What do you think /o/ thinks about it?

I have one OP. /o/ is going to hate on it. I like mine just fine and its somewhat fun to drive. Its an alright car, but there is defiantly better choices out there.

It’s overrated – Hyundai hasn’t figured out fun cars yet. Heck, I don’t think there’s a single thing that it does particularly well. Mazda does slow but fun, VW does nice and quiet but only marginally exciting, Honda splits the difference, and so does Ford except without the reliability.

The Veloster is unremarkable but surely it isn't slower than the Tiburon.

Can't go to a gas station without middle-aged men and women alike walking up to you to ask about it. Perhaps because I'm in a small town.

Love mine. Could be faster but so could lots of cars. MPG average of 33 right now mixed driving. Could be higher but so could lots of cars.
>>

At least Tiburons were available with a V6 that sounded nice and a 2.0 four banger that took boost reasonably well.

that car meets the bare fucking minimum requirements of basically having an engine with a manual transmission. Other than that they don't seem like the most fun cars, especially in comparison to it's direct competition (370z, Boostang, Mustang GT, yada yada).

I think in general Hyundai (and Hyundai owners) really like the visual aesthetics of their cars, and are willing to compromise on the performance aspects.

It's a Korean car that's faster than 99.9% of the shitboxes driven here so naturally it's hated.

>>14778508
What the fuck are you on about, even the turbo version has lagg and when you're on it you're like wow it's no faster than a corolla
>>
>>14775988
My mum has one and i've driven it a few times in short bursts.

It's full of features that normies want, on release it looked really fresh and it was quite cheap.

Personally i think the doors are too hard to open - the demogarphic that tends to own these sit real close to the wheel and with the size of the door and the placement of the handle the whole thing more effort than it should be.

The seats are too hard and unsupportive.

Shitty hard plastic everywhere.

Transmission is pretty horrible.

Visibility is utter shit.

All that being said id totally grab one on the cheap, smack an engine in the rear and chuck it through some scrub.
>>
>>14778508
The n/a veloster is slower than 90's honda shitboxes. The turbo isn't that fast either
>>
>>14778577
I hadn't really ever considered it, but the Veloster would be far better off with an MR configuration.
>>
>>14778585
>>14778553

>>
>>14778954
Veloster turbo 0-60 is 6.8 seconds. 90's civic with an air intake 0-60 is 6.5.
Veloster weighs 2800lbs. 90's civic weighs 2300lbs.
The hyundai is literally worse than a 90's civic in every single way including reliability.

>>
>>14779189
I don't think that really applies to most hatchbacks, I think the Veloster could fill an interesting niche with it's design, rear wheel drive, and relative light weight as an entry level MR. A lot of it's problems would be forgiven.

>Genesis Coupe
>meets the bare fucking minimum requirements of basically having an engine with a manual transmission

This is complete horseshit. Gen Coupe is a decent option.
>>
>>14781360
Sure it's decent, but it has terrible steering feel and a vague/mushy 6MT gear box. Other than the engine which can hold decent power, it doesn't really excel at anything, especially turning.

It's a decent option, like the Veloster, but probably the 4th or 5th best option in it's class/price range.
>>
>>14781511
The 3 or 4 alternatives you're about to call "better" are also more expensive than the Genesis. Same with the Veloster.
>>
>>14781535
Genesis Coupe starts around $27k, Veloster at $18k.

You could get an Ecoboost Mustang for less and run 10s in the 1/4 miles.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=87ZnKayZ7pI

Or get a Fiesta ST or Focus ST for the same price as a Veloster.
>>
>>14781511
>doesn't really excel at anything, especially turning
Umm. Are you the same guy who included Mustangs in the list of superior cars?
>>
>>14781579
Mustangs with the independent rear suspension, can, in fact, take a turn now. I wasn't talking about solid rear axle Mustangs.
>>
>>14781511
>4th or 5th best option in it's class/price range
I would argue that Nissan Z is the most reasonable comparison. Mustangs are just a different kind of car, not to mention, the GT is way more expensive.
>>
>>14781585
>independent rear suspension
I'm well aware of this. Genesis Coupe still handles better. Reaches 60 faster than EcoBoost.
>>
>>14781590
I guess the coupe only comes with the 3.8 now, no more 2.0t Genesis coupes, but if you add any options they are immediately sitting around $30k. That's definitely base model GT range, and more than a premium Ecoboost Mustang.

There's a reason they call these things gook mustangs, isn't there?
>>
>>14781607
>if you add any options
Moving the goalposts...

