first, WHY DOES NOBODY MAKE CARS THAT ARE THE COLOR GREEN anymore(especially emerald green or other darker shades)?

I'm thinking of buying a new car soon, I'll be trading up from an 06 Corolla S model I've had for some time, and while I am still quite happy with the vehicle I find that it doesn't have the storage space I'd like. that combined with other factors means I'm going to be out looking for a car soon(hopefully a first new car)

I'm looking for a median-low cost vehicle(peak price $37K) in the same rough size-range as a Honda CRV(my mother bought one recently so I'm using it as a benchmark of vehicular size).
Reliability is a major feature for me, with ease of home-maintenance being a second priority.
I like my Corolla's level of maneuverability, but I can compromise there.
I like the idea of getting a Manual transmission(I really like mine) but that's not a requirement.
does it come in dark green?

thoughts? opinions? accusations of faggotry?
WHY NOBODY MAKE GREEN CARS??!!!

Not that anon, but they're a cross section of the worst features from each class.

>more expensive
>higher insurance
>>
>>14732331
The Rav 4 is a decent platform. It is a city suv mind you. There are issues with them. The rear tie rods got 2 recalls and the rear seat belts got recalled some time ago. Toyota seems to be having a hard time with the EVAP systems on these for some time. Dirt and water get in and fuck up the charcoal canister. The 2.7l is a big 4 cylinder engine that I say performs ok. It won't rock your socks off like the 3.5l wich is no longer available in the rav 4. The interior can get fancy but you don't need that. I think you only have CVT trannys in those. LET THEM WARM UP IN WINTER. <----- your welcome.
>>
>>14732331
They're shit. Worse handling and mpg compared to a sedan or hatchback. Bought mainly by women.

Cash or financing? How much down?

You can take it on mild dirt road. It's not made out of cardboard. If you are looking for a sturdy suv you may be looking more at a 4runner or a YJ. The later you will have to get pre owned as they are discontinued. They both share the same motor. I don't think the 4runner comes in green and these things start somewhere below 40k.

>it looks a bit bigger than I'd call optimal, but yes, AND I like the color...

They are definitely bigger than a crossover, they're fairly wide and bulky. Body-on-frame construction as opposed to unibody though, much stronger. 4.0L V6 is the same one they put in the Tacomas and 4Runners, and its running gear is basically a compilation of everything you find on the Taco, 4Runner, and Prado. Comes in 6 speed manual or 5 speed automatic. Bunch of options packages to choose from, though I don't know if they ever got a sat-nav system in these. Not a deal breaker though, can always buy your own GPS.

My dad drives a 2008 with the Offroad Package, it's a very sturdy vehicle. 278,000km on it and he's done 2 minor repairs:

-replaced a rusted piece of transmission line that ran to the tranny cooler; $10 fix
-replaced a front wheel bearing that wore out, idk how much but not expensive

Still has the original Panasonic battery too.

Why are you suggesting something that will require replacing? Tacos have automatics that will easily last 300,000 on hard driving

A car that reached 300,000km without needing any attention paid to the manual transmission would be pretty amazing. I'm guessing he's had a clutch replacement, there's no way a stock clutch lasts that long no matter who is driving.

A Tundra gets 15 combined with the V8, an F150 gets 17 combined with its V8. A Tacoma is 21 combined with the automatic.

Secondly, the fact that it isn't a full size truck is advantageous if you need a smaller truck for your lifestyle or hobbies. Stop being a ridiculous troll.

>because I'd like to own a new car?
Fair enough, so long as you realize the trade-offs of buying new vs used
>not really, and it's inclusion wont really effect much.
If AWD isn't a large issue, have you thought of a wagon? Obviously if you like the body style of a small crossover better then go that direction, but with my own customers, I generally always recommend getting a model with AWD if it's available when going the small SUV route.
>not sure on numbers, just need more space(for both people and/or stuff hauling)
Do you want something that fits 2 adults in the back comfortably on a regular basis, or just something that could handle 2 adults from time to time?

Be that as it may, they still influence what colors cars get sold in

>>
>>14733247
Oh, I don't know. I've only ever towed with an automatic. I imagine it would be easier if you are good at it because you can stay in first more assuredly, but it would suck if you were bad at it and burned your clutch out on a boat ramp.

If you're interested in ordering one, go to tansky dot com and put in an inquiry (contact us) and ask for the Tacoma expert. I'll get in touch with you and see what I can do on a special order (might be invoice +$500 or something).

>>
>>14733311
Ok, so nothing that drastic, a compact SUV should be fine to handle the occasional dog, fat friend, or BDSM duffle bag

>assume I am untutored in this, what are the things?
Ok, as a general rule, your dollar will go much farther in the gently used market (2-4 years old) than it will the new cars. To avoid a long rambling paragraph, I'll break it down by pro's and cons

---New Cars---

Pros:

-Easier to get financed than used cars if you have no/new/bad credit

-Easier to get exactly what you want in terms of color/options if you're a picky buyer

-Seats have never been farted in

-More options available in terms of warranty/maintenance packages (depending on the dealership)

-Can score some great deals on model year end close out if you play your cards correctly

Cons:

-Deprecation, you can expect to lose 25-35% of your vehicles value in the first year. Unless you put down a sizeable down payment, you'll be holding negative equity for 3-4 years

-Because of depreciation (and again, assuming you don't pony up a large down payment) you're gonna have to deal with the car for 3+ years if you end up hating it

-Your dollar isn't going to go near as far. (As a real world example, my mother's 2014 C Class retailed for about 50K when it was new. As a 2 year old used car, she bought it with 19,000 miles on the clock for under 27K)

