-A 200-300 mile range doesn't make it practical for my life, come back and talk to me when we get to 500 miles

-I don't like the interior of any Tesla so far produced

-No charging infrastructure in North Carolina to speak of

-Have no need for one

I'll reserve completing shit canning the interior on the Model 3 till I see one in person, but I expect to be disappointed. The interior quality on the sedan is waaaaaaay below the price point of the car

There has to be a charging station in Raleigh, our liberal hipster capital.

I see so many Teslas around the area. Where dafuq are they charging them?
>>
it really hinges on if it looks good and the performance of the base model
>>
>>14747240
I've seen 3 Teslas over here in Asheville and Boone.

I don't know how the fuck they can stand it.
>>
>>14747273
>>14747297

To be fair, I have seen a few in Raleigh. Shit one of the public pools my wife used to lifeguard at had a couple.

And I have seen a few on the UNC main campus in Chapel Hill

But in so far as the owners I have talked to, they all charge them at home, because they never have to drive them farther than the factory range on one charge. I can't even imagine using one of those things in Boone....
>>
>>14747240
I respect your opinion, but there are rumors of options exceeding 300 miles, which is not far off from my own sedan, and there are the usual charging solutions around your state and of course at your home. Even if it's not cost effective yet it is still intriguing.
>>
>>14747315
My Mother/Father in law have a farm in Boone that I have to visit somewhat on the regular, and that's about 180 miles one way, so that trip is what I always use as a measuring stick with electric cars.

If I could get there and back comfortably on one charge, I would consider it 'practical' for me and my lifestyle. Granted I know I could always set up a charger at home (which is what at the owners I have ever talked to did).

If the Model 3 could produce an option with a ~350 mile range, I would at the very least give it due consideration. Again, the interior just hasn't ever done it for me (And again, that's a personal tick more than anything else), but god damn you can't get around the performance.
>>
Really want an EV and the Model 3's price point and tax credit makes it really attractive, but range anxiety and uncertainty whether or not the next time I move I'll even have a garage to charge in gets the better of me.

Also, kind-of curious what kind of range a 2012 Model S gets after 4 years of regular charging.

I like that Tesla, despite being an Electric car Manufacturer and a kind-of meme'y one at that. they make their cars relatively normal looking and not all "tron-legacy" looking like some other EV cars (cough bmw I8 and I3 cough)

That's all i ever wanted from Electric cars was an Electric car that just looks normal and not like something out of a futuristic cartoon. i hope to god they stay this way in their designs.
>>
>>14747338
Do your mother and father in law not have electricity at their farm? I don't want to convince you of a Tesla, I'm just asking why you consider it an argument.
>>
>>14747457
the model S was that but the model X front fascia is going in the wrong direction, it's too minimalist and weird
>>
>>14747536
The S's faux grille was one of the few things that turned me off about them, but then the X came out and made me realize the alternative can look way worse.

It'll be a real problem going forward for EVs. Closely mimic fossil fuel cars or let form follow function and risk looking weird?

I don't feel that a Tesla is a car you own, as much as rent.

It's too similar to current phones and software in that way. If they open-sourced their software, I'd consider it.

When are they gonna stop fucking around and make a wagon?
>>
>>14747415
A basic requirement for a GT car is to be able to travel long distances, something Tesla is struggling with.

They can only make glorified commuters.
>>
>>14747240
This. It's an awesome vehicle but if you drive heavily every day it's not a viable option. The E-class, A6 and 5 series (soon the S90 & Continental too) have far nicer interiors at a lower price point too.

I understand that some like the clean simple interior design of the Model S but despite their strong sales they're missing out on the large conservative traditional luxury buyer segment who find it overly sterile to the point that it's boring.

I feel like I'm just sitting in a moving Ikea furnished apartment sitting in one, though the build quality is definitely better than Ikea. My dad was looking into a 70D, but is leaning towards an E300 because of the interior.

One thing worth considering is that the long-term costs of an EV are much lower than a regular car because of far fewer moving parts and the much lower price of grid power compared to gas.