>sitting around $30k
Still roughly $3k less than base GT

You have to move up to "Ultimate" trim to enter Mustang GT price range.
>>
>>14781590
The Z is a jack of all trades that does everything reasonably well, the Veloster is a half-assed compromise made for vaping 16 year olds that does nothing well.

The Genesis is different in this regard, it's not inherently a bad car like the Veloster but it's just outclassed by its competition.

Ecoboost handles quite well actually, especially with the perf package.
>>
>>14781781
I'm not saying it doesn't. Just not as good as the Gen Coupe. Track times posted earlier are misleading, as there are more things than handling which factor in to track performance.
>>
>>14781798
Another huge advantage with Ford is you get Cobb support, which is pretty amazing for tuning your vehicle in 2016.

The Genesis Coupe is Hyundai's best sporty car effort to date, for sure. They just need to nail the gearbox and the steering feel/feedback and they'll have a solid platform to compete with the Zs going forward.
>>
>>14781834
Wow. A reasonable response! Hah...

>Cobb support
Yup. I hear it turns FiST into a little monster.

>They just need to nail the gearbox
Not gonna argue with this. Pretty much every review complains about it.

Anyways, I don't know why people think I'm some Hyundai shill, or that I hate Fords. I just believe that Mustangs are a different kind of car and shouldn't be compared to the Gen Coupe.
>>
>>14781656
They copy shit from other manufacturers instead of doing their own research and development, so they're always a generation or two behind.

They look good on paper, but in the real world they're always inferior to their competitors because of this.

Drove one, visibility was the most jarring part. Expected it to be slow, expected bad plastics inside. The door handle is only attached to one end and feels like itll eventually pull off moving the door over the years.

"Rhys Millen drove a version of Veloster race car with a 2-litre engine rated 500 hp with all wheel drive in the Summer X Games during 2011 US Rallycross Championship Series.[32][33] The partnership between Rhys Millen Racing and Hyundai Motor America continued for 2012 Global RallyCross Championship season.[34] After Hyundai had announced it would no longer participate in North American motorsports, the 2011 Hyundai Veloster Global RallyCross race cars went on sale starting January 1, 2013"

"The Hyundai i20 WRC is a World Rally Car built by Hyundai for use in the 2014 World Rally Championship.[23] It is based on the i20, and was unveiled at the 2012 Paris Motor Show, marking Hyundai's return to the WRC after a ten-year absence.[24] The car will be operated by Hyundai's performance division, Hyundai Motorsport from a base in Frankfurt, Germany.[25]"

This.

The Genesis is bland as fuck... also, they're not well known for ANYTHING. They just simply exist.

They have no awards nor are they famous on anything.
You know what would make em 'famous'? A sportscar, lets say V6 Twin-Turbo that is very, very sweet and can beat the BMW M3/M4 and the C63AMG while not going to cost a fortune to buy and maintain.

Now, THAT is going to be an achievement and Hyundai will be known for THAT.

Basically, Hyundai needs to develop something that can rival other companies. I mean, no other auto companies fear Hyundai. In business, if a company has no rivalry, it is doomed to fail.

This x 1000

Gay fag shit. Whant a real drivers car?..buy any Type-R
>>
>>14783734
That rumored twin-turbo Genesis Coupe successor seems pretty promising.
>>
>>14783734
All I can say about the genesis is it looks decent form the rear and the exhaust note is sexy as fuck.

And the coupe is not $40k, either.
>>
>>14775988
I actually like the proportions of it. Same with the CR-Z

Too bad both are shit cars.
>>
Like the Tiburon its a shitty car that looks faster than it could ever be.
>>
>>14783893
The Genesis sedan is the only one even beginning to talk about though.

The Genesis Coupe has always gotten okay reviews at best, I can't really imagine why'd someone would pick it over something like a ecoboost Mustang in one direction or a toyobaru in the other if they wanted a sporty coupe for the same price.

Horrendous, shitty speed, mi familia.
And they break down easily.

t. My mom used to own a Kia. Don't ask why.
>>
Before I bought my FiST I tested the veloster turbo, works mini, and a 500 abarth (as well as many others not quite in the same category.

The only reasons someone would buy a veloster turbo over a fiesta st are:
-they like the looks/brand
-they didn't test drive anything else
>>
own a green veloster plus. pretty great fuel economy around town, despite small size has good storage space, sunroof, leather interior with great for the price electronics/tech and unique look that gets a decent amount of looks and comments. take off/response is pretty bad, paddle shifters are pretty useless but overall not a bad car.
>>
>>14786809
Or they read Consumer Reports and saw how many electronic and drivetrain issues the Ford seems to have.
>>
>>14786809
Ford shill pls go.
>>
The Veloster isn't a car anyone wants. Rather, it's a car they try to justify.

