-A 200-300 mile range doesn't make it practical for my life, come back and talk to me when we get to 500 miles

-I don't like the interior of any Tesla so far produced

-No charging infrastructure in North Carolina to speak of

-Have no need for one

I'll reserve completing shit canning the interior on the Model 3 till I see one in person, but I expect to be disappointed. The interior quality on the sedan is waaaaaaay below the price point of the car

There has to be a charging station in Raleigh, our liberal hipster capital.

I see so many Teslas around the area. Where dafuq are they charging them?
>>
it really hinges on if it looks good and the performance of the base model
>>
>>14747240
I've seen 3 Teslas over here in Asheville and Boone.

I don't know how the fuck they can stand it.
>>
>>14747273
>>14747297

To be fair, I have seen a few in Raleigh. Shit one of the public pools my wife used to lifeguard at had a couple.

And I have seen a few on the UNC main campus in Chapel Hill

But in so far as the owners I have talked to, they all charge them at home, because they never have to drive them farther than the factory range on one charge. I can't even imagine using one of those things in Boone....
>>
>>14747240
I respect your opinion, but there are rumors of options exceeding 300 miles, which is not far off from my own sedan, and there are the usual charging solutions around your state and of course at your home. Even if it's not cost effective yet it is still intriguing.
>>
>>14747315
My Mother/Father in law have a farm in Boone that I have to visit somewhat on the regular, and that's about 180 miles one way, so that trip is what I always use as a measuring stick with electric cars.

If I could get there and back comfortably on one charge, I would consider it 'practical' for me and my lifestyle. Granted I know I could always set up a charger at home (which is what at the owners I have ever talked to did).

If the Model 3 could produce an option with a ~350 mile range, I would at the very least give it due consideration. Again, the interior just hasn't ever done it for me (And again, that's a personal tick more than anything else), but god damn you can't get around the performance.
>>
Really want an EV and the Model 3's price point and tax credit makes it really attractive, but range anxiety and uncertainty whether or not the next time I move I'll even have a garage to charge in gets the better of me.

Also, kind-of curious what kind of range a 2012 Model S gets after 4 years of regular charging.

I like that Tesla, despite being an Electric car Manufacturer and a kind-of meme'y one at that. they make their cars relatively normal looking and not all "tron-legacy" looking like some other EV cars (cough bmw I8 and I3 cough)

That's all i ever wanted from Electric cars was an Electric car that just looks normal and not like something out of a futuristic cartoon. i hope to god they stay this way in their designs.
>>
>>14747338
Do your mother and father in law not have electricity at their farm? I don't want to convince you of a Tesla, I'm just asking why you consider it an argument.
>>
>>14747457
the model S was that but the model X front fascia is going in the wrong direction, it's too minimalist and weird
>>
>>14747536
The S's faux grille was one of the few things that turned me off about them, but then the X came out and made me realize the alternative can look way worse.

It'll be a real problem going forward for EVs. Closely mimic fossil fuel cars or let form follow function and risk looking weird?

I don't feel that a Tesla is a car you own, as much as rent.

It's too similar to current phones and software in that way. If they open-sourced their software, I'd consider it.

>>
>>14747415
A basic requirement for a GT car is to be able to travel long distances, something Tesla is struggling with.

They can only make glorified commuters.
>>
>>14747240
This. It's an awesome vehicle but if you drive heavily every day it's not a viable option. The E-class, A6 and 5 series (soon the S90 & Continental too) have far nicer interiors at a lower price point too.

I understand that some like the clean simple interior design of the Model S but despite their strong sales they're missing out on the large conservative traditional luxury buyer segment who find it overly sterile to the point that it's boring.

I feel like I'm just sitting in a moving Ikea furnished apartment sitting in one, though the build quality is definitely better than Ikea. My dad was looking into a 70D, but is leaning towards an E300 because of the interior.

One thing worth considering is that the long-term costs of an EV are much lower than a regular car because of far fewer moving parts and the much lower price of grid power compared to gas.

No, you can't. Part of "affording a car" is being able to afford the maintenance and/or having the means to properly maintain it. For electric cars, that means having the ability to charge it securely. Can't charge it securely? Then you can't afford it.

>Buying first generation of anything
>Ever

I like my cars when they don't spend a quarter of their life in the shop thanks. Even as someone who firmly believes that electric cars are in fact the future, I have zero intention of buying a Model 3 anytime soon.

The first generation or two of anything like this is going to be filled with engineering issues. That's just how things are in the real world. Now, add on the ridiculous backlog as they ramp up production (I don't think they've even shipped a single X outside of showroom models to Europe yet). Couple this with the fact that Tesla as a company couldn't keep to a deadline if held every employee at gunpoint, and you are looking at 2019-2020 before the car is actually both possible and worth buying compared to any number of other econo cars.

When my current vehicle finally dies, I might consider it, but it's not going to be anytime soon.
>>
>>14752364
It's not gonna come out on time.

