No one on this board has a degree in anything related to autmotive function or design. Not a single engineer on this board, confirmed fact. The only people with any semblance of training are the mechanics/techs who lurk here, and even then they're half-assed half-wits like heartbreaker. The rest are just benchracers, autistic teenager animu faggots, or wannabe redneck tryhards who changed their own oil when they were 16 and think they've been hot shit ever since.

This place is a cesspool of retardation and misinformation. Only a fool would take anything posted here as truth.

I'm wondering if it's possible/worth rebuilding. The intake turbine looks like it's in it's own pressfit casing, the shaft looks quite damaged, and well, the walls of the oil jacket are kaput.
Might go well with a cheap miata sometime in the future provided I learn more.
>>

>>
>>14786470

The compressor cover should remove to expose the compressor wheel. Garrett is either bolts with retainers, bolts around circumference. Holset, KKK, older Air Research use a large circlip to retain the compressor housing.

I don't think the oil supply will be damaged though the surface of the shaft bearings may be extensively damaged. Remove the thrust plate and remove the circlips retaining the bearings to access them.

What breed is the turbocharger?
>>
>>14786521

I'm sorry, I did not see the logo clearly on the compressor housing. It is a KKK. Kinugawa and Mamba are the same foundry in China with parts from Taiwan that have cheap rebuild kits, compressor wheels and turbine wheel / shaft assemblies for KKK units. They may have one to suit this turbocharger.

I have used only one Kinugawa rebuild kit for Holset HX40W for a cash strapped vessel owner on a Cummins 6BTA. It is still a turbocharger some thousand hours later.

Good luck with your rebuild.
>>
>>14786541Saved.
thank you very much, sir. Will definetly look into it after I finish fooling around with the current issue of having almost a gallon of oil dumped into the intake. I've been making a point of driving it all week, so the oil in the catalytic converter if slowly burning up. So far intuition tells me I should clean out the tb, new sparkplugs, maybe run some seafoam?
I'll check the intercooler and anything I can easily access downstream of the turbo, as there was a concerning coating of metal shavings/powder suspended in oil on the intake hose leading to the throttle body.
>>
>>14786576

I suspect looking at the compressor wheel (which looks like a 12-blade K04 turbine wheel in the photos? I have never seen such a thing, unless that's a 6+6 in VERY bad shape) you will have particulates through the intake tract. You must remove the intake tract and thoroughly clean it, including the tract aft of the throttle body.

These shavings are the largest concern here. The issues that arise are; degradation of the seal between the intake valve and the valve seat, degradation of the seal between the exhaust valve and valve seat, degradation of the seal between the piston ring and cylinder bore and potential blocking of the lubrication system.

You must change the lube oil and clean the intake tract. Hopefully you have not done any damage to the internal components of the engine. If not, then removing all lube oil and particulates from the intake tract and reconditioning the turbocharger may be all you need.

Does the engine knock, tap or otherwise make a sound it did not before the turbocharger let go?
>>
>>14786623
KO3.
Nope. Everything sounds good with new turbo, don't think any large particulate made it past the intercooler. I checked the little oil that made it out of the oil pan, and it didn't have any shavings in it. added more oil, changed it again last night. No metal particles.. It's all very fine and trapped in the oily coating around the inside of the hose. Haven't taken the intercooler out yet, but I wouldn't be surprised to find it acting as some kind of baffle for a decent amount of oil. No weird idle, sound, or loss of power.

I've only watched 2-3 of his videos but I remember everything he said was either flat wrong, partially incorrect or was subjective opinions labeled as fact. The one he did on why you shouldn't coast in neutral was a great example, all his arguments were basically "W-well it's illegal! M-maybe, depends on your state." With not a single actual engineering reason why you shouldn't like that it might cause excess wear or something.
>>
To be honest I generally find his videos pretty good, though some have been slightly off with facts, but then he will often address the issue in the next video.

Really cool guy though and the drawings are good for getting the point across to a broader range of viewers.

Awesome man, well it looks like you got off pretty lightly. Drop the cooler like you plan as I too think you will find lube oil pooling in there.

Perhaps now is a good time to see if the cheaper foundries have an affordable billet compressor wheel for your turbocharger? You could cheaply build this turbocharger and install it at a later date for fun. Good on you for doing it yourself.

It looks like he recorded himself explaining things, in order to train or something and then decided to upload it for keks (or for extra cringe). But the uploading bit seems to have been an afterthought in his earlier vids, and people simply liked the way he explained things so he went on doing this vids, now with the purpose of uploading them. His recent vids are pretty decent I guess (btw I'm studying mechanical and electrical engineering).

>>14787689 You're a legend man. Thanks for the info.
I looked at the chinese stuff at work today. It's really tempting, and will look into it a bit more this weekend. I got the turbo I installed last weekend through father in law, same K03 but from an A4. Dropped it right in and it fit without much swearing.
What could I use to attempt to clean the intercooler? I'm thinking some kind of solvent that won't damage the aluminum, or might use two or three cans of maf cleaner.
Since the oil burned off the exhaust I won't be driving it any more, no point in risking it.
>actual discussion about wrenching on /o/
I'm running numbers and overall, I think I spent more than i would have taking it in, considering the cost of tools and other things.
>>14787749
No, but the oil pan holds about 3 quarts and the oil filter close to another. After it blew, I pulled over immediately, shut it off, checked all fluids and the dipstick was below any reading. When changing the oil later I only got about 500~750 mL out of the oil pan. One of the few early 2000's 1.8t with good oil pressure... and it blows.

Grab a bottle of degreasing concentrate. Seal one end of the aftercooler with tape or a plug and fill the aftercooler with the correct concentrate / water solution. Get some mechanical action going by shaking and swirling the aftercooler for five minutes then drain. Follow with carburettor cleaner without either end sealed and this should remove dirt or oil in the unit without damage.

>is just wasting fuel
How?
>>
>>14785325
I hate this faggot's voice and shitty Justin Bieber-tier faggot haircut.
>>
>>14790203
When you coast in gear (overrun) the momentum of the vehicle is driving the engine via the drivetrain and the fuel injectors shut off to save a small amount of fuel. If you coast in neutral the engine is idling and has to use fuel to keep it going.
>>
>>14790240
But you're also fighting parasitic drag if you coast while in gear. The fuel used at idle is insignificant compared to how much you'd use getting back up to speed if the hill wasn't steep enough.
>>
>>14785429
Apprentice BMW tech here senpai. What about you?
>>
>>14790276
Not sure what you mean. It's more for if you're braking anyway, say for a bend or stoplight, and trying to kill speed. If the car is driving the engine there's no need to be burning fuel too. Yea it's ultimately insignificant amounts of fuel, but it's there.
