Just got the head out of my mr2 (gen II 3s-gte)

I ordered a head gasket kit from rockauto, and some assorted hardware from Toyota

How can I tell how healthy the head is?
The intake valves are blackish, the exhaust valves are a dry brown

What else should I do while I'm in here? Doing the HFH and the thermostat, any other ideas?

The motor and turbo are both relatively healthy, it just needed a head gasket because it ran hot for a while

Holy shit.
You're going to fuck this up if you haven't already.
Take the head to a shop please. Leave it to the professionals to make sure it's good.
And you'll probably fuck up the installation.

Take the valves out and clean / lap them.

No real reason not to if you have the head off already.

You're a cuckold

>>14723696
Thanks boss

think the brown exhaust valves were from it running hot?
>>
>>14723696
It's going to need valve stem seals too.
But if he's asking questions like this on /o/ then he doesn't have the skill to do this job
>>
>>14723704
Yeah the gasket kit comes with valve stem seals which I'm replacing

Why are y'all so afraid of fixing your own cars? Didn't realize /o/ was all sissymen
>>

Don't listen to this dildo. Take your time, double check everything, it's not as hard as some /o/tist makes it out to be.

Buy yourself a straightedge and check the gap after cleaning the mating surface very well.

Calls me a cuck and asks more stupid questions.
Have fun with your lawn ornament.

I've done this exact job myself before. But I have the knowledge to do it.
You're not showing the knowledge thus far.

Exhaust valves get pretty narly over time. Last time I did mine I just replaced them all because they looked like they had been dipped in concrete mix. Would rather not chance a burnt exhaust valve.

Everyone has to start off somewhere. He's just here for some support from people he obviously trusts enough to ask questions.

If he fucks it up let it be a learning lesson but props to him for at least attempting to do it himself.

Brown exhaust valves are fine. First time I took apart an engine I was surprised by the color, a quick google suggests either incomplete burn or oil getting in.

>Durhurhur replacing a headgasket is haarrrddd. better leave it to the professionals

>Durhurhur
So you've never done a headgasket
>>
>>14723738
oh yeah, and one thing good to do while you're in there but not required is to just go ahead and either clean up all those old valves or replace em. Make sure you lap them in too. Number them with a sharpeie so theres no mix ups and go into the wrong holes
