What xx,xxxk tier of HID headlights does /o/ consider rice?

I think anything past 12,000 or 15,000 is definitely getting there. I get especially rustled when I see them on super dirty/fogged headlights.

I'm considering 12,000 or 15,000. I have a new er model car with clean lenses. What do you guys think?

but why? let's get an argument going

Racecars don't use blue lamps, they use yellow. So it is not "rice", as stupid as the concept of what you present it as is.
>>
>>14735712
IT'S CALLED KELVIN YOU RETARDED SACK OF SHIT
>>
>>14735712
I have 10k on my headlights and 2k on my fog lights. For visibility I wouldn't go higher than 8k. I kinda regret the 10k now.
>>
>>14735759
I've always wondered why it's called that.

Are the materials in the light actually reaching thousands of degrees kelvin? Because wouldn't that require special materials?

A 12k light would be surpassing the boiling point of carbon at that temperature in Kelvin; how does it not cause the surrounding air to superheat and begin to melt the light fixture?

Thread hijack, because anything above 5000-6000K is factually less lighting.

Which brand is at least non-shit tier?

Here you go anon.
>>
>>14735766
As a non-reflecting body heats up, it start to glow red, and then orange, then yellow, then white. Those temperatures can be used to describe the spectrum of light radiated from the body at different temperatures. Even if no material can be heated to 12000k, the radiation spectrum can still be theoretically calculated and used to describe the light.

all them 70s cars below 3000k
its a good thing they don't go so fast
>>
>>14736035
Most cars come from the factory with 2800k lights. The cheapest halogens they can find.
>>
>>14736041
>The cheapest halogens they can find.
I sort of miss it along with incandescent and sodium lamps
feels weird to see color when driving at night

that said some of the led projectors are getting a really nice tone now
not just the pale while of the early types
>>
>>14735941
isn't the K just color temperature and not brightness? I think you need wattage or more precisely lumens to compare brightness or lighting
>>
>>14736072
Yes kelvin is just the color temperature but brightness of the hid lights affect it. Like a 10k 55w light is a lot less blue than a 10 35w light. I the 55w 10k in a previous car and they looked almost like a 6k
>>
>>14735739

But it's true, any more than 6,000k is rice tier.

4300k is best for visibility and what most OEMs choose, you can get whiter then bluer as you approach 6000k and then itsome just trading visibility for color.

5000k is a great compromise between look an d visibility.
>>
>>14736090
Color is not affected by wattage. That would defeat the entire purpose of colorcoding them in the first place.
Sounds like you had your hands on some noname ebay hid kit. Or incorrectly labeled.

Some color lights are better than others at "being reflected" and thus you get better visibility from yellower/whites than with blue.

Wattage does help with brightness overall, but just start wasting power on wavelengths of light you can't see

>>14736123
Something about the HID kits change the color temp of the bulbs due to wattage.
So a "10K" bulb, looks like 9K with a higher wattage (some change in volts or amps).
something to do with the way these bulbs work I guess.
Not surprising as they require warm up time and the color changes as this happens.

>>
>>14735712
Anything past 6000K starts to be too blue to be considered normal, maybe I could stretch to 8000K, but after that it's definitely rice territory in my book.

I have 6000K on my car and they are good for me, but I hate the deep blue light that is seen at the edges of the light beam because of the lens, something along the 4000/5000K gets rid of that almost completely and it's still white enough without a noticeable yellow hue.

12/15k K is just retarded
>>
>>14736123
Also I had projectors so that might have thrown off the color. I think they were ddtuning hid kit.
>>
>>14736180
Nope, I just changed the ballast of one of my bulbs from a 55 to a 35W and the colour didn't change.

That is, the two bulbs had a slightly different colour from each other straight from the box, so any difference you may notice is probably due to manufacturing defects or to uneven "wear" of the bulb.

As >>14736123 said, there is no point in colour coding if changing wattage is enough to change the colour.
A 6000K HID bulb has the same colour as a 6000K halogen bulb, what's different is the amount of light
>>
I think I'm dumb, but I bought silvania silverstar ultras which i believe are around 4700k, and then I bought 6000k LEDs for my fogs.

Haven't installed yet so here's hoping it doesn't look totally retarded.
>>
>>14736041
Actually it's 4300k
>>
>>14735720
>/treading in your own post

You're right though, anywhere between 4300k and 6000k is fine
>>
>>14736305
aren't fogs supposed be yellow for better light penetration in foggy or rainy conditions? putting in hid's for fog lights seems retarded to me at least
>>
>>14736505
I'm not putting in HIDs in either housing, I have LED bulbs rated to the color temperature's mentioned to go in the turn signal/fog light housings. But yes, I believe for best 'visibility' fog lights to be used in foggy conditions should be sub-3000k.
>>
>>14735712
I consider them all to be worthy of a quick smack with a baseball bat. Should be illegal, without exception.
>>
Does /o/ think yellow fogs are rice? Are they even better in the fog?
>>
>>14735720
This. 4300K to 6000K are acceptable temperatures. Anything below or above that is rice.
>>
>>14736593
No.
Yellow fog's are an early Lexus thing. I don't think they're any better but they look neat. Sometimes that's all that matters.

Yellow fogs was a EUdm thing. The French mandated yellow headlamps even.

My lows are 2000k French bulbs, 800 lumen, they are damn bright and really light the ditches, but won't hurt your eyes or blind you if I'm cresting a hill.
