How are these?

very cool

Reliable?
>>
>>14739799
probably follows the usual bmw rules of

very reliable if you maintain it, falls apart quickly if you don't
>>
>>14739824
So any car?
>>
>>14739799
Whatever they once were, the newest is over 20 tears old so stone-cold reliability is not a realistic factor. You want that, then go buy a new Civic and stfu.
>>
>>14739847
So you don't actually have experience with them and post anyway? This isn't a forum. You don't have some post counter to inflate
>>
>>14739859
no, you're a fucking moron for thinking a 20-25 year old 5-series that cost the equivalent of $65,000 in 2016 money is going to be reliable after 3-4 owners, the 3rd one being a buy here pay here used car lot. it'll be likely missing rockers, door bottoms, and the battery box from rust and all the rubber/plastic parts (including and not limited to trim, cooling system, mounts, bushings) will have dryrotted 10 years ago and are a ticking timebomb for waiting to go off and fail in spectacular fashion, from blown headgaskets from the fan hitting the radiator and cutting the hoses to the guibo falling the fuck apart and your driveshaft coming loose at 70mph

so yes, stone cold reliability isn't a fucking realistic factor. buy a 1996 corolla if you can't afford one.

E39 is better, but that's ok.
>>
>>14739901
Nobody but you said stone cold reliability or some perfect car. Reliable to most people means "Does this series have any big issues that need constant work or read their head often" not "Will this car never ever have any issues"

What's the typical problems?
>>
>>14740167
Bushings
Blown head gaskets due to overheating the engine
Cooling system
Rust
thats pretty much it
it's tough to kill the old BMW M20/M30/M50 engines unless they've been badly overheated in the past.
I know a guy driving a 1992 520i with 450k miles.
>>
>>14740200
Alright, thanks. Someone I know might buy it, All I know is that the car works and is being used currently probably daily. Might not have been used so much last year and before. Interior had some cosmetic issues. Just curious in general how they are in case it becomes my issue
>>
Which model?

>had a 525i
>coolant hose burst, no biggie, should be easy
>remove upper intake (Fml).
>hose is 5 headed monstrosity that costs $300

>only 1 key
>want spare
>only machine that cuts it is in Berlin
>$300 bucks

>valve cover COP gasket fails
>oil onto COP melts it
>cpu dies
>hue hue hue. $1200 total, for used parts
>>
>>14740287
530i I think
>>
>>14739736
coolant system in the 525s get trashed easily. Might as well do a H/G upon purchasing as well...
>>
>>14741558

If you have to ask this, you're not the right owner for one.

The E34 is considered one of the most reliable cars ever made. Just avoid the 520 or 525, they had the M20 they're not very powerful and did some suffer some issues.
