I need a first project car that can be max 3k

I want something easy to wrench on, can be made fast relatively easily, looks slow, and is not a miata.

I plan on learning to rebuild or replace the engine.

What should I look for, c/o/ons?

Anything with a factory turbocharger.

Saab 9-3 Aero
Any turbocharged Volvo

Those are the current "cheap overlooked" cars that can have loads of potential. They also look very slow.

Easy to work on? I mean, not really? But every car has things that are a pain in the ass to do.

Making a turbo car go faster is much easier than adding power to a N/A car. In old times, N/A engines used to be so restricted that you could bolt a new exhaust system on and unleash lots of hidden power. These days, that's turbo engines. Adding a less restrictive exhaust to a turbo car mechanically increases boost pressure. Adding a bigger turbo makes bigger power (at the cost of responsiveness). Dyno tuning tends to yield excellent results for finding gains.

These kinds of modifications cost far less than if you were to attempt adding power to N/A car. Turbocharging a N/A car is also not cheap or easy, as extensive modifications must be made to allow a turbo to run safely/at all. Turbo engines come pre-made with all the plumbing, lower compression pistons, better driveline, more stout internals to handle the boost, etc.

Literally anything on craigslist sub $500

what the fuck is with these suggestions, get a 240sx easiest car ever to wrench on and you can pick them up for chump change, 1-3k
with that price range you will probably only be able to pick up a N/A car no idea what that nigger above me is talking about picking up a 3k max stock turbo car, good fucking luck.

miata, and mustang too, you cant be picky with your price range.

go to craigslist put in rwd, awd, manual and 3k max price you will find your best options.

if you really want to buy cheaper and want less steering control and only want to go fast in a straight line look for fwd too.

Get a 4 door full size car from the 60s or 70s. They can be had for under 3000 in running and driving condition. Ford LTDs, Chevy Biscayne, certain years of the Impala, Cadillacs, Plymouth Fury, the list goes on. All will have some sort of V8 (99% of the time) and fairly durable automatics (4 speeds are rare) that can make very good power and can be fast if you apply some old school thinking. Where this differs from the civic, miata, Saab, etc is that you don't have to have any real tuning equipment apart from a timing light, a screwdriver, and a service manual. I'm not saying it will be the cheapest route in the long run, but most older cars do no depreciate anymore as long as rust is non existent or kept in check/fixed. As well, you will have no emissions testing, safety equipment, sensors, etc to go wrong which makes diagnosing issues a bit easier*.

*Easier to myself and those I hang with anyway, though plugging in a scanner would be nice from time to time for things like misfires.

Good luck finding a 240 that isn't almost on fire for under 3000 dollars. You could literally take a shit and put a 240sx badge on it and some vaping ricer faggot will still ask at least 3k for it. It could be a fucking shell and a wheel and the owner will give the "i know what i gots, asking 1700, don't like it, don't take it" bullshit. I swear to god, people who sell 240sx's for more than they're actually worth need to fucking kill themselves. A 155 hp japanese shitbox spray painted matte black after all the original paint fell off on stock steelies and an engine infested with squirrels is not worth over 1000 fucking dollars in my opinion.

This, can swap in a Mazda B6T, or if your feeling adventurous a Mazda BP. They're stupid lightweight and surprisingly have a decent community of budget minded owners, but also those that modify them for performance.
