Hey /o/, I am going to be getting a mid-sized truck soon and have been really leaning towards the 2002-older toyotas. And I was just wondering just how under powered are the 4-cylinders? Are the v6's any good? Any other problems with them that i should be looking out for?

Pre 1996 4cyl is underpowered
Pre 1996 v6 has issues but apparently they can be resolved
1996+ 4cyl was better but still slow in a 4x4
1996+ v6 was breddy gud
Check for rust

Alright, well the 3.4 V6 is a good engine, its comparable to the Jeep 4.0. The 3.4 can be found in trucks 95.5 - well past 2002. The 4cyl doesnt have a huge amount of power but has more than you would think for a 4cyl. Which is fine for offroad. The 3.0 is not as good of an engine as the 3.4 but will do the job. I have a friend running toyo MTs (255/85/16) and his 3.0 can push them around up to highway speeds and offroad(4.30 factory gearing).

Why buying such an old truck? If you want something that old though I'd go with Toyota. Also don't forget about a used Ranger, these were solid little trucks.

400k miles on my dad's with the 22RE 4 cyl. You can't kill them, he claims it even has all the original hoses. No rust but he bought it new in '91 and it's never lived outside of California.

Have a 2003 Tacoma. Very happy to have a V6.

The I4 has to work harder and only gets a little better mileage, but the HP gain with the V6 makes it very worth it
