Looking to get an early 2000's jeep wrangler sport as a daily driver.

I agree, do not buy a wrangler as your daily. They are shit at speed, shit in rain, and thirsty.

If your besties are jeep guys just get a Cherokee. More useful daily, or find one cheap enough you can keep both.
>>
>>14744625
>death wobble
Common problem with wranglers, especially with wider tires. I changed out my steering stabilizer and it cured mine.
>gas
Around 200 miles to a tank
>lift
3"-3.5" lift and 33s tires is good for a TJ, 4.10 would be the optimal gear ratio, and the rear d35 will need changed sooner than later if you romp on it.
>>
How hard is it to rebuild an alternator? I want to know if its worth it to rebuild my old one of if I should just buy a new one.
>>
What would cause a turbo car to smoke out the exhaust?

I test drive a Turbo Probe today. It smoked while stopped, backfired, and the engine light came on when you weren't on the gas. Could it be a blown head gasket? It still felt like it had most of its power
>>
>>14744747
It's just a typical electric generator/motor. A magnet spins inside a copper armature. Swapping out the brushes is about all it takes.
>>
>>14744625
If you want a DD 4x4 with good gas milage, you might as well get one of the little suzukis.

White smoke is definitely the head gasket, blue smoke is bad rings, black smoke is that it's running rich. It's all bad don't buy that car

Just buy a cherokee and throw some 29 inch Goodyear wranglers on it and call it good. Daily mine and so some light off roading in it (trails the electic companies use to service their poles and whatnot). Its mpgs will be better and there will be more useable cargo space. aftermarket is generally cheaper than a wrangler as well.

When I pulled in I had the intention of trading my wagon for it, but after driving it, no matter how fun it was, my wagon is in much much much better condition.

The smoke was a very light blue, so yea, it's fucked. Thanks for the info
>>
>>14744831

its an 01 XJ. the 96 and earlier had better wiring so there were fewer electrical gremlins. I had a 96 until i had this one. Overall the 01 is better. It has 108k miles in near mint condition and cost 6k USD. the ride isnt bad. Kind of truckish but its rugged because of that. Solid axles front and back with leaf springs in the back so its pretty beefy for the size vehicle it is. the 4.0 engine gets me to highway speed fast enough to merge at 65 mph. lots of low end power. not the best for taller people but my 6'1'' brother fits fine in it. Very maneuverable in city streets. The wind can push you around a bit but its fine. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pcWzOk9K0GQ 9/10 i love it
>>
How do you buy a vehicle with a lien against it?..

I have a friend who's brother has a clean 2009BMW 328 90k miles with $5000 left on the loan... Lost job cant pay it probly gonna get repoed. Wants 6k for the car? How do i get the title without handing over the money up front
>>
>>14745511
You have to go to the bank or who ever holds the tittle, pay it off then pay him
>>
Why do you think you need a lift on a dd that you're not going to take onto heavy off road trails? Wranglers are neat because you take the top off and that's about it
I have zj grand cherokee that I love
I get about 500 miles on a tank of gas and it handles highway speeds just fine
She's my dd and my fun car and she tackles the "roads" up to my hunting spot every year with out worry

Accord to the volvo.

Pre 99 aren't too bad. Basic maintenance stuff is normal. Suspension parts aren't terrible. It's slightly more than domestic but it's better quality too.

Whatever you do don't buy URO. That shit is garbage.

post-99 PREPARE YOUR ANUS. Lots of parts have to be reprogrammed which is a stealer thing and they charge out the ass.

>whats the deal with death wobble?
Loose track bar. The solution to this if you even have it is to first tighten the bolts on both ends. If that won't fix it then replacing it will (it's a 40 dollar part).
>How often do you fill up a tank?
Twice a month. Gas is going to be annoying but not unbearable like a hummer.
>Whats a good tire size and lift if I would barely off road the thing, mostly to and from work.
31s like I have, 32 if you want to push it but never go beyond 33s in stock axles or you'll snap them.

I dont live where there is salt and snow, I wouldn't know.

