So my wife wants to buy a Suburban next year. Basically to fit our kids and others when we travel. Is there another option i should look at or is the suburban a good choice?

It's perfect if you live in the countryside, have 5 kids, 3 Golden retrievers and need to tow your 10000lbs boat regularly. Otherwise kill your wife and your kids because you shouldn't have reproduced.

They are fine.
My cousins love suburbans
They replace em after 250K miles and keep buying new ones.
>>
>>14789408
This deserves serious consideration.
>>
>>14789399
The Suburban is your best bet just for the size. Seats 8 and there's still room in the back for your shit. The Tahoe, Expedition, and Sequoia lose that cargo space in the back with all the seats filled.

Also, get a new black one so you can drive your family around in a big ass goofy looking hearse

I have a mid-90s Suburban Silverado with the 454 and four wheel drive and for what it's worth I absolutely love it! These rigs are definitely large though, and the gas mileage even in the newer Suburbans are pretty crap compared to the competition. They are so large they can be difficult to park in small parking lots, but they are incredibly comfortable with an absurd amount of room on the inside for both cargo and passengers.

I've removed the third row of seating in my Suburban and basically treat the vehicle as if it's a quad cab pickup with a canopy because I use the rear area for dry storage and transporting a lot of crap.

Oh and another thing, if you remove the third row seating you can camp in there without any problem. I'm 6' tall and I just laid down in the back and I could stretch all the way out. With a sleeping bag and a foam bad below me it was actually really comfortable too. The 4WD and 454 combination that mine has is great for doing some intermediate off roading as well.

TLDR:
Excellent rigs for hauling people, cargo, towing, going camping, cruising down the highway, and even going off road. Bad vehicles for driving around in big cities and in narrow streets, and horrible at fitting in small parking lots.

>Mine is on the right in the picture.

No man or woman WANTS to drive a fucking minivan, hence why crossovers were created. Driving a minivan is fucking demoralizing. Minivan's also don't have much storage room with the 3rd row up.
>>
>>14789454
The tundra is worst in segment. So an suv based on the tundra is also worst in segment. They get shit mpg because they use Toyota's ancient 5.7 v8.

You should buy a minivan. It's exactly what you need unless you also need to tow more 3000 pounds. Don't let your wife cuck you even more into getting something more expensive and less efficient for

You should probably think over what you actually need from a family vehicle and whether its economical to daily drive one. If you legitimately have more than 3 kids plus family and actually need the space offered by a large-sized SUV like the suburban, then I'd say it's okay.

Whats not okay is if your wife wants it for social status or "being safe on the road". Going on shopping sprees or taking 2 kids to soccer practice aren't valid excuses and if you rarely take more than 4/5 people at a time then you've wasted money on a gas guzzling land barge for no good reason.
>>
>>14790450
5 series starts at $50.2k, burban starts at $49.7k. They are basically the same price.

The only other reason would be if you need greater passenger capacity than your Silverado PLUS towing capacity on a regular basis.
Maybe you could try a Subaru Tribeca on her?

Gas is 10 memhet dickings per liter over here, we don't give a shit. We traded fuel economy for towing, seating, and cargo space.

There really aren't any better choices than a Suburban if you want Suburban space and Suburban towing capacity.

Get a LTZ with the Magnetic Ride Control (the same system GM licenses to Ferrari), it makes it super comfy and eliminates body roll and wallowing.

Plus it kneels to reduce step in or load height.
>>
>>14789399
look into picking up one of the 80s square body burbs in mint shape, toss in a gear vendors and you've got a perfect ride.

if you or she won't go for old then there's nothing wrong with a new burb, get a higher trim package, they're all over the place and reliable, comfy, spacious.

if she only just got a job and you guys don't have at least a third of the vehicles cost to drop down upfront then save some fucking money so you're not upside down in a year or two or three on a 20% lease trading it in because expensive.

Are you towing?

Are you going over rough terrian?

Do you like burning as much fuel as possible?

If you answered no to all 3, what you need is a MINIVAN. They're spacious, comfortable, luxurious, and well-equipped. And considering they are not exempt from gas guzzler tax, they do get good mileage. There are still players left in the minivan game. There's always the original (at least for the US) of Chrysler and their T&C or Dodge Grand Caravan. If FCA leaves a bad taste in your mouth, there's the Honda Odyssey. If you want an AWD option, Toyota's got your covered with the Sienna. There are also more.

If you're concerned with your kids, Minivans are frequently considered of the most safe vehicles on the road and have many systems to try to steer your dumb ass away from a collision, and if an accident is unavoidable, your best bet to survive one is in a minivan as airbags can pop out of everywhere, and bodies are designed to absorb crash energy and not deform into your kid's heads. Also, with being lower to the ground, Minivans can handle abrupt maneuvers better than SUV's and have less of a chance to roll.

