ a "small block Toyota" or "small block JZ." But I'll humor you for a moment and tell you that while Pontiacs were bigger than their SBC counterparts, they were smaller than BBCs- So let's get REAL FUCKIN' technical and call them what they would be by your standards, "slightly smaller big blocks." No no no, that's stupid... How about "a little bit bigger than small block; big block?" Or we could not do this because that would be fucking retarded. If you'd personally call ANY Pontiac a big block then you're PERSONALLY a fucking moron, how's that classification strike you, shithead?

So putting round headlights on that was a totally last minute change right? There is no way that front end was designed for anything other than rectangular lights.

I'm not trying to start anything, just trying to explain what the difference is without writing a book about it.

>>14798661
You'll hear a lot of differing opinions about seafoam, I'm surprised that forum didn't explode when the guy posted about it. My personal opinion, its nothing to stress too hard over, just keep your vehicle maintained well and it will be fine.

You have any plans for it, or are you gonna run it as it is? Either way, its a beautiful car.
>>
>>14798735
>autist

Accuracy is important. You'd balk if I had the gall to call your Nova a Ventura and after being corrected I told you to "calm down" and that they are "technically the same basically." Moreover, /o/ wouldn't let it slide if I called a D16 and B18 the same so I'm not going to with this.
>>
>>14798737
Extra Medium!
>>
>>14798801
It's not that you weren't accurate, it's that you had to write 2 paragraphs worth of words so say "well Pontiac used their own blocks that weren't quite big blocks and not quite small blocks and used different bores and strokes to get different displacements"
>>
>>14798795
>just trying to explain the difference

Yeah, and Disco Nova did that concisely before you showed up and started talking out of your ass. You even had a good thing going for about the first sentence or two before you started shoving in gay shit about what "you personally" thought when the matter is very cut and dry.
>>
>>14798813
No I used two paragraphs worth of words in an effort to semi-publicly humiliate someone so that maybe the next time they went to put stupid thoughts into words, they might think back and remember this moment and THEN remember that Pontiacs never made a big block.
>>
>>14798854
>in an effort to semi-publicly humiliate me

We are on a Mongolian basket-weaving forum talking about old car engines. If you think anyone here cares about 'public humiliation,' you are in the wrong place.

And the difference between a big block and a small block is hardly a 'cut and dry' measurement. We have big-block Chevy 348's and Ford 352's and small block Chevy 400's. Hell, we have people making 500ci+ small block motors now. It is hardly a hard-and-fast science to determine who makes what, where, especially with a engine platform that has as wide a range as the Pontiac. People have been arguing about what and where it falls for years.

I've no problem with a debate, but having a debate with someone that turns to personal attacks at the first sign of a differing opinion or a rouge sentence isn't a proper debate, is it?
>>
>>14799030
>And the difference between a big block and a small block is hardly a 'cut and dry' measurement

You're making it too complicated. Did the company that designed it refer to it as a "big" or "small" block and was it designed as a separate architecture from an engine that existed. Simple. There's no debate to be had on something when the person in question is dead wrong and wanting to split hairs. Wanna debate something else stupid next you retard? Earth being round? Sun being the center of our solar system?
