Apparently it only affects the Ford 2.3L with a manual. They designed the ECU to let the rpms drop slowly when releasing the throttle (clutch, gear does not matter) for emissions testing. Takes about 4 seconds for my truck to drop from 3k rpm to idle when I let off. When downshifting the engine only slows the truck down maybe 2mph until the ECU takes over

Do you break engine?
>>

autocunt kek
>>
>>14703597
How is that useful? You'd be going from drive straight to 1. That's not engine braking, that's breaking eng- oh someone already made that joke
>>
If I am going downhill for quite a ways, that is about it. Brake pads are easier to do then your clutch.
>>
>>14703650
Autos won't just downshift to first if you jam the shifter into 1. They're electronically controlled and know that it will over rev the engine
>>
>>14703664
How does letting off the gas while the clutch is fully engages wear your clutch? Slippage is what wears the clutch, moron.
>>
>>14703673
In order to engine brake you have to go trough gears down.

Oops I meant P R N D 3 2 1 lel

Not autocunt, I drive a 5 speed.

Pic related is the stupid autotragic
>>
>>14703673
It can wear on the fork and throwout bearing, technically. Not a big issue desu
>>
sort of, my autotragic at city speeds unlocks the torque converter so engine braking isnt that much but its still there. Not as much as direct drive.
>>
>>14703500
Yes. It saves brake wear. Which is useful, because my brake discs are heavily worn, and the pads are nearly worn out as well. I'm replacing both together in a month or two, but getting the last bits of wear out of them first.
>>
I drive 70 miles per day to work and back, 95% of all my braking is done via engine brake.
I only really brake on street driving.
Even in bumper to bumper traffic I engine brake. Only use my brakes when I'm not on level ground.
>>
>>14703500

When going downhill to keep the breaks from burning off.
Never in traffic because its gay and feels wrong.

If I engine brake, I usually get to around 40mph in whatever gear, then shift into 2nd, and let the magic happen till it's time to throw into newtroll.

What about you fucks?

yeah saves your brakes but you're fucking your piston rings instead. You're just reversing the force exerted on them

What's the reason to engine brake as in downshift while slowing down? That seems pretty abundant. I myself either put it in neutral and coast+brake until I stop or just let off the gas and press the brake. If you're scared of wearing out brake pads you're literally retarded.

>>
>>14706103
That's the idea. Unless towing a heavy load, or going up really steep/long hills.

I usually use the R one for going backwards tho. Never understood how they got R from back, but it's the one that goes that way.
>>
I engine brake so bad that I squeal the tires when I slam shift into first
>>
>>14704949

No.

Just, no.

That's not remotely close what happens, how did you end up with that conclusion? Seriously, not having a dig at you, but how did you arrive at the thought that the piston rings and lands cannot tolerate decel?

With the time it took you to type your post, you could have used a search engine.

That's AAA+ level mong man, damn.
>>
>>14703664
That's like saying accelerating wears out your throttle pedal
>>
>>14706314
It does....
>>
>>14706145
Yes, it's a great mystery how they decided to use R for the gear that reverses the direction of rotation on the output shaft.
>>
>>14706324
Did someone srs fall for that shit ass bait?
>>
Literally everyone engine brakes. It's a passive action that just happens when you take your foot off the accelerator.

It's negligible in autos though.
>>
>>14705998
this shit can make a top fuel dragster look like it's standing still bro. concord got some competition so it got grounded bro. nothing makes women beg to get into your truck when they have no idea what just passed them doing 1200 bro.

I'm trying to change the brake pads in my engine, but I can't figure out where they are for the life of me.

Anybody here know how to service the engine brakes on a 2006 Honda Civic? Should I change the rotors as well? 92k miles and I don't think they have ever been replaced.

>>14707017
Put some sand blasting sand in the intake. You want to scuff the friction surfaces.
>>
>>14707023
Ok cool thanks. The guy at VatoZone was able to find me the right pads but wasn't sure exactly how to do it. I would've thought the "Engine Brakes" would be near the engine.

>>14707027
Sounds good. I bet that will help to get that protective coating off the new engine brake rotors too if I replace those.
>>
>>14707017

You have to place the brake pad into your throttle body. If the car accepts your offering it will suck the brake pad into the intake and add it to it's collective torques.

Can you engine brake in an auto in M mode?
>>
>>14707271

>engine breaking

he means breaking in the engine, as in driving the car modestly for the first few hundred km's until everything gets seated just right
>>
>>14707017
Yeah there's just one brake, between the engine and the trans, it looks like a big round brake pad sandwiched between two rotors. You'll need to drop the tranny to access it

if it looks like a donut you're fucked m8
>>
>>14708605

Yes, as long as you're going DOWN a gear. You can engine brake in a car without an "M" mode. I have an automatic 4 speed RAV4, I can choose D-3-2-L, it will just keep the vehicle from shifting past the highest gear of that range. If I choose 3, it won't shift up to 4th gear. If I choose 2, it won't shift past 2nd gear. If I choose L (first), it will stay in 1st gear.

You should really only be using this if you're traversing really steep hills, especially if you're towing and don't want to overheat your brakes. 90% of the time you'll have no need for it, and it does put more strain on your transmission so just use your brakes when you can.
>>
>>14708605
Shift into P
>>
>>14708650

That doesn't do anything on modern cars you dingus, same with R. They're all electronically controlled trannies now, they will either block the shifter from moving to that position or they simply won't change gears if it's going to blow up the tranny.
>>
>>14704400

used to engine brake. Then learnt how to heel-toe and now i do all the time for practise/dat sound. Plus new brake pads are cheaper and way easier than doing a new clutch.

All the time especially when I'm approaching a corner at high speed, because engine brake doesn't slam my passengers forward like normal braking does.
Plus I have power after exiting the corner.

autos downshitf automatically when you release trottle, there is no need to manual downshift, actually forcing downshift can damage the box

No I do not engine brake.
>>

THIS ... you save brakes (an inexpensive job that any decent person should do at least once a year for safety, independant of pads wear) and got a marginal increase on gas mileage (LOL if you want to save fuel just don't use the car) all this while frying your engine causing unnecessary wear
