High-powered VW aircooled motors always look so damn cluttered to me, especially with a turbo. To add to that, they make comparatively little power, and most of those turbo idiots run drawthrough carbs, which kills your compressors wheel.

No. Like I see, great to see a cheaper alternative, because I'd love to build a prewar Ford one day with an Offy - although that's financially impossible. A Quad 4 seems like a great substitute. Now, I wonder if Ford has a similar DOHC 4-banger, to keep it a Ford-in-a-Ford.

Ford didn't make any engines that looked like the offenhausers to my knowledge.

But GM Quad 4's are plentiful, cheap, and make great power.

The Quad 4 was introduced in 1988 and was last used in 2002 in the Chevrolet Cavalier before being replace with the Ecotec engines.

Deal with it. It's the cheapest alternative to an Offy. Think of it this way.
Oldsmobile was GM's technology division, and the Quad 4 was clearly inspired by the Offenhauser engines. Why else would they make it look so much like an Offenhauser?
Regardless of GM, it's a great engine, and Oldsmobile had MANY engine project canceled by Daddy GM because of the Corvette. That this one snuck through? Awesome.

Really useless experiment though, considering GM already tried 4-valve pushrod heads on the LS7, and chose not to use them because they didn't iffer significant gains.

>>14700887
Drawthrough turbo setups are stupid. Throwing droplets of gasoline at a compressor wheel spinning several thousand RPM means you end up with severe damage to the wheel's blad tips.

>>14701874
It doesn't flow 350+ cfm, it doesn't make power comparable to the top end of the market, who cares about how much valve lift you run if your valvetrain/piston dish can handle it, and thanks to LS engine's long stroke, they'll have good low RPM torque. Next!

The Offenhauser has no headgaskets.
The Quad 4 does. The Quad 4 is the closest thing to a Offy you will get in a conventional engine. And just like the Offy, the Quad 4 has set speed records. In 1988, to promote the Quad 4 engine among hot rodders, Oldsmobile built the Aerotech concept (pictured). The Aerotech featured a 2.0L turbocharged variant making around 7-800 HP. The Aerotech became famous for setting a land speed record for closed course top speed with a record of 255 MPH.

For all the insanity of putting it on a sheet of wood with wheels attached, by itself, it's just a generic aircraft engine, is it not? Sure, pretty high displacement, but not really that much to write home about in terms of engine alone. Might be wrong here, of course.

It's a diesel twostroke. No valves, little vibrations and turbo'd out the ass. It may be a complex build to look at but technologically it is fairly simple. No gasket seals under high pressure either since the piston rings carry all the force. I would be very interested in working on one.