Convenience equipment? Oh you know it. Most minivans come with all sorts of goodies. Things like automatically opening doors/liftgate, refrigerators (small but fridges nontheless), seats that can fold away without making everything high up. TV screens are also a common option, with newer models having more inputs.

"but I need to haul things around inside." THEN DO IT. Fold down the seats and hey, it's a cargo van with windows! "but SUV's have more truck space with the seats up." This isn't the 90's, stop thinking of short-wheelbase minivans, they don't even make those anymore.

Holy shit I'm closing in on maximum post size. Point is, SUV's are just for muh image, and even insurance rates reflect that (minivans are much cheaper to insure). You don't need the offroad or tow capability of an SUV as much as you tell yourself, it's just a waste.

I realized I fucked up my intro. Also as I read more I realized I had to change it to add more, and delete things that ran on for no reason. Consider that post a rough draft.

Holy shit, you scared me op, my parents were considering buying a suburban, with my mom pushing it more than my dad. I don't know what would be worse, finding out your parent goes on 4chan or finding out your kid goes on 4chan.

>we travel a lot and are looking for something comfortable for long drives
Consider this: Virtually any vehicle you get will be comfortable for you and your woman, the kids gotta learn to deal with whatever they get. One of the many things destroying America is kids being too comfortable, why strike out on your own when papa makes sure you and your half dozen other siblings each have their own reclining seat with climate control and entertainment center?

Pathfinder with 3rd row?
>>
>>14789399
My parents had one when I was a kid for road trips. They'd hook up the trailer and we'd travel over most of the western US by the time we stopped on family vacations. It was nice as it could carry quite a few people or stuff, or with just my family, parents got the front, sister got the middle with the one seat folded down and I took up the back seat. Cooler and snacks and the dog on the folded down 1/3 seat of the second row, pile of books in the rows to entertain ourselves and 2-3 days of driving to a destination would fly by.
It ended up being my DD for a while, I'd use it to haul lumber, drywall, mulch, dirt, loads to the dump, pull out trees, stumps, fenceposts, I could put a few friends in with the third seat out and carry bikes or skis or snowboards in the back and on top, or gear in the back and kayaks on top. Thing was brutal in the snow too, would climb iced up roads and plow through stuff that the honda passport my friend had (with snow tires to boot) would spin out in, and I just had the RWD one with basic all weather tires.
I wouldn't touch a new suburban after test driving one, it handled like it was trying to pretend to be a car, the price was astronomical and the leather interior made it something that lost the core of what it could do as a truck. I'd recommend a van honestly, even if you're going to tow something light. The suburbans are getting more carlike and losing their truck side, you'd be better off with something else if you dealt with more off the paved road stuff. I'd go with a Previa and get the AWD supercharged version. It'll haul your stuff and your kids fine, unless you need the newest vehicle around.

Suburban is bretty cool guy. Huge fuel tank and more cargo capacity/tow capacity/ than anything else made. Its still a proper suv not a crossover. Not keen on the current modelsnwith all the luxury bs but all new cars jave too much stuff like that in them imo.

The Suburban is available with 8, and has significant cargo room without having to fold the back 3.

Perennial segment loser. GM has a 70% market share in full size BOF, because they have lower cost of ownership, higher resale, and better performance.

Late 90's I would guess by the look of it.
Pretty good generation for them, not too car like but not too old truck like, can be enjoyed by most people.

new explorer is legit. seriously the only complaint is from people who say its unwieldy cause they are women who cant drive.

To go against /o/ and not meme on you:

The good: Keep up with the fluds and oil changes and the Chrysler engines in that gen and the one after it (3.3 and larger V6s) will run forever, mine was at 350k and still going strong. The Mitsubishi engines are generally worse for wear and harder to work on. The 3.3 is peppier than you'd expect for a soccer mom van, lots of space inside even without the stow-and-go seats, the rear hatch opens wayyyyy up and the bumper is way down low so it's easy to get shit in and out, AWD is an option if you want that for some reason. Always go for the long wheelbase variants. Interior is cozy but roomy, delicious column shift and buttons and knobs, no infotainment shit or Japanese backwards window switches here. Seats aren't pretty but lay totally flat so you can sleep on 'em if you don't want to just use the middle row.

The bad: The transmissions are made of glass and will either last forever or explode at 100k every time. Exhaust will rip off immediately. Window motors go bad and if they don't die entirely, will lead to windows taking two minutes to just go up or down.

The very bad: Third gens like that will rust like a fucking Datsun if you live in a salt state. There's also a really awful design flaw where rain gets funneled into the engine bay and collects on top of the front strut towers until they completely rust out and your front struts come through the hood. That was kind of fixed on the fourth gen but for third gens they give you a plate to mount on top of the tower and tell you good luck. The side door channels can also collect water and rust. The underside between the rear wheels acts like a big cup to hold water and will rust. Did I mention they rust?