All of Elon's timetable promises have been tempered with
>if the gigafactory is fully operational,
and they are missing milestones on that project.

I predict the Bolt beats them to market by a minimum of 6 months, and has more content at the $35,000 price point.

Besides, incentive structure makes leasing the more attractive acquisition method on EVs.

You can buy for 35+ options, and get an extra 7500 on your tax refund, our you can lease for probably in the $150/month range.

I'll absolutely lease a Bolt or 3, whichever costs less, just for the benefit of putting less wear on my fun cars, even if $150/month (+ insurance + electricity) is about double (+ insurance + electricity) what I'm paying for fuel on my paid off toys.
>>
>>14752854
This, early Model Ss are averaging less than 60,000 miles between major drive train component replacement.
>>
>>14749008
It doesn't matter if the car's maximum speed is 5 kilometers per second if it takes 20 years to get there. The cars have weak acceleration above 80-100km/hr, so for highway overtaking they are pretty meh. From a stop they are insane, but once you are at speed it falls off hard.

In all fairness, they have likely fixed then drive train issues, or at least significantly alleviated them. Plus the 3 is smaller, so it's going put less strain on the motor. I'm more referring to stupid shit like the liftgate getting filled with water, little plastic clips all over the place breaking and being a pain in the dick to fix, software hiccups, sound insulation improvements, the autopilot assist hardware being less advanced, and the like.

The catastrophic things like the drive train were just inexcusable to begin with. It's the stupid fiddly shit that makes it dumb to buy into new products the instant they hit the market. This is true practically everywhere, not just with cars.

If people want to pay to be beta testers, that's fine by me. I rarely have time to deal with that.

Real estate agent here. I'd say once a month in the slow season, and an average of 2 times a week in the high season.

Most I've ever done was 700 and change in a day because I had to go to court in 2 different fucking states over contractor disputes, personally sign off on something else near the border of a third, and then was just pissed off enough I chugged a quart of coffee and drove 300 miles straight home at 2 in the morning.

I've got a cabin on a lot without electricity 126 miles from my work or 115 miles from home.

In cold weather, the S can lose up to 40 miles of range overnight, so a go up Friday, come home Sunday trip to ice fish (something I did every other weekend this winter) is just barely possible with a P90D, never mind a 3.

Or my paid off truck can get me to work and back each day for ~$3.

Currently it runs at up to 120kw. They want to get them up to 200kw, but I think that's going to be a while cause shoving that much power down a cable requires all sorts of liquid cooling magic, and there's limitations on the battery tolerances as well.

Tesla has lane keeping tech, and it's by far and away the best on the market right now. They also have a lot of nice little features like automatic high beam dimming (and it's not functionally retarded either), cruise control that dynamically adjusts speed based off of the car in front of you and speed limits (you can configure it to go over the limit too).

It's actually some very good stuff, and I say that as someone who is pretty apathetic to tesla in general.

The cruise control stuff was really nice when driving with a friend. Just set it, and stay on the road. Car handles the speed by itself and you don't have to think about it at all. Very little driver fatigue.
>>
>>14753721
If I were Tesla Motors, I'd be very happy about that.

If autopilot was that easy, it'll be on every modern car.

Yes it's a few sensors, a few very important sensors that have to monitor other vehicles, lanes, position, distance, etc.
It doesn't even need a powerful processor.
It needs smart engineering and a ton of calibration

The fact that they're willing to make ALL those sensors + control module standard is mindblowing for price.
Try getting adaptive cruise control on any modern car and see how much that option costs you.
And that's only ONE small part of autopilot - the easiest part at that

Last time I drove any car that had the tech was at least 6-7 months ago, so things might be different now, but Tesla's lane keeping tech was by far and away the best of any manufacturer.

The other stuff isn't really that advanced, but most other manufactures had some hiccups with the dynamic cruise control stuff, whereas teslas was buttery smooth. Others have probably gotten better, but Tesla definitely came in and raised the bar.

Jesus, the only thing worse would be if they copied modern toyota.

>>14753764
It WILL be on every modern car, asshole. The reason it's taken so long is because things needed to get cheap - things have now gotten so cheap that it would cost telsa more to make the cars without the sensors and processors rather than just putting them into everything.
Do you really think people would complain if it was a $500 option and they threw a couple processor boxes in?
It's clearly not expensive for tesla to do. All the effort is in the programming, which now that it's mostly done costs nothing.

They're trying to sell this overpriced and overspec (kek water cooled) POS to people who are laughing at it.

Do you need decent FPGA/GPU power to process camera data? Yes
Do you need anything close to that for CONTROL of vehicle after sensor data is processed? No
>>
I am amazed at how ugly the Model 3 is. It has been hailed as the make or break product for the company and the design was this off.

And the interior is even worse. It looks like a barren wasteland with functional design taken from cheap French cars. "We'll just put all the information on the centre of the dashboard and we don't even have to reverse it for the UK exports!"

I hope you can actually make the interior nicer with some options. Like having a three-spoke steering wheel with actual buttons.

