Because the royale actually wasn't a show of engineering and luxury. It was an exercise in purpose built extravagance, however ill timed.
Not even the veyron is particularly buggati like, in the sense that it was built by experience and craftmanship even if tecnologically it isn't avant garde (bugatti kept axles in the front and cable operated brakes longer than anyone else, just as an example)

I really like what Cadillac has done with the brand. Less than 10 years ago I thought it all looked absolutely horrid.