Hey im also looking to buy a used Cherokee but the values people put on them range so much. There's like an '89 someone wants $8000 for, there's a 2001 for $7000, etc. How do I get a realistic value on the cars that are heavily modified and such? Will putting bigger wheels onto my car cause any damage to my engine or drivetrain? I'm going from 14 inch to 15 inch wheels, not too big of a change. Some websites are saying putting big wheels will damage your transmission but I don't see how that would be true unless you're increasing the diameter of your tire+wheels by a very large amount.

Specifically I took 15 inch wheels off a Subaru Forester and will put them on my Subaru Legacy.
>>

No. Your speedo might be off a little but that's about it.

so on my parents car, the mechanic said to them to change from using I think either 15w50 or 20w50 (can't remember, people recommend online 15w60 for that engine for everyday use, toyota factory recommended is 10w30) to using 25w70 instead.
the mechanic said to change 'because of something with the engine'. I don't know what though, it's a high KM engine but won't changing too thick of oil make the wear worse?
also what reason would be that you'd change to thicker oil?

Is there something that a dealership can add to a tank of gas to boost your mileage?

I drove about 150 miles a few weeks ago to buy a Mustang GT and on the test drive and the highway drive home with the tank of gas they filled it with, it was getting 27 mpg with the cruise set at 70. Ever since then, I can't come close to that. I've tried setting the cruise everywhere from 55-80 and the best I can do is about 23.5 mpg. Made me wonder if they can add something to make you think 'Golly gee whiz, this get's pretty decent mileage!'

perhaps it was the tempterature that day, the humdity, or a combination of them.
or maybe dealerships have magic gas
>>
>>14749347
I wondered that as well, it just seemed unlikely that it would make such a difference since the weather has been fairly consistent here. It made me wonder if they couldn't put something in the gas to make it more 'energy dense' I guess. Was just a thought.

Are your control arms bent? Are your bushings shot? If not the guy is full of shit. Why did you bring it in anyway? If it was for an alignment then you're being fed the usual upsell bilge they try to trick people into.

Can't see why you would need to replace them both in any case unless you smashed the front end into a curb. Parts sound about right but the labor is ridiculous. You'd be better off doing the job yourself.

Any detailers here?

I wanted to try and polish up my Dad's 25 year old van but I'm not sure if it actually has any clearcoat left. The roof and hood are done for because it has the obvious clearcoat bubble-fade thing. But I'm not so sure about the rest of the panels.

Is there an easy way to know or check? Or is it just assumed there is clearcoat if there are no obvious signs of clearcoat failure?

I bought a 2016 Rubicon to dd, it's very nice. I wouldn't dd anything older than a 2012 though. It was my dream to own a wrangler new till I'm dead, line my dad's cj 5. Not positive it's smart spending 40k+ before mods on a jeep, but I love it anyway. I may buy an old track miata or something for cheap if I want to go fast.

Is there any possible way to import a 1999 nissan silvia s15 without getting arrested and the car destroyed? I heard the chassis on the 1999 model was the same as the s14, so you can argue that it is similar enough with the same engine to let it through.

From the NHTSA website:
>You should note that the 25 year period runs from the date of the vehicle's manufacture. If the date of manufacture is not identified on a label permanently affixed to the vehicle by its original manufacturer, to establish the age of the vehicle, you should have documentation available such as an invoice showing the date the vehicle was first sold or a registration document showing that the vehicle was registered at least 25 years ago. Absent such information, a statement from a recognized vehicle historical society identifying the age of the vehicle could be used.

So no, your retarded argument that the chassis is the same as an older car won't convince anyone to ignore a law.

I've owned an 850 turbo that I bought for cheap and repaired for a little less than a year. It hit a deer, but no biggie.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7V-G3PiRUc
>repair/maint.?
very easy, pretty cheap, salvage parts are everywhere. Just went to an LKQ pick your part and there were like 3 p80 chassis to choose from. They do tend to eat struts and shocks like >>14751223 said, especially if you have tires thinner than 225. Get a turbo for dat turbobrick action

Seafoam into an intake or intake vacuum source, like the brake booster line.

Dip the hose in, engine will die down. Let it get back up in rpm, and repeat. When it is almost all gone (like half remaining) dunk the hose in and let the engine die out.

