Is Rev matching required on a cruiser? I ride an 86 Honda Shadow 700 and I see sport bikes do it all the time. Also, any thoughts on quickshifting on a driveshaft-driven bike?
>>
>>14695796
Rev matching is used on everything manual. Don't -have- to use it, but theres no reason not to.
>>
>>14695796
I do it on mine. No reason not to and it allows for much smoother downshifts.
>>
>>14695808
I thought as much. It doesn't really seem to help that much except a quick downshift into the previous gear. Anything lower than that then it's not very happy in the higher rpms

Just something you get used to bro, you a new rider?

I tried it once one afternoon and was super off, but it clicked and I got the idea of how it works, it becomes such a casual thing to smoothly and gradually slow yourself down. Allows for better take-off if you need to get out of the way as well. Hence the saying "drop a gear, disappear" Just practice it, you'll learn the gears and how much you need to blip.

When I leared how to do it, I thought this was smooth, nah not really. Just takes getting used to.

>>>/wsg/1001756
>>
>>14695641
yes, saved my fairing

>>
>>14695851
I've been riding for two years on my 700, but knew nothing about Rev matching ID clutch less shifting until recently. Been practicing ever since, but I'm so adept at handling my own clutch it makes hardly a difference, the only exception Rev matching when slowing down. But other than that, I don't really need to downshift all that much, I've got so much torque I just power through the lower rpms (2500-400). Anything higher or lower than that requires up or down shift respectively
>>
>>14695886
Ahh gotcha, I'll tackle clutch-less shifting eventually, it really doesn't interest me because I love the feel of operating the clutch, it's part of the whole package for me. I just like rev matching due to its simplicity for slowing down, it's a very casual thing to just cruise to an eventual stop.
>>
>>14695725
Do you understand just how much faster 1000's are?

I don't care how good you are, unless your 'track' is retarded, a 250 will never approach an average time for a 1000.
>>
>>14695895
Same here. For me, using the clutch is much smoother than shifting without it. If you have a clunky gearbox and driveshaft like me that is. As for Rev matching, can't argue with that
>>
>>14695914
Not him but it depends on the bike and the track. There are some track times around (forget where) where the Moto3 250s were posting better times than the H2R.

Then this is the bike for you. Start on the streets, get a handle for the clutch, they're about as powerful as a scooter as well and absolutely fantastic on gas
>>
almost complete, needs a top end rebuild and retune, then its good to go!
>>
>>14695946
No. I'm not. The brief moment of throttle when you flick the throttle back on gives a burst of speed on bigger bikes. The same thing happens on smaller bikes but a brief moment of throttle doesn't put you 20 over.
>>
>>14695931
lol is there even a straight on that track?
>>
>>14695941
Am I doing it wrong?

Don't you just apply slight pressure to the shift lever, and then briefly throttle OFF?

Slips into gear, no muss, no fuss. Is my gearbox about to blow my balls off?
>>
>>14695972
You want to be rolling the throttle back on after you cut it. So when you roll off roll it back on as quickly as you went off the throttle if that makes sense.

What happens when you do it without hard accelerating is you end up with this split second of extra throttle that on bigger bikes can translate into a quick burst.
>>
Why do bikes usually have 1 carb per cylinder? I'm guessing it's due to not being able to fit a proper intake it but is that it?
>>
>>14695972
No, you're doing fine. But for the more racing-inclined, almost all bikes have the ability to shift without using the clutch, which reduces the time needed to shift. You know how when you hear a sport bike going through the gears, it's almost instantaneous? Like, bam, in 3rd gear, then in 4th, no time in between. Either using shorty clutch levers, or clutchless, AKA quickshifting.
>>
>>14695984
it just works
>>
>>14695989
Even with a normal clutch you can shift fast.

It does, but even higher end cars only had twin throat/barrel carbs.

Reminds me, mate was talking about a 24L Rolls Royce engine that once rolled through his shop. Thing had 24 carbs, one for each cylinder, tuning and balancing was done once from factory and then they would just pray it never went out of whack. Luckily all he wanted was some basic stuff, guy was a collector

Regardless, quickshifting takes the clutch out of the equation, which can cut down on time between gears. Obviously for everyday riding, that wouldn't matter. Personally, I think it's fun and sounds pretty cool banging through the gears in split seconds

Just saying that a lot 1000cc riders at the track are average at cornering, and good rider on a decent 250cc can match them (except on the straight). Our local track has only 4 seconds between the 250 and outright lap records. And a 600 is under a second off the outright record. And no it is not a goat track in eastern europe...

>>
>>14696096
Ooh, my bad I read it as clutch lever. It's not going to blow up any time soon, and technically you can keep on doing what you're doing. There's practically no harm in shifting without clutch, if you're doing it right. It's hard to even get it wrong, if you're jerking on every shift then you're going to cause some harm. Otherwise, if you're letting of the throttle, shifting with or without clutch, and resuming acceleration you're in the clear.Just don't do it in a car.

Thinking about learning to ride a sport bike
Reading the book
How the fuck do you counter-steer?
My book is like 3 lines on it and that's all. This seems like the most fucking important thing you could possibly cover, and there's barely anything on it in the book.
It's so counter intuitive, and it seems absolutely vital.
If I had skipped a half a page in a 80 page training guide, I would have never even known about it.
How the fuck?
>>
>>14696368
Push handlebars opposite of where you want to turn.
Bike will tip over.
Gyroscopic properties of bike will want to keep it upright so it will turn into the direction it tipped over.

Just try it in a parking lot, you'll get it. Just keep in mind its a light push and it happens quickly. Dont ram the bar full lock or something.
>>
>>14696368
Because it's actually really easy and you do it intuitively when you ride.

Especially on a sportsbike.

Just point your chin where you want to go and your body does the rest.

Don't think too hard about it.
>>

How much do you think there is to say about counter steering?

Not much choice on the way to my parents. There's no alternate route that isn't also dead straight roads with average speed cameras.

Even on twisty roads big bikes are fun though. Can't come in as aggressively as on a real small bike but you can have fun with the completely visceral acceleration.

My generation of R1 is a fairly light bike comparatively.

watch that oil seal if its at around 160 hours they generally blow around the 200-300 hour mark, easiest way to tell it has happened is the oil will be over the level glass one day after riding it, wont exactly hurt anything but its not exactly good for anything either.

Car transmissions don't tend to be full mesh so it's not a great idea unless you know exactly what you're doing. In comparison doing it on a bike is pretty much harmless unless your technique is abysmal.

>double clutching
Is for downshifting and pointless in cars with synchros. If you don't know if your transmission is synchromeshed it is.
