This is the best way
My car has no aircon so the windows stay down, unless I've parked and left the car or if it's raining hard enough.
The car is old and probably on it's way out so having the windows down lets me hear if it's making strange sounds more easily. Plus I'll have a better time hearing emergency vehicles approaching.
