Not all cars have them. My mirrors on my 2001 shitbox don't have them and they don't seem to make things look further away. Never reall thought about it desu.

It's required on convex passenger side mirrors (since driver side mirrors are legally bound to be flat) but I don't know since when. Perhaps cars with flat passenger side mirrors were produced as late as 2001.

1. Mirrors give you the distance to the object plus the distance to the mirror. It's not magic.
2. Wing mirrors became convex as a safety feature a few years back. That makes things look further away, but enhances your field of view.
My old car has 'vehicles in mirror are losing' instead.

This is the law that says mirrors need to have that phrase on them, I don't know where to see what year it was introduced (and I'm too lazy to read all that stuff to see if it's mentioned at some point).
There is a broken link on one of the Wikipedia citations about this that says 2004, so that might be it.
Doesn't bug me as much as sun visor stickers.

If this information is correct, convex passenger mirrors were entirely illegal before 1982 just like convex driver mirrors still are, therefore the earliest possible mandatory application of the phrase would've been that year, though technically it's unclear whether the phrase was legislated the same year or later, and whether, as one Anon here is saying, some manufacturers may have used it voluntarily previously.

I'm jelly for you burgers, I fucking hate convex mirrors.
Especially at night, that small side of the mirror that I'd actually complex simply becomes a mess of lights with little to no reference as the distance from them.
I get it, it's meant to show that someone is close or in your blind spot so you can react accordingly, but I would have preferred a 100% flat and actually useful mirror over a partially useful and partially useless mirror.

Then explain what the fuck is up with the jeep grand cherokees current mirrors.
The drivers side is so far from being not flat it's actually unusable, it requires so long to adjust to such a different field of view. It's literally quicker for me to look at the center mirror and head check.