Using multiple processors would be fucking stupid, a few more meters of wire is a hell of a lot cheaper.

Not the actual unit, though. Nvidia are fucking retards who expect a self driving car to calculate the atmospheric pressure along the entire GPS guided route immediately or some other dumb shit, you don't need anywhere near that much processing power for automated overtaking and shit.

The latest A4's cruise control also stays in lane/obeys speed limits as an option for the most expensive trim. Don't think it can change lanes or anything though.
>>

As at least a dozen people in this thread alone have said, it's very likely not the final interior. Tesla needed to make this clearer, though.

2016 M4 doesn't even have a backup camera.
Do you have any idea how much money OEMs pay suppliers to throw this stuff onto cars?
They're not paying material cost.

If it was a $500 option, it'll be amazing.
But it's not that cheap.
The radar needed for adaptive cruise alone is much more than that (to the customer as an option).

Tesla does have the advantage here with having alot of inhouse work done on the software side. But sensor/control module cost is still a factor, and Tesla does NOT make that inhouse.

Remember model 3 is high volume. Parts cost per car.
R&D/Engineering/Programming is one chunk cost.
Throwing all those sensors on high volume car is $$$$
>>
>>14753829
It is clearly wishful thinking on /o/'s part.

Why wouldn't it be "the final interior?" What significant changes could they make between now and this time next year? It's put up or shut up time. The production lines are being setup as we speak.

I take this back. I read your post wrong.
You said "to a single unit"

That's only possible if Tesla is buying all these things from one supplier.
I don't think they are.
It's slightly cheaper and 200% less headache to have smaller more purpose built control module simply work together.
Then one dedicated master module to make final decisions

Do you realize it's more retarded to use multiple processors rather than sending it to a single central unit, albeit not as ridiculous as nvidia seem to think you need?

>>14753845
That's because BMW are stingy cunts.

The fact remains that the hardware telsa needs in order to make it happen cannot be that expensive, or else they would have made it an option on the lower trims.

The sensors don't need to be from a single supplier in the same way your ECU doesn't need purely [x] sensors to run the engine, as long as it's simple the sensors tesla chose they can use a single processing unit and have everything going into and out of it.

Telling you man, if tesla are talking 100k cars, the cost of the hardware must be small enough to make it not worthwhile to not include it on some models.

I actually thought that they would use a HUD for primary driving information but when I saw that the fucking steering wheel had no buttons, I had a guess that the 35k price point is reached with a lot of cuts.

That's because the engine ecu is meant to cope with sensor failure and has many safe assumptions/backups.
But even the engine ecu requires a base set of sensors or else it won't work.

And try putting a sensor from one OEM and plug it into another OEM's ecu. It will not work.

Maybe tesla is taking a risk with volumes to reduce hardware costs, maybe it's part of the $35k cost, which is why extended range battery packs are an option instead of standard
>>

The lack of steering wheel buttons is NOT a price saving measure, it's a retarded statement.

Note Elon's careful wording during the presentation. Autopilot hardware is standard. The software to make it work on the other hand costs $2500 on models S and X. I assume that cost is the same on 3.

The people paying $2500 for $500 worth of hardware more than make up for the few people who don't use the feature. Plus, it can be purchased at any time now rather than only when the vehicle is ordered thanks to OTA software updates.

Bro, the sensors literally do not matter. It doesn't matter who makes or where they come from, you get the lowest bidder and then build your processing box around it. In this case we're talking radars and cameras, they don't even remotely need to come from the same place, all you need is the data from them going into the box which decides what to do with it.

Feel free to screenshot this post, because i'm going to tell you exactly how this works for tesla:
All the sensors needed will be wired directly into 1 or 2 main boxes, which will run the controls needed to act on this.

The entire system is so cheap that in 18 months and 100,000 units, tesla decided not to bother making it an option. They figured it would be cheaper to simply include all the sensors on the production car, and then they figured they could reduce costs further by reducing the number of independent processors, so now there's a computer in the car running the automated driving shit as well as some other things. Maybe it's now all connected to the electric controls which are being run by a single thing, who knows.

They didn't just decide that they wanted to put the automated driving shit in every car, they just saw that by the time they did it to [x] amount ordered with the system they could just put it in everything for such a little extra that the marketing gained from it offsets the cost.

There are pros and cons to going with one single control unit vs. distributed.
It's not like with multiple ecu's you're adding 2x/3x more parts, you're just spreading it out.

You have to consider things like
- R&D effort to merge different system together
- Single point of failure vs. sub system failures
- Who is supplying these different systems/parts
- Parallel processing of data

Not directly into a lead position, but you can easily (ha) get into an intro position if you are fresh from school (or even paid internships if still in school).

If you have decent experience already (2-3 years) you can get a junior position no problem, demand in the area seems high these last 12 months.

If you are fresh out of school, having non-job experience is also helpful. Personal projects can show alot about skills.
Process/Systems can be easily taught, personal coding skills and deductive reason can't be :(
