The 2001 and 2002 ones are done with butyl sealant that can be baked open. 2003 models are actually epoxied together, the headlight assembly will melt before the sealant ever does if you try to bake it. BMW is actually known for having particularly tough permaseal, ford's stuff can occasionally be worked with if you have a heat gun, a flathead screwdriver, and a lot of patience, but BMW permaseal is a lost cause.

I popped my wrenching cherry on Monday at my friend's garage: I took apart the right side headlight for cleaning (which turned out unsuccessful which is why I only took apart the right side headlight) and took out the cluster to remove some kind of a bug that somehow got stuck in there. doors are doors thankfully, stuff's easy to swap over.
if you're not migrating the airbag, be careful, make sure the new door is the correct kind of airbag (single vs dual stage), look up the difference if you don't know what i'm referring to.

also the shade on the new door will be slightly different due to mileage/age differences but probably not noticeable

Car's a 97 M3 with 133k miles. Anything else I should add to the list so far for a cooling system refresh? Going in depth, don't want to touch anything else until 10 years/80k miles from now.

Stewart High Flow Water Pump
Alumnium Water Pump Pulley
Behr Z3M Radiator or Mishimoto E36 Radiator
Rubber Hoses
BMW Coolant

Also forgot shocks and strut mounts. I kinda wanna take care of this. I have a feeling it was a halfassed torn strut tower fix, as the rest of the car is relatively rust free for a 20 year old northeastern car. Either way I'll have to hit it with a wire wheel and see how far does it go. Doubt car was hit, still has all stickers.

>>
>>14747053
Yep, $6500. It was $2000 less than similar M3s with the same mileage, and was bone stock owned by a older man.

And pretty much what I'm doing. The suspension is remarkably simple coming from double wishbone setups. It was $2000 cheaper but I'll know it'll be 100% maintained after I do all that work. The oiling stuff and subframe reinforcement I can skip but it's more of a well, if I'm doing the motor mounts I might as well drop the subframe and do the oil pan gasket and oil pump nut while I'm at it. Then might as well add a baffle and new pickup, etc.

>TFW I actually thought about checking rod bearings for a minute too since I was doing all that work and was gonna already have the pan off

what's good/bad about BMW e30 318?

I've been looking to get a 20+ year old Japanese lightweight rwd car, but a friend is selling one of these, and I figured it could maybe be comparable. I don't really know shit about BMWs-- but I'd rather buy a car that old from someone I know...
>>
>>14749794
Is that the 318is?
Good: 2300 lbs curb weight
Very easy to work on
Aftermarket
Bad: everything associated with old cars - rust, worn bushings, cracked rubber etc.

>>
>>14750066
what do you mean by more comfort stuff?
the m235i might be more comfortable because of softer suspension.
I`d go for the M2 because of dat power and LSD

wait six months and get a used m2 to avoid the initial depreciation hit
some rich people realize they don't like a car within like a month and sell it off at a big loss, which is where you come in to pick it up

I'm in the same boat. Think I'll just wait for a low mileage used M2.

I told myself I'd go for a more practical DD like an AWD hatch or sedan after I sell off my 07 mustang gt but keep looking at/test driving coupes and roadsters. Kill me.
>>
>>14750519
Yeah well the M5 is like 5 times as expensive, ofc you gonna get cucked

540 is still a good car, just not as good as the M5
>>
>>14751286
for the price difference you can mod a 540i to be pretty comparable to an m5, and maintenance costs on the 540i are like half or less because of the massive difference in parts costs. everything on the m5 is super expensive
>>
>>14739080
Why is there so much shitposting on this board when it comes to BMW? In relation to reliability, cost, looks, speed etc. Like pretty much anything newer than 2001 gets shit on, and even those get shit on decently
>>
>>14751302
For the price difference you could mod a 540 to wreck a stock M5
>>
>>14751335
supercharger is expensive though, and considering the similar weight you'll need similar power if not a little more. a good VF setup will get you to 450 wheel horses but a good VF setup is 6 grand.

you'll also need
>m5 steering box
>better brakes, either m5 or mod something with used porsche 17z brembo calipers
>better suspension, lots of coilover options with adjustable damping and height for like 1500 ish
>performance clutch/flywheel
>>
>>14751310
Why 2001? E39 and E46 were made both before and after 2001
>>
>>14751310
Because it's a fan base for something that has a part that everyone hates including the fan base just like civics and subies have their anoying cringy section of the fanbase just BMW is getting extra shit right now for some reason
>>
>>14751349
Yeah I was thinking more in terms of performance, otherwise you're probably right, upgrading EVERYTHING to M5 standard or better is definitely going to cost you.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge but, what is a VF setup? Also isn't there aftermarket brakes that are cheaper and as good as M5? Coilovers aren't that expensive.

I heard of a guy that bought a chinese turbo kit for his E36 328 and got like 350hp out of it, only cost him around 2.5 grand

oh, VF superchargers. it's pretty much the only real way to supercharge an e39 right now with any kind of knowledge base. nobody else makes superchargers for the m62/s62
>pic related, it's often lovingly referred to as "my pet snail"
i'm not a fan because it's so incredibly expensive and i just don't like centrifugal superchargers, too much of a power shift to the top end.

which is why i'm really interested to see what these research efforts with jaguar eaton blowers uncover
http://www.bimmerboost.com/showthread.php?44507-Eaton-Supercharger-Kit-E39-540i/page16

also that e36 had the m52b28 which is notoriously easy to turbo but the m62 is a different animal
>>
>>14751310
Their cars just haven't been as good or fun to drive as they used to be (or maybe other brands just caught up), which makes it easier to shit on badge snobs.
>>
>>14751439
I see, thanks for all the information. It can't be that much harder with the M62 though?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oQpwVy8rAZc
Here you see a "budget" m62 turbo set up (only 1 turbo but Im guessing since there isn't exactly room for one more)

I'll look into that thread
>>
>>14751349
I've driven both, the M5 steering box isn't that much better than the stock 540i.

The only real reason the M5's steering setup is different is becuase S62 Takes up so much space that stock wouldn't fit.

However if you were modding a 540i to out match the M5, I would suggest doing the Diff swap and going from the typical stock setup of 2.81 to 3.15, Like I have.

It makes a world of difference in handling the car hooks so much better with and DSC doesn't shut you down as hard if left on.

>>14751310
The reason anything newer than the E46 and E39 gets shit is becuase they're pretty impossible to repair with out buying a shit load of "special tools", and they're not old enough to where second hand buyers have bought and found shortcuts around buying said "special tools"

Its also becuase newer models have largely been watered down and have become comfy landbarges that babysit their drivers whereas older models weren't anything but that, at times.
>>
>>14751517
there's been some interesting work with remote turbos on the m62 by mounting the turbos waaaaay at the back right at the exhaust tip and running the intake all the way down there, but talk about turbo lag

>>14751526

>>
>>14751536

So in other words, poor people. Come on guys. I've had a 2010 E90 for 3 years now. According to this board I should have spend 150% of the price on repairs by now. Drives way better than any E46 I've ever driven, infinitely nicer inside. "Special tools"? A set of torx screwdrivers? A $30 code reader? Really breaking the bank there.

I know it's condescending, but honestly, using the "post your ride" threads as evidence, I'm going to say its poorfag jealousy rage.
