My dad likes to build RC airplanes. 90% of people that mess around with them just buy and fly. I think he's like you though, he spends a lot of money and time building and painting them. Then he flies it once and once he knows it works, he just hangs it up in the garage. I think we have like a hundred there, and he's only been in the hobby for a couple of years.

Yeah its a disease man. I quite literally built the whole front of this car from the ground up because it was a in a wreck. I'm talking, welded in new frame, tubing, bumper supports, radiator mounts, etc. Then I took apart the wiring harness and removed unused wires. I spent so much time with this car I knew it inside and out, and driving it bored me.

Like you OP, I really like buying used shitboxes because the "build" phase is the most exciting time. The car is still fresh, you don't quite trust it yet, but with each passing repair you start to bond with the machine and you learn what makes it tick, what the engineers were thinking, and slowly, how to trust it. You start to learn what cars you like working on, what cars suck ass to do even oil changes on, and all the little tricks that come with each car to speed things up on jobs.

And once the last project/repair/fix is all buttoned up and there's nothing left to do but drive it, you realize that all you wanna do is wrench all day and feel like you really did something. IDC what car it is, whether it's a get-me-by shitheap or the car that ultimately becomes your daily car, the joy of simply turning the wrenches cannot be ignored.

Goddamn I miss that raggedy pile of pissed off v6. That was 3 years ago. I now have another 94 truck with some parts stolen off that one but it's got a 5.3l in it now and I don't do stupid shit like that anymore.
