I just got a 1989 Mercedes-Benz 560SEL. I plan on doing some body work and a tune up making it all spiffy again.

I saw that there was an AMG version of this car and it looks absolutely amazing. I personally don't care about the TV and what not, but the body kit really does interest me. I may get some BBS mesh wheels to complete the look.

Opinions? Suggestions? Pic related is the car.

Mercedes Benz General, I guess?

Wow OP you must be wealthy because Mercedes are expensive. I am impressed when I see you ride by me.
>>
If it's not an AMG, don't try to put shit on it to seem like one. They're worth more mint and original. And differently nice and interesting in their own right.
>>
>>14767662

Very funny, I'm broke as hell and just needed a car because riding around on a motorcycle doesn't really work out in the cold or rain. I traded one of my project bikes for it with 200 bucks and got it. It shifts hard, is missing the front right turn signal, and overheats did to a fucked water pump.

>>14767672

Yeah, I kind of figured that. Its no problem by me. I am very tempted by those BBS wheels though..
>>
>>14767662
Yes, because we're all teenage girls trying to impress others with material things.

Or maybe, just maybe, I chose a car because I liked it and didn't give a shit about what anybody else thought.

Rebuild kit is only $200 and they are easy to service.

pretty much all of them went to eastern europ-
>photo was taken there

not big surprise
>>
>>14767693
Why on earth would you buy that if you are broke?
>>
w201 190e vs w124 200/230e, manual transmission :

I'm looking for the most economical of them, i'm OK with the smaller size of the w201. My main concern is the fuel consumption, i don't want less than 9km/L. Will be doing 60km everyday to work at 90km/h outside the city, so i'm looking for a comfy dd.

Last car was a e30 320i, i was happy with it but the price are now too high to buy another one.

The merc will be in competition with a e34 320/5i.

How strong is the V8?

It was the first offer for my 1982 Honda Sabre V45 that needed to be reassembled. It was either this Benz, or 1972 Yamaha CS5 with a broken kickstarter gear. Again, I'm broke as hell. I got the Sabre for free and just didn't feel like completing it, so I listed it on Craigslist and several days later some guy from Connecticut hit me up wanting to trade that Mercedes-Benz for my bike. I was totally fine with getting rid of that Sabre and got a car out of it.

I'm currently training to be a mechanic and do a lot of motorcycle work on my own. I'm trying to get my VFR to the track this summer, but before I do that, I need a car to get me from A to B. The 5.5 in the 560SEL isn't a bad engine at all, its everything else around it. I was hoping to get a truck, but this is pretty cool too!

>>14768087

I may not even need a rebuild kit, just the Transmission Vacuum Modulator and the rest of the vacuum lines checked out.

This whole car isn't even in bad shape, surprisingly. It was owned by an old lady who just left it parked most of the time. Just needs some TLC. I'll probably get rid of it next year for something else. There are many cars to drive in the world and this is one of many. Might as well fix it up and have fun while I can, right?
>>
>>14768197
Power? Or reliability? Pretty strong either way, if you account for age.
>>
>>14768197

Seems pretty strong to me! Headgaskets don't seem to have leaks or anything, turns over fine and honestly is just old. I think it has like 146,000 miles? Not too bad for the old Mercedes-Benz V8s.

They're pretty good! It's usually not the engine that kills these cars. It's the trans or little things.

>>14767693
>car barely runs
>but at least it looks nice

Kek. Enjoy your almost 30 year old turd of a shitbox.
>>
>>14768197
The 4.2 liters make 202 with good spark plugs and fuel injectors. I believe the 5.6 makes close to 300 but I'm not too suuuuuuure
>>
>>14768420
I bought a 300 se for 2500 and put like a thousand into it. I did all my own work and it runs like a dream.
>>
>>14768433
272 horse power actually.
>>
>>14768420

I will! Or at least try to! I wasn't expecting to get much in exchange for a pile or parts! I can get parts for cheaper than most so I'm too worried about it. It just needs to work for now. I'll get rid of it eventually.

I'm trying to get a third gen Camaro or Post-Facelift Foxbody Mustang or SVO next. Once I get some garage space (fucking NYC, man. everything is so expensive) I'll get an idiot proof daily. Maybe an old 80s Corolla or something. I have time to figure that out.

>>14768507

I feel the last really good cars they made were the W124-era cars. The 90s on were truly something else, the styling just kept on getting worse.

Nowadays, they're barf worthy. The engines are cool, but everything else is... yuck. Especially nowdays, every single car of theirs looks exactly the same!

1994 C180 Esprit (W202) manuel, fuel (not a diesel). I love it, on 290.000 km now. Still going strong. It rides very stable and comfy, especially on the highway with 130 km/h. Easy to drive, not underpowered either. Bought it for 950 euro's.
>>
>>14768991
>manuel Mercedes

Thats like one of the few cars you dont buy manuel.
>>
>>14768074
Fuck yes i want one so bad.
If you understand even a little bit russian i suggest watching the w140 S600 test drive by smotra
>>
>>14769011

Why not? Most the european Benzes are manual. Also a manual is more reliable then an automatic gearbox.

Fuck I want one so bad too, how is the reliability/running costs?
>>
>>14770513
The most infamous issue is the wiring harness, most W140's came with a biodegradable harness that likes to shed its insulation and generate shorts like a motherfucker. It's goddamn expensive to replace, but most surviving cars should've had it fixed already. Make sure to check though

Hi OP I want to buy a 560SEL for around 1500$ for the exact same reason as you.
I've got a few questions, how much do you spend on gas for mostly highway route a week?
It's a 1987 with over 200k KM original owner all maintenance done, 2 year old timing chain still in good shape, the bads about it is that it leaks (maybe from oil pan? valve guide seals? fuck knows) that I intend to fix later on. it doesn't leak much just need to add oil every month.
thanks.
>>
>>14771910

I just got this car, so I haven't driven it that much.

However, I can tell you that I can get 308 (13 city mpg average) to like 400 (18 highway mpg ) something miles out of the tank. So like 350 miles on average?

It has a 24 gallon tank and Premium is on average $2.50, so that should be 60 bucks a tank.

It's a gas hog. The one you're looking at doesn't sound too bad. I say go for it, Technically, I'm at 238k, I'm hoping for a couple of tens of thousands more!
>>
>>14772037
I'm just doing barely 50 km a day
thanks for the info

Have a 1984 190E 2.3, recently the foglights seem to just stop working every so often. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't. Replacing the fuse works sometimes, and other times it doesn't. They work when they want to. Any idea what this might be?
>>
>>14772876

Bad connection or short to ground somewhere. Try following the lines of your harness and see if they have any tears or are loose or corroded.

every panel looks misaligned and the rims tell me the former owner was a basketball american.

I hope you know how to do work yourself since this pretty much looks like a picture perfect money pit.