It's the official car of the impulsive, easily-persuaded early-20s "car enthusiast" who goes to the dealership with no credit history expecting to drive off the lot in a WRX STI, only to find they don't have any performance cars there, and gets lured into this shitbox by the salesman who knows jack shit about cars.

Then, when they post photos on facebook of them slav-squatting next to it and selfies of them vaping in the driver's seat, everyone proceeds to tell them what a shit car it is, and the owner starts trying to spew out justifications.

>b-but it's a six-speed
>I'm just using it to build credit
>it's actually kinda quick guys
>m-muh MPGs
>>
>>14787625
>this much projecting

Nobody's capable of just liking the car for what it is? Really? We live in a world where people are buying $9k Mirages and enjoying them.
>>
>>14787889
I'm simply speaking from experience. I've literally seen exactly what I described happen with three different people I know.

For the price of a new Veloster, you might as well get a 2014 FR-S
>>
>>14787889
The Mirage doesn't pretend to be something it isn't. The Veloster is a Accent/Forte with a ridiculous bodykit and half-assed suspension that doesn't actually let you put the power down where it matters. They suffer from wheel hop and poor handling while also looking hideous and striking the image of a hot hatch when it's about as hot as 3-day-old kimchi.

It's simply a bad car. There are plenty of other C-seg econoboxes that look better, handle better and are better-engineered. If all someone wants is a brappy engine and turbo noises, they might as well get a 1.4T Dart or Sonic and slap a dose pipe in there. Those cars may only have ~160 HP but they'll both leave a Veloster in the dust because it all gets to the ground.
>>
>>14788071
The Dart is actually a halfway decent car, too. Sure, it's slow as shit, but the front end looks amazing, and some of the colors look great with the black wheels. Not to mention that optional Alpine audio. The Dart is a major win for Dodge.

It's the perfect car for people who only pretend to care about performance, but really do care about everything else on the car. I'd say it's probably one of the best economy cars available at the moment.
>>
>>14788071
I just don't understand. The Veloster has never pretended to be anything its not. Its always been an economy car with a weird as fuck 3door setup. Veloster has always been about style first and foremost. And in a sea of Mirages and Darts, it certainly stands out. In truth it has always been casuals like /o/ that have looked at it and forced a "sport" moniker on it.

There are millions of people that don't care about winning red light races, that want a small hatch with great fuel economy and non-derivative styling. For those attributes its pretty much the CRZ and the Veloster. The latter is faster, lighter, has more interior room, and better visibility.
>>
>>14788173
There are literally 10 cars ahead of the Dart that are all better choices that I can name off the top of my head, all for various reasons ranging from better drivetrains to better overall reliability.
>>
>>14788656
Actually, the dealerships where they're being sold have forced a "sport" moniker on them.

>Go to local "variety" dealership because I remembered seeing some Challengers and Corvettes over there
>Walk in, tell salesman I'm looking to buy
>Mention that manual transmission is a must
>First car he tries to dump on me is a MINI
>Say that I'd like to look at some of the quicker cars on the lot
>This fucker takes me straight to the goddamn Veloster
>"Oh yeah, this is badass car right here"
>Flat-out tell him I want to go look at the 'Vettes and Challengers
>"Man, you'd have to get a co-signer. And are you sure you could afford the insurance?"
>Never even asked about credit, or how I was trying to pay
>Doesn't realize I brought cash; assumes I'm some poor faggot trying to finance his dream car with no credit
>Tell him his wife said she'd only fuck me if I drove a sports car
>Leave, buy from a private party instead.
>>
>>14788952
Uninformed salesmen from shady "variety" lots....

Basically /o/ in a nutshell.

>literally 0 TSBs for the FiestaST drivetrain
Yeah some people bought it as their first "performance car, blew the clutch in the first 400 miles, and didn't know what they had done so they screamed "much tranny"
>>14787180
>maybe he did a years worth of research and wants to share his findings with other anons =\= shilling
>>
>>14775988
I can't speak for the manual, but the transmission on the automatic is dog shit. Every single Veloster Iv driven shifted rough and when you backed up it would vibrate like you were lugging the engine.

On the other side, Hyundai Sonata's have surprised the fuck out of me and Hyundai Genesis are so fucking nice on the inside and ride so smooth. I valet, so I see a LOT of cars. I drive sometimes 30-40 a day, most of them being rentals, but some cars I thought would be shit Iv really liked and some cars I thought I would like have been shit.

I don't think there is a car that upsets people more than the Veloster on /o/.

Literally everyone is asspained by a Korean hatchback designed to look like a Pokemon.
