Honestly I just bought one and can't say I'm disappointed paid 9000 with rebates for a car that I can pretty much use strictly for driving to and from work and long distance. I got what I paid for. It's small. Cheap. But extremely efficient on fuel and low parts cost in the long run.
I've seen a few and driven one. People in the sf bay area buy them because mpg and FOBs who only buy new cars but only the cheapest ones available (and never do any maintenance). There's a lot if Mirages that are only a year old and already coated in dents and scratches. I remember when Versas were the cheapest around 2013 and by now the attrition rate has relegated most of those to the wrecking yard.
I swear it's the cheapest car syndrome. When you see one you just know odds are 75% that the owner is the worst driver alive and doesn't give half a shit about running you off the road.
As for the car itself, very much a throwback to the mid-late 90s shitbox in the worst ways possible. Cars that genuinely struggle to catch up with interstate traffic have not been seen on dealer lots for at least 20 years but here we go! Something actually slower than a Smart car! Mileage is nice but not that impressive, a car that doesn't have to try so hard just to keep up will do better in most hands, though if you don't mind joining the Prius drivers by being "that fuckhead" who drives 5-10mph under the speed limit everywhere you might actually see the EPA specs. Or you can spend another ~1k and get an exponentially better car, or even 5-4k less on an awesome used one. The Mirage is way on the shit end of the price/value curve. Don't get me wrong, plenty of cheap and cheerful cars exist, but this isn't one of them. It's just cheap. Even the Versa (soulless bucket of plastic) was better.

I remember at the la auto show I was looking at the fiesta st. Some Arab fool comes up looks at the 19000 msrp and says "no good." I made the mistake of acknowledging him and he proceeds to show me his mirage brochure. I mention that one is 3 cyl and the other is a turbo 4. It has twice the power for fucks sake. The back end is gorgeous. Very nicely proportioned and just a little aggression in the lines. That color is not my thing, but it certainly looks good in pink.
The front end on the other hand, looks like it's missing an Evo mask it's supposed to have. That big bland bumper and tiny grilles are proportionally fucked. I wanna cut holes in it and fix mesh to them because racecar.
The roofline and rear quarters look like they're off a Versa.
as with other economy cars, the wheel/body proportions are ugly but being a small bubbly hatchback it doesn't suffer from it like the fastback design of the Prius.

The price was right. The color not so much but I'm averaging 47 mpg at 65mph for my hour commute to and from work. Filled up the whole gas tank for 13 bucks

I work at a mitsu dealership and this was the least sold color on that car, we didn't even sell that many of these mirages, but after the facelift hit, we already sold 6 of those. The colours are much much better now, not this watered down shit paint. Now they got very powerful and vibrant colours.
They look way, way, way better now.
