Emissions control is gay.

Only active when not on throttle. Helps not end the world as we know it. Anyone removing it on a street car is an idiot.

Only reduces emissions on diesel engines.

>>
>>14794700
Nitrous oxide has a net cooling effect on the atmosphere though.

By using EGR's you're literally increasing the amount of warming effect
>>
It's difficult to like it. Circulating exhaust gas into nice, clean, cold intake air always struck be as bonderline sacrilige.
If it wasn't for emissions laws and financial penalties, no-one would use it. Plus, NOx control gets in the way of more interesting technologies, and shifts focus from increased specific power/driveability/fuel economy, which is what drivers care about.

In a way, it's a good thing the EU and EPA make us do it, otherwise we'd end up poisoning ourselves.

The best thing about DPF's is that they filter out only the largest particulate matter, leaving only the really small, nasty shit that can penetrate the lining of your alveoli and give you cancer.

Actually port injected engines have fairly low NOx emissions compared to DI. However diesels (as being mainly DI and running ridiculous AFR) are surely an issue.
>>
EGR only functions in part throttle situations. The guys crying about EGR are fucking idiots.
>>
>>14797043
Qualified mechanic/engineer here. Egr is a fucking bad idea. Reduces lifespan of the engine, builds up and eventually blocks the intake manifolds ports. Like the other anon said, might as well shit into your own mouth and call it saving the environment.
>>
>>14794648
EGR is a disaster on the 2000-2002 Toyota MR2 Spyder. The shitty precat matrix would come loose and get sucked back into the cylinders by the EGR/VVT system under certain conditions. Ceramic in your crankcase is a goddamn mess, RIP engine.

I don't really get it when fags think that cars are so badly harmful to the environment.

They sure aren't healthy when you live in the city and breathe fumes in all day, but with so many catalytic converters and shit as standard it's nowhere near as bad as people assume.

I don't see trees that grow on the side of the road wither and die, or grass dry and and go discolored. Where is the fucking issue?
Global warming is a meme and the I don't care if I sound edgy, but the entire world should follow in China's footsteps and impose a 1 child-per-family legislation to decrease worldwide consumption and waste levels.

EGR kills part-throttle responsiveness.
>>
>>14797172
Sure they want to make money but manufacturers pretty much never deliberately design something to fuck over their customers. Doesn't mean they don't fuck up, but if they actually wanted to screw you over they'd do what you said on all turbos not just one or two.
>>
>>14797211
The problem is not just turbos anon, its the massive increase in mundane or otherwise repurposed parts. The motor industry is design-wise ruled by greedy fucking jews only interestedin the bottom line.

I modify and block every egr i can get my hands on, because it increases the lifespan (sometimes significantly) of injectors, valves and piston rings.

>3mpg worse than non EGR

Burn 100 gallons of gas, but go x-300 miles. Now you need to burn more gas, which creates more exhaust fumes and uses up more natural resources.

But at least we saved the saved the earth guys!!

>>
>>14798443
Wat? How?
It's only a negligible amount I would think.
>>
>>14798443
Maybe it's just diesels that it affects negatively.

From Wikipedia: Though engine manufacturers have refused to release details of the effect of EGR on fuel economy, the EPA regulations of 2002 that led to the introduction of cooled EGR were associated with a 3% drop in engine efficiency, bucking a trend of a .5% a year increase.
>>
>>14798475
>>14798482
It should (theoretically) allow higher AFRs and reduce pumping losses.
Whether it does that in practice is debateable.
>>
>>14797360
Just stick to old cars, that's what I'm doing.

Unless of course you're in california, in which case you'd be stupid not to leave.
>>
>>14798494
I don't think that works for diesels. The AFR is extremely lean (it's one cause of the high NOx emissions, the other being the stratified charge), and pumping losses are low.
Gasoline is a different matter - pumping losses are very high at part load (ie during real world driving), due to the pressure drop over the throttle plate. EGR allows you to open the throttle wider while maintaining stochiometic AFR, thus reducing pumping losses.
>>
>>14797076
Agreed. NOx isn't so much of an issue in gasoline engines due to the homogeneous charge, and also it's easy to convert using a three-way catalyst.
NOx in diesels is a complete pain. The extremely lean AFR near the cylinder walls and high combustion temperatures and high NOx formation. And the overall lean AFR means you can't use a simple rhodium catalyst, but need more complex systems such as selective catalytic reduction.
Unless someone can make HCCI viable or there is some revolution in catalyst chemistry, it's hard to see a future for diesel in passenger cars.