Sit for 10 minutes. Start car and look under. Any smoke will show you where the leaks are.

Also, this is good for your engine. Catch 22.

This going to be strangely specific but does anyone know of a car that is
aesthetic
from the 60s to 80s
not an SUV or truck
preferably a ford
has a wheelbase from 94 inches to 114 inches
a track width close to 70 inches
At least four seats

I know this is unlikely but I have a cool project cooking I just need to find a body that I like.

Usually they are held on by a C clip.
You have to pull the crank, push on the door panel and hopefully you will reveal enough of the mechanism that holds it together. A small screwdriver should do the job of disengaging the C clip

Unless, of course, it's not held by a nut/bolt which is hidden by a plastic cap right on the crank.

I just got back from honda dealership from an oil change, and they told me the front links on my 2009 accord coupe are cracked and need to be replaced. quoted me for $250.

>What are front links? never heard of them before

>is it normal for them to crack on a mild driven honda this early?

>can I replace them myself pretty easily?
>>
Should I buy a 944 or a trans am gta? Both are 1987s. Both have less than 75k miles and both have very clean interiors judging by the pictures. 944 is NA and the trans am is a gta comes with the 5.7L.

For the porsche, the guy has all maintenance records for that last 29 years, including the original selling papers. No problems reported in ad.
The trans am reports that the ac compressor went out and he has the replacement compressor.

944 is asking for $5600, seems pretty fair to me. Tranny is asking for $8500, which there is no way in hell I'll pay that much, but I would be ok with 6500-7000.

I like both cars, although I'm leaning more towards the porsche since the guy is asking for less, has maintenence records, and has no issues. But I do like turd gen trans ams as well, and gtas are getting pretty hard to find.

Oh and also I will be dailying this lol

>what are front links?
they connect your stabilizer bar to the control arm

>cracked
if the dust boots cracked, then the links should be replaced because they are probably contaminated. you could just throw new covers on them, but you would still need to take them out so you might as well replace them. The links themselves should not crack in normal everyday driving

>$250
this is about $50 for parts and $200 for labor. not terrible for a stealership.

Is this some kind of strangely worded way to say it changes the point where the gears are shifted or are you actually convinced the gearbox has a whole different reduction that is used in sport mode?

no, of course not. It's easier to say "different gear ratios" than "it changes the speeds for your gear shifts on your automatic transmission"

Do you think a body shop can pull this dent? I haven't even had the car 3 weeks and some jackass door dinged it. I think the paint is unharmed, but I don't know if a body shop can pull a ding like that on the panel crease. It's a welded double walled fender so I don't think they can get to the back side to knock it out.
>>
Spark plugs and spark plug wires are pretty much universally standard right? If I bought X spark plug and Y wires I wouldn't even have to worry whether or not they're compatible?
>>
>>14763762
Jesus dude your car is a mirror.
>>
>>14763762
Yes it can be fixed. Is it on the quarter panel or the fender? Sometimes we can sneak a pdr pick through the striker on the door jamb to get access behind the quarter panel. It can be fixed tho
>>
>>14764283
It's the passenger side rear quarter panel, right about at the 1 o'clock position above the tire. It wouldn't even be the worst thing in the world if they had to drill a hole in the wheel well and then plug the hole after. I just hated the idea of having to get paint work done for a ding that happened before I could even get an actual plate to replace the 60 day tag. Unfortunately I am out of town away from home for the weekend but Monday I'll go to a body shop and get an estimate.
>>14764274
It's got a long ways to go. The car is black with 14k miles and I can tell the previous owner didn't take particularly good care of the paint. It's covered in small swirl scratches from improper washing. I picked up a ton of paint care products and have been working each panel over as I get free time with clay, an orbital polisher and wax.
>>
>>14764333
Well you're going to need paint work regardless desu. The PDR guy won't be able to pop out the ding because the metal has stretched. It can be popped and smoothed out with minimal body filler but the entire panel will have to be clear coated all the way across the roof line.
>>
>>14764392
*la la la I can't hear you*
Please don't make me sad. I wish I'd have seen the person do this. If it was truly an accident that's one thing.. but if they copped an attitude or even did it on purpose there might have been a fist fight or their door panel kicked in.
