EVERYTHING in Japan has its own kawaii mascot character. Prefectures (pictured), electric companies, sports teams, public awareness campaigns—everyone has one, and most aren't NEET-pandering (although Toyota's crosses the line).

But with moe-anthro characters? People still don't know what a double-wishbone suspension is, but that doesn't matter anymore—double-wishbone suspension is someone's waifu, and they know Prius has it. And every previously unmarketable engineering advance (and non-advance) can now be turned directly into waifu, with a catchy tune to help you keep 'em all straight.
TL;DR waifu are a universal language that can explain cars to people who know nothing about cars, which is important because the majority of people who buy cars are no-nothings.
