ITT we talk about out experiences with Aquaplaning.

Me tonight:

>doing 130 km/h on the highway, wondering why the remote controlled signs say 80km/h speed limit.
>spot a huge pool of flood water under a bridge about 5 seconds too late.
>car feels like it's on ice and I can feel the rear end pulling to the right.
>shit bricks and try to angle the wheels to the correct direction
>skid ends and rattles the car
>manage to keep in on the road

Moral of the story: Never doubt the road condition adjusted speed limits.
>>
funfact; Pete Rose wanted to buy the engine out of Pelle's car.

Wasn't it supposed to be haunted or something?

That was James Dean's Spyder.

Thank god you knew, I was looking for that. Thanks.

Why tho?
Was he a Flyers fan?

>In highschool
>in shitty m3 with super bald tires
>it starts pouring as im taking my friend home
>Slow down to a crawl and throw on hazards
>explain to friend that I can feel it about to go
>just as i get the words out sure enough
>skid side to side down the luckily empty road
>end up sliding to a stop sideways in the middle of the road
>continue on even slower

I was terrified of rain let alone snow from that point on, its not until recently that i've experienced rain with good tires on my corvette that I've gotten over it
>>
>>14718242
RUF tuned.

Nice bit of trivia.
I'll be sure to mention this at /hoc/ next time Pelle comes up in discussion.

That sounds more like skidding due to shitty tires.
Aquaplaning is when your car no longer touches the asphalt and surfs on the water completely uncontrollably.
There is no going side to side, it's just floating.
>>
>>14718293

Oh well no sketchy moments in that regard then

Other than going over a partially submerged bridge and being scared my carpet would get wet
>>
Aquaplaning is when your tires fail to remove the water from their tracks and lift your car on top of the water.
It's scary as fuck and there is pretty much nothing you can do other than keep the tires aligned to the road and pray that it stops.
>>
>>14718454
>>14718293
This.

It's even scarier when your speedometer drops to zero, and you're still moving.

I crashed my car on the Autobahn about 1 1/2 year ago on a day with heavy rain. Been driving for about 10 years and this was my first and (for now) last accident.

>ongoing road works in a long bend curve
>left one of 3 lanes is blocked
>speed limit at 60 or 80 km/h, don't remember
>road works end
>pull over to the left lane and accelerate
>at about 120 km/h I feel something's not right
>can't make out what's wrong (never experienced aquaplaning before)
>try to break a little
>car starts to spin
>hit center barrier to my left
>at that point I was probably already in shock
>lose control and "roll" across the other 2 lanes
>while crossing the other 2 lanes i hit another car
>both end up at the emergency lane on the right side of the autobahn

I was lucky that it was late evening/early night because if there were more trucks on the right lane it could've ended pretty bad. My car didn't look all that bad but my rear axle (rwd) was damaged so it was a constructive total loss for my insurance.
Tires weren't the best anymore and it happened shortly before I had to change to winter tires. Would've got new summer tires the spring after. I don't know how much my tires played a role in this but lucky for me neither the police nor the insurance guy that inspected my car said anything.

Pic related, it's the other guy's car.
>>
>Doing around 130km/h on 3 lane highway
>Notice large water pool
>Too late now
>Foot off throttle, keep steering straight
>Feel car lift off and slide
>Sliding straight across the pool
>Start to feel grip again
>Resume driving

I've learned the best thing to do when aquaplaning is to do as little as possible.
>>
>>14718180
this happened to me

didn't even brake hard and the wheels locked and no steering response

got a big ass dent on the front bumper now
>>
>>14719534
Aquaplaning on a pool is easy. When it happens on a normal wet road, you don't know when it's going to end and where it started.
>>
I've never experienced this before because all of the roads in Florida are designed to handle huge amounts of rain during hurricanes and daily summer thunderstorms and such. All of the roads slope down to the sides and there are storm drains everywhere. Or if it's not a super busy road then at least ditches on either side.

