I'm getting my first car soon, it doesn't come with abs. Is ABS really important? Would the average commute to work require ABS?
ABS is really only helpful in bad weather or super hard stops. So if you live in someplace with a temperate climate (i.e. Commiefornia), don't drive like an idiot and you'll be fine.
I've been DDing a car with no ABS for 8 months, including a snowy winter. It's been fine for me, but it does have 4wd and I'm not sure what kind of car you're looking at

ABS only kicks in when you stomp on the brakes in an emergency situation to prevent the wheels from locking up. It will do this by pulsing the brakes on and off repeatedly incredibly fast, and you'll feel shuddering through the pedal.
It's not necessary for normal driving, hence why ABS is considered a SAFETY feature.
Not really, but maybe watch your distance in heavy traffic since its your first car. Soccer moms and teenagers love slamming on their brakes since they never pay attention.

Civic's period are known for bad automatics. the manuals don't have that problem. Honda makes some of the nicest manuals in the business and they're awesome cars to learn on if you don't already know how to drive a stick.

Depends on how well you can predict the future by observing what's currently happening around you.

Do you know how long it took me to learn? Half an hour.
And it was in something nowhere near as nice to drive in as a Civic. I learned to drive stick in a 94 Ford Ranger with more problems than parts.
On top of that, there really aren't any FWD automatics that are known for reliability unless it's a Cadillac with a Northstar V8, but then the cost of maintenance will scare you away.

ABS wasn't required by law on all cars until 2012. My 2004 Saturn doesn't have it, but it was an option. I know it was optional on EX model Civics from 2001-2005 as well.

I had an 02 Civic LX without ABS as my first car and during the several years that I had it, I've had to slam hard on the brakes maybe twice, once during extremely heavy rain and once on a highway with stoplights because I was a retard. Both times I skidded, but I didn't try to pump them or anything.
Other than those two times, I didn't manage to lock the brakes even while hooning and working a pizza delivery job. You'll be fine.

You'll be fine without ABS. Practice stopping quickly a few times by pumping the brakes, learn how it feels before the wheels skid.
I just spent a week commuting without ABS (bypassed ESP/ABS due to a broken brake switch) with no difference in braking because I didn't ever panic brake.

You don't need it. You won't even need it 9/10 times.
Just be careful when it's raining, snowing, whatever. Keep in mind that if your wheels are locked up you can't steer. As long as you have a little extra following distance you shouldn't have any problems
