If you stuck a nose on a truck like a bullet train, would it be more aero dynamic?
>>
>>14703444
If by more aerodynamic you mean less drag, yes.
>>
Probably would violate some safety codes
>>
>>14703444
You'd save gas.
American trucks save so much more fuel than faggy Euro trucks because uros need cab-over designs because faggy Europe.

But it's not the front end that's the biggest problem.

It's basically like an artillery shell. They have a trail behind it which made the shell less effective.

A man found a way around this by putting a gas chamber that would fire gas out and fill that pocket.

The effect was a better shell instead of a better gun.

It doesn't matter how can i, as a consumer, know it's the truth without unbiased facts. Whether or not there is bias there is no credibility because marketing.

Having converted that into proper unit's that's only 44t, standard in the UK, quite a bit (21%) more than the US 36t limit for standard semis. Normal Americunt attitude, do less with more.

I always look at trucks and think how aerodynamically bad they are with all of the flat faces and parts that create more drag and how the owners that own the trucks could save money by spending a little bit on the truck besides chrome everything.
>>
isn't the flat face important for cooling?
>>
http://www.transportenvironment.org/sites/te/files/2015_06_Comparing_US_EU_truck_fuel_economy_explantory_note_Final.pdf

Also do European trucks usually have sleeper cabs?

>>14704103
All trucks, regardless of grill design will have massive radiators and good cooling.
>>
>>14704103

I'd do less with more as well if my national highway network was paved half as thick as it is. Autobahns feature three feet of gravel and sand bedding, meanwhile Americans occasionally slap asphalt straight onto the ground and call it a day.

Not building roads right in the first place, do some research and you will see that extra road wear was examined as a potential issue prior to setting the standard 44t limit. It was found to be a none issue.

Wow a whopping 1m miles, the average HGV will do 108,000 a year in the UK and the average age is according to the DVLA 7 years (that's average age so for every new HGV registered in a year there is one that is 14 years old still going) so that would be an expected average of a little over 1.5 million miles travelled by a euro truck. Oregon and Washington state allow 105,500lb combinations with 8 axle configurations, or roughly 47.85 tonnes. There's an absolute shitton of carriers doing this here.

Most of them haul containers, although a lot of them are flatbeds hauling lumber and building materials. My truck at work hauls 62,500lbs as a single unit vehicle (28ish tonnes), and 80k as a combo because our 35' trailers are cocksucking 12 ton pieces of trash. If we had a 4-axle trailer I could legally haul 102,000lbs (46 tonnes) if we changed the permits.

Not all of 'merica is created equal in terms of trucking.

Also, on the original topic, my truck gets 5-5.5mpg on a good day. Fucking suck it.

Yeah for supersonic speeds maybe. The Concorde is so unaerodynamic and makes so little lift on its own that it'd fall right out of the sky if its engines failed. Compare a regular airliner still being able to glide around for a few hundred kilometers if all the engines flamed out. Please understandu, air travel is an entirely different beast than ground travel.
>>
>>14707598
Wrong, total permissible weight on American interstates without an extra permit is 80,000 lbs or 36 tons.

Also Kenworth and Peterbilt interiors are utterly overrated crap full of cheap looking grey plastic and muh grey diamond leather. The only really neat interior besides Western Stars is found on high end Coronados.
>>

Walmart claims WAVE is 20% more aerodynamic than an average rig. It's has a novelty turbine powered hybrid drivetrain though, ICE would probably be unfeasible with that shape.

No reason am ICE couldn't work. Might have to make the chassis section a bit taller, though. 2' clearance above the frame rail is feasible.

$12,000 for an in-frame rebuild vs $120,000 for a new truck. Parts for a rebuild can run under $3000, so if you've got the tools and a spare 30-60 hours you can rebuild it yourself for less than you'd earn in a week.

This.

There are no regs to the length of the truck itself, but I'm pretty sure that every state has regs for combo lengths. Adding an extended nose would make the combo illegal even though the bare truck would still be legal itself. But whats the point of having a big rig if you can't haul shit?

Sure, but you do need somewhere for the radiator to go. I've seen more trucks with these tails on the back of the trailer that make it more tier drop shaped.