Occasionally if it's been raining really bad, then the ditches will fill up and overflow onto the street, but these are roads you probably aren't going much over 40 mph on. Any road where you're going fast will have storm drains.
>>
>>14719579
The only reason to aquaplane is by going too fast. If your tires are bald, then you have to go even slower.

Unless it's on a pool. Then you go from doing fine to being a boat on wheels and it's hard to anticipate, especially at night. That's when it's scary.

>driving at 1am, trying to get home from work
>nobody around anywhere, shitty rainy night
>hydroplaned a little when doing about life 130kph
>slowed to 90ish after that
>hit a long low spot in the road
>car slows down a bunch, then goes very light and floaty as it rides on top
>rear continues to hydroplane after front starts sinking, back end swings around
>end up backwards in a puddle, thought I'd flip the truck when the rear caught while sideways doing 70kph

Scary shit.
>>
Anyone ever think to.slow down in the rain?
>>
>>14720947
no. fuck you for using logical thought here
>>
>>14720663
I hydroplaned on a couple of pools. I would allllmost call it fun, but not being in control really isn't all that fun. It's a fucking terrifying rush, but not quite fun.

>Was headed south on I-95 towards Miami
>Daytime, little traffic, cruising along at 80-85
>Keeping pace with VW Rabbit that was also cruising through the sparse spots of traffic that there were.
>He's acting as my actual rabbit, just far enough ahead so he'll get tagged first in case of a cop on the side of the road
>It being Florida, it had just rained a bit through this area, nothing heavy, the road was already pretty much dry.
>Suddenly a little bit more water in the road, what the fuck ever, I've got good tires and know muh car.
>Turns out it was an ever too slightly deep pool of standing water.
>Speedo suddenly climbs, car starts floating a little bit and drifting right.
>No need to panic. Let off the gas a little bit, make slight corrections on the steering wheel, clear the pool, car returns to normal like nothing ever happened.

Happened a couple more times on that same drive. Just little tiny pools that were just a bit too deep to maintain contact. I know it's boring, but I'm at least proud of not freaking the fuck out and losing control at 80mph into a guardrail. Rest of the trip was uneventful. Girlfriend in the seat next to me didn't even know anything had happened until I asked her afterwards if she realized we'd hydroplaned.
>>
I thought it was more commonly refered to as hydroplaning
>>
There's few other fluids on the road on which do float, so...aqua is pretty accurate.

OP here.
My tires are good Nokia Hakkapeliitta tires.
Spring in Finland is like this. You feel like changing to summer tires and then all the sudden cold weather brings ice.
Winter tires aren't good on asphalt but Finnish winter tires are still better than chinese summer tires.
Anyway, it has nothing to do with tires other than them being wide, witch makes them easier to aquaplane.
I've experienced it before but just never with this much speed.
It was fucking scary to realize that you're doing 130 km/h and have no control.
>>
>>14721964
I don't think the brand matters much when you're aquaplaning. This is not about losing friction and skidding on wet asphalt. It's about not being on contact at all with the road.
And my MG is much faster and prettyer than your chinese shitbox anyways.

I have one.
>driving my then freshly built 350z in the rain on wastegate pressure, aprox 370whp
>driving with 120km, 10 below the speed limit on semi-slicks
>enter a patch of heavy-ass rain, like fucking buckets falling from the sky
>immediately lose any feedback from the front wheels as the car starts hydroplaning
>poopedmyselfalittle.png
>let off the gas and try to slow down
>rear right tire hits a bump and the whole rear slides to the left
>countersteer and punch the gas
>3 lane drifting bro
>front manages to get enough grip to fuck me over just as the car comes on boost
>back end snaps in opposite direction and the car spins out
>as i get to parallel i kick the clutch in and hit the breaks
>car comes to a stop literally 10cm from guardrail facing oncoming traffic
>poopalotthistime.webm
>luckily, next to no cars were on the road that day
>i start laughing like a maniac and continue to do so for the rest of the day
>it's always funny when you almost die
For the rest of the ownership, the 350 was never saw rain again.