-You have to deal with new car dealerships attempting to upsell you on a shit load of bullshit

-Haggling on new cars can be waayyyy more of a pain in the ass then used (again, varies by area, but holds true here in my market)

part 2 incoming
>>
>>14732423
and camaro and silverado

>>
>>14733502

---Used Cars---

Pros:

-Your dollar will go much farther. Instead of settling for a base model new car, you can pick up a 2 year old used car with a nice assortment of options (/o/ laughs at this, but the number 2 reason I get from people trying to get out of a car is that they bought a base model and regret it)

-Some carmakers offer CPO (Certified Pre-owned) or other similar programs that can give you a better warranty on a used car than you could have gotten with a new one

-As a general rule, you have a lot more wiggle room to negotiate, and surprisingly, have to put up with slightly less dealer bullshit with used

-You have already let someone else take the biggest depreciation hit the car will ever have to weather. Even with a small down payment, you will likely owe close to what the car is worth after a year. This makes it way easier to get rid of if you hate it or life circumstances change.

Cons:

-Other people have farted in the seats

-You will have to do the proper due diligence to check the condition of the car, and deal with the prospect of a dealership trying to pass of something has been wrecked/flooded/abused/jizzed in

-It can be harder to secure financing on a used car if you have weak credit, and even with strong credit, APR's will be slightly higher versus new

-You have to deal with the vehicles available on the market at the time, making it harder to find exactly what you want if you are picky as fuck

-You won't necessarily have any factory warranty left, and not all CPO/aftermarket warranties are created equal, if you choose to walk down that path
>>
>>14733534
>>14733502
thanks man
granted the pros and cons it's almost a coin flip...it was my intent to do a 20% to 30% down payment...

>model year end closeout
am I out of time for 2015?

>farting in the seats
while I am a connoisseur of the flatulence I would like to be the one to have farted my own brand into the seats...

>a compact SUV should be fine to handle the occasional dog, fat friend, or BDSM duffle bag
I have a trio of fat friends, a German Shepard puppy with an adult weight estimate approaching 90 pounds, and it's 3 duffle bags and an attache case...what about the staff? or more importantly, do you think I could fit an 7 foot shaft or four?(collapsible st andrews cross...) still, sounds good.

>haggling
as bad as it sounds, thats what my mother is for...
>>
>>14733502
>>14733534

Pretty solid, but also depreciation rates are not universal. Buying a Tacoma, 4Runner, Wrangler, etc. is pretty safe even if new. Look at what 2011 Tacomas are selling for. They lost like $5-7k of their original sticker price with 60k miles on them.

The second thing is, negotiating on used cars seems easier because there is often so much more gross than even the buyer realizes. A car bought at auction can easily have five grand built into it and the buyer wouldn't know. Meanwhile, he thinks he is an expert because he haggled down $1,500.

New cars are far more predictable because everyone knows what the manufacturer's MSRP is and what the dealer's cost is, and they're replaceable, so you can play dealers against each other. The impression is that it's harder to get as much off is because the margins on new cars are so much less than used cars. Many high-volume new cars sell for big losses.
>>
>>14733619
>it was my intent to do a 20% to 30% down payment...
Excellent. 20% is really where you get the max benefit in terms of depreciation and financing (unless your credit is truly jacked the fuck up). I wouldn't do more than that unless it's to get the monthly payment under a specific figure.

>am I out of time for 2015?
Yup, you'd have to wait till December '16/Jan '17 to hit that target again

>while I am a connoisseur of the flatulence I would like to be the one to have farted my own brand into the seats...
if you go with leather seats, then it's not too bad. And you can always get a detail shop to take a hot water extractor to cloth ones

Hmmm, If you walked on my lot, I would say go sit in a newer model Rav-4, then go sit in a Highlander, and see what you think in terms of the extra space. You could fit the dog and BDSM gear in something like a Rav or CRV with the rear seats flipped down, but something Mid-size might be a bit better overall in terms of space

>as bad as it sounds, thats what my mother is for...
Go do it yourself man, it's a life skill you need to acquire. Nothing wrong with running the final numbers by someone who knows more than you, but you'll never learn watching someone else do it
>>
>>14733622
depreciation rates aren't universal, but it's a trade off. With things like a Tacoma, where it's very modest, most dealerships will be unwilling to move on the price.

The flagship Toyota dealer in my area doe ZERO negotiation on trucks, as in everyone pays sticker, and they still sell a shit load of volume

And of course used has bigger gross, but that translates to more savings IF you know how to haggle. And additional Pro I should have added to new car buys is that it's more idiot proof, where in Used car buying isn't
>>
>>14733683
Not him but is the 20% down rule universal for all lengths of a note? Between 36, 48 and 60 months all at 1.99%
>>
>>14733729
Yup. 20% eats up the sales tax/dealer fees, and gives you a decent head start on off the lot depreciation. Putting 20% usually nets you the best APR your credit profile will allow

If you have busted credit, then the threshold jumps to 30%
>>
>>14733707
There are half a dozen Toyota dealerships in my metro area. Unless it's a TRD Pro something, it's not selling for sticker. Tacomas and Tundras sell closer to invoice because customers just play all the dealers against each other. TrueCar in my market is embarrassing. The big dealers don't care because the small number of trucks they sell (relatively) isn't going to change much for all the Corollas/Camrys/RAV4s that sell under invoice. The overwhelming majority of revenue for a dealership comes from service, and you need to whore out new cars to get service customers.