It's awful tbqh, you have to use a different semi-public shower and semi-public shitter every day and it's rare to find a sleeping spot that's continuously quiet. Unless you can shit anywhere and sleep like a rock this ain't the thing for you.

would fitting a wing to create lift be good idea to reduce damage to roads and tyre friction

Fuel clearly ain't expensive enough.

There is effectively no combination length restriction. It's technically 68' off of STAA highways, but even with a 48' trailer my rig is 68'8". There is no restriction on tractor length, however trailers are limited to 53'.
>>
>>14703444
You mean like this abomination? Got 13mpg but the nose swing makes it useless day to day. It was only used for one load then was sold.

>>14703896
It probably has more to do with how you never drive over 55mph.

>>14704103
Not really. Portrait radiators/CAC are just the norm because they're the cheapest configuration and trucks have been designed around that shape for over 100 years. They're not much taller than the engine, though, so the benefits of a redesign would be marginal.

The trailer will hit obscales before the cab does. It's probably even safer than a conventional trucks.

>>14721076
I've had a look at length limits recently because of a hypothetical motorhome tow combination and on state level they make absolutely no sense. Tons of states where combinations are limited to 65' or 60' when any semi will easily reach 70', if not more. If the limits are meant to make sense, why aren't they enforced, and if they don't make sense and aren't enforced, why do they exist?
>>
>>14721114
I bet you could get another 0.4 mpg by replacing the mirrors with cameras.
>>
>>14717071
Why would you want to drive a truck this long?
>>
>>14722886
There are limits because otherwise, how would you design roads and intersections? It would be an unbounded problem.
>>
>>14722870
The new Argosy really does look fantastic, and as I understand it you can still buy it as a glider kit in the US and get your own drivetrain installed, but I'm yet to see a single one.
>>
>>14722896
Yeah but what's the point of state limits if there are no interstate limits, and why does almost every semi truck seem to violate these state limits and no one cares?

Tonnage isn't even a metric measurement. 100kg is 1Mg and not a ton you crumpet eating tea drinking syrian cucked snaggle toothed bitch.
>>
>>14724147
A ton is a different word for 1000kg. So, it's just shortened for ease of use, not something different.
>>
>>14724172
Ton? Tonne? Different terms.

Ton =2000lbs
Tonne (metric) = 1000kg (2250lbs or something)
>>
>>14724198
Short ton seems to be the only common Imperial unit to have a somewhat sensible measurement: 2,000lb even. As opposed to, say, the LONG ton, of 2,240lb.

Metric Tonne is 2,204.6lb, not 2,250.

They were and so they had to fly at subsonic speeds very often. Shame it was put out of service, I read there are new supersonic planes in the works but they'll have 1/10 the passenger capacity of the concorde, only for ultra vip of course.
>>
>>14722889
0.04mpg, maybe. Most of the economy gains in that truck were due to the driver hypermiling abs dicking about around 50mph cross country.

>>14722895
You can run 60' beams without a permit with a frame like that.

>>14722897
I've seen about a dozen. They can't fit modern motors into them, so they're only for owners that wanted a 10+ year old engine to begin with.

>>14722902
STAA highways vs state highways.

>>14722987
Lower valence, box nose, lowering the front end, driving slower, matching the injectors, etc.

>>14722999
55-57mph is doable.

>>14723031
The trailers are legal and that's all that matters.

>>14723523
STAA regulations override local regulations, which don't apply most of the time between an STAA route and a shipper/receiver. For local routes to have precedence above STAA routes they have to do enough paperwork that it's easier to just build to STAA regulations.

>>14723877

>>14723893
The roads are fine. Deal with it.

>>14724052

Dumbass, the fact that's it's tuned for high speed aerodynamics is the reason it's go poor glide ability. You need long, straight wings for glide ability. If you want aerodynamics and speed, you need highly swept back wings, which don't generate as much lift and have much higher minimum speeds.

A 747 will fucking shatter if you hit the sound barrier with it because it's not aerodynamic enough, even though it can glide much better than the Concorde.

The Space Shuttle glides like a brick taped to a paper airplane, but it's the fastest aircraft in existence. There's no coincidence it's got the same wing as the Concorde.

The pic related EcoRunner V is the most aerodynamic 'car' in existence, and it and the truck are pretty similar in design.
