Actually, I think it's the "rival" of the AE86 in the show, since they're nearly identical. Kai Kogashiwa races Takumi in an SW20, and its implied that Bunta's greatest rival was Kai's father, Ken. While it's never explicitly stated, but given the fact that Ken was so heavily invested and understanding of the MR2, and that he raced Bunta most likely before the SW20 was released: you can speculate he most likely raced him in an AW11.

Initial D caused a huge resurgence in attention to cars that a lot of people would've left to rot otherwise, especially in America. The AE86 went from being completely expendable shitbox to being worth as much as a new Corolla. The AE86 in America is generally only valued by weebs and ricers. Hell, every once in a while I see a beaten up GTS or SR5 for sale on craigslist for less than a grand because they think it's just an ancient Corolla.
OK, I own both cars, here it is:
AW11: suspension is worlds better since you can get coils on both the front and rear, and you can take any and all of the suspension components apart with a socket set and some jacks. Plus dual macpherson struts, handles like nothing else. In stock form with only suspension mods (depending on the spring and damping rates of course) it's a lot more comfy, heaps of interior space, more than enough boot space if you're a normal person. The engine bay is quite cramped though, and due to the drivetrain layout it is difficult to do a clutch job at home, yet still possible, I did one about a year ago in my shed, plenty of guides on the net. Snap oversteer is a meme, just don't drive it in the wet.
AE86: a little bit more punchy since it is lighter than the aw11, cornering ability feels almost the same despite showing a little less neutrality in some situations compared to the AW11. Much more practical car in terms of daily driving, everything is well spaced out, easy to get to, simple to fix, guides literally everywhere. People still make aftermarket stuff for both cars but this one has the majority of the market. People will gawk at you everywhere you drive, especially if it's loud. Both get relatively the same MPGs. Suspension is harder to tune since no Coilovers in the rear, and live rear axle, so you have to mess with pan hard rods and equal length links and shit, but once you're set up and have read a couple tuning guides it will handle like a beast. Stock seats are almost like bucket seats, adjustable side bolsters keep you planted. The shifter on this car is much nicer too, since it is directly linked with your trans compared to the cable system in the AW11.
long story short: AE86 for cult status, drift, practicality.
AW11 for razor precision, 80s as fuck looks, exotic drivetrain layout and novelty.

No. The MR2 has a stock weight distribution of 44:56. Having more weight in the back means you have better acceleration, braking and corner entry/exits. A 50:50 weight distribution isn't ideal for racing and it's pretty silly to compare the AE86 to the MR2 considering their different markets; the AE86 being a cheap reliable car with the MR2 being a specifically designed sports car.