No, you can't. Part of "affording a car" is being able to afford the maintenance and/or having the means to properly maintain it. For electric cars, that means having the ability to charge it securely. Can't charge it securely? Then you can't afford it.

>Buying first generation of anything
>Ever

I like my cars when they don't spend a quarter of their life in the shop thanks. Even as someone who firmly believes that electric cars are in fact the future, I have zero intention of buying a Model 3 anytime soon.

The first generation or two of anything like this is going to be filled with engineering issues. That's just how things are in the real world. Now, add on the ridiculous backlog as they ramp up production (I don't think they've even shipped a single X outside of showroom models to Europe yet). Couple this with the fact that Tesla as a company couldn't keep to a deadline if held every employee at gunpoint, and you are looking at 2019-2020 before the car is actually both possible and worth buying compared to any number of other econo cars.

When my current vehicle finally dies, I might consider it, but it's not going to be anytime soon.
>>
>>14752364
It's not gonna come out on time.

All of Elon's timetable promises have been tempered with
>if the gigafactory is fully operational,
and they are missing milestones on that project.

I predict the Bolt beats them to market by a minimum of 6 months, and has more content at the $35,000 price point.

Besides, incentive structure makes leasing the more attractive acquisition method on EVs.

You can buy for 35+ options, and get an extra 7500 on your tax refund, our you can lease for probably in the $150/month range.

I'll absolutely lease a Bolt or 3, whichever costs less, just for the benefit of putting less wear on my fun cars, even if $150/month (+ insurance + electricity) is about double (+ insurance + electricity) what I'm paying for fuel on my paid off toys.
>>
>>14752854
This, early Model Ss are averaging less than 60,000 miles between major drive train component replacement.
>>
>>14749008
It doesn't matter if the car's maximum speed is 5 kilometers per second if it takes 20 years to get there. The cars have weak acceleration above 80-100km/hr, so for highway overtaking they are pretty meh. From a stop they are insane, but once you are at speed it falls off hard.

In all fairness, they have likely fixed then drive train issues, or at least significantly alleviated them. Plus the 3 is smaller, so it's going put less strain on the motor. I'm more referring to stupid shit like the liftgate getting filled with water, little plastic clips all over the place breaking and being a pain in the dick to fix, software hiccups, sound insulation improvements, the autopilot assist hardware being less advanced, and the like.

The catastrophic things like the drive train were just inexcusable to begin with. It's the stupid fiddly shit that makes it dumb to buy into new products the instant they hit the market. This is true practically everywhere, not just with cars.

If people want to pay to be beta testers, that's fine by me. I rarely have time to deal with that.

Real estate agent here. I'd say once a month in the slow season, and an average of 2 times a week in the high season.

Most I've ever done was 700 and change in a day because I had to go to court in 2 different fucking states over contractor disputes, personally sign off on something else near the border of a third, and then was just pissed off enough I chugged a quart of coffee and drove 300 miles straight home at 2 in the morning.

I've got a cabin on a lot without electricity 126 miles from my work or 115 miles from home.

In cold weather, the S can lose up to 40 miles of range overnight, so a go up Friday, come home Sunday trip to ice fish (something I did every other weekend this winter) is just barely possible with a P90D, never mind a 3.

Or my paid off truck can get me to work and back each day for ~$3.

Batteries are expensive. They're getting cheaper though. That's what the Model 3 and Chevrolet Bolt are all about (I almost typed Volt, fuck you Chevy). Batteries are likely gonna get cheaper in a few years too.

does heat not become a massive problem as you increase rpm relative to input voltage

>Internal combustion engines generally have a flat torque curve and increasing power as rpm increases.
I think normally torque runs out just below 6000 rpm unless your engine is tuned to make torque above that level

>>
>>14753514
It's tesla's proprietary rapid DC charge tech. Yeah it's fucking confusing.

Currently it runs at up to 120kw. They want to get them up to 200kw, but I think that's going to be a while cause shoving that much power down a cable requires all sorts of liquid cooling magic, and there's limitations on the battery tolerances as well.
>>
